I was so excited to head out to go moto camping on my Honda Africa Twin so that I could meet up with Beards, Bikes, and Camping and to motorcycle camp overnight before we took part in the "Pack it Out" forest clean up event organized by As the Magpie Flies. It turned out that the most exciting part of the trip happened before I even got to the campground. I got an Africa Twin flat tire in the front and had to remove the tire and swap out the tube on the side of the road. After I had completed my whole Africa Twin tire changing operation, I was tightening my bags back down on my bike and ended up performing one of my signature motorcycle fails: I accidentally pulled my bike over, dropping it all the way to the ground. I had never picked up my bike before, so I had to figure out how to pick up a Honda Africa Twin by myself for the first time on the side of the road. Afterward, I ended up dropping my bike again (off camera, sadly) while looking for Travis at our original meet up spot. Fortunately, I was able to locate him at Jones Creek Campground and fill him in on my whole Africa Twin flat tire and motorcycle drop adventure.
Hello friends, welcome back to the Dorkside. Thanks for coming along. Today we are going camping
in the Tillamook State Forest with Beards Bikes and Camping and tomorrow we're going to meet up
with As The Magpie Flies and a bunch of really cool people to help clean up the Tillamook State
Forest. Let's go camping. Let's go pick up some garbage. It's going to be great.
Tillamook State Forest is about two, two and a half hours from me. I'm going to meet Beards
Bikes and Camping up there actually at Browns Camp in the OHV area. Thanks for coming along.
Let's go. Minimal, we're talking less than 10 percent chance of rain. Well it's raining and
I'm in my Kalei Merakesh gear which is not waterproof. It's supposed to be mildly hydrophobic
so let's see how hydrophobic is it. Just a drizzle at this point but damn it doesn't look like it's
going to get better and I don't have any waterproof gear. So way to not be prepared for Oregon
idiot. This is why you should never trust the weather forecast in Oregon especially in the
summer but I'm actually really happy because it's been really dry and the fire danger is crazy and
really needed some moisture in the air so this is good stuff. But anyway I might get a little wet
today. I'm already getting a little wet. Good time. I'm coming for you Beards. There's a guy up there
on the KLR wearing a Merakesh jacket and a Krios helmet so he knows how to dress. I decided to just
take a little detour. Honestly just looking for a place to stop and pee. This is Hag Lake. Never been
here before. There's the lake. Pretty. Thought you should see it. Pretty low. Right outside of Newburgh.
Never been here. Weird how sticky it is. 20 minutes later. And uh definitely got a little wobbly coming
down this hill and she is flat bro. Flat. I don't know what's up with that. It's a problem. Try pumping
it back up and see how long it lasts. Maybe I can get there. Not very far out. Gales Creek gas station is
five miles. I'm gonna try to make it. We'll go slow. Head shake. Oh yeah okay. We didn't make it all the way.
This is not good news. I've been lucky. I'm finding places to stop every time. God we're so close.
So close. Well that was like three minutes and it went all the way flat so this maybe this plan is
not the safest. I may need to change the tire here. It seems to be getting worse more quickly so
probably continuing to ride is stupid. So let's not do that. Oh yeah. Coming out bro. Coming out.
Okay she seems to be proper. Okay that's odd.
Here's the MVP of this kit. If you ever have to do this.
Let's twist it a bit.
Get in there. She's in there. You better hold area bastard.
All right it's going. It's going. Hey she popped. Excellent. It's holding air. Let's put this tire back on. Sweet.
Bruh. Bruh. Why haven't the pinch bolts still I get? I just got to pump the forks a little.
Tighten the pinch bolts. We're good. I think. I'm so glad I've done this before at home. I can't
imagine this being the first time I'd ever tried it. So put your own tires on at least once or twice.
Now how do I find Travis? I'm an hour and a half late from when we were supposed to meet.
I can't imagine he waited an hour and a half. But I'll probably go to Brown's camp because
we were supposed to meet. See if he's there. If he's not. He talked about trying to get a campsite
at Jones camp. I'll go there and look. And if he's not there. I don't know what the hell I'm going to do.
Camp by myself. My little proper uppers. Gotta go. I'm gonna drop this back down.
Handy piece of wood I found. A couple of them.
Not one person stopped while I was here. Not one.
Not even the person that owns this house.
Oh no.
Hilarious. This is my life guys. I've never actually had to pick this up by myself before.
Kickstand. Might be hard with the panniers. We got it.
We got it. What a day. I'm gonna assume I won't knock this over again.
Put this camera away and get back on the road. Tires fixed.
Adventure mischief managed. On the road again. He was not at Brown's camp where we were gonna meet.
But I can't say I blame him because I'm so late. So Jones Creek is where we're gonna come next and
look. So I'm just looking here for Beards to see if he's camping here. There he is. I'm gonna do it
this way. I'm gonna go illegal. Don't tell anyone. Thank god. What happened? Got a flat. Had to change it.
Yeah. Well I did. Yep. And it was empty. But I knew you said this was your first choice. So
basically as soon as I saw there were empty sites I knew you were here. So that worked out. But I know
there's a rule. You're not supposed to. You're supposed to set up your camp first. But I've
earned this. I'm gonna drink it. I haven't told you the most fun part. Change the tire took about
an hour. Hour and a half. And then I'm putting everything back on the bike. Tightening down
this strap. And I got it back on the side stand everything blah blah. And I pull on the strap and
let it go and the bike fell over. So I had to pick it up on the side of the road. And I've never done
it by myself before. First time. So after going through this whole ordeal it was easy. It's so
much easier than I thought if you just do this thing. But then I went to Browns and was taking
a ride into the day use area there. And there's some brand new loose ass gravel. And I'm looking
up for you. And my front end goes whack. Ran off the bike again. Had to pick it up again. So
hopefully my chair and table are not destroyed. Cheers bro. Cheers. You definitely earned that.
Oh it's still not fixed. No bro.
That's what Cameron said. Yes. I had two giant beers. What is your excuse?
