Aalto Museum is one of eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Norway.
Between the field and the museum there are over three and a half thousand rock carvings which
in the winter they allow to be covered by the snow because it preserves them
but luckily there are some inside that we can have a look at.
It's warm in here so the good news is there's a cloakroom where you can dump your coats.
As you can see it's an interactive museum and we're off to a pretty impressive start.
The rock carving is about 4,000 to 5,000 years old and every figure is unique
and I'm wondering why these footprints are taking me towards this box.
Wow, you pick up the torch, you shine it at the walls and then you discover what's there.
These rocks visible in the summer months are what the museum is really famous for.
Throughout the 5,000 years boats have been a central figure in the carving
and this is because the ocean was so important both for transport and for fishing.
There's never any shortage of wood here so all the houses were wood built.
Friday was the most important day at market.
The merchants, the fishermen, the women from along the field and the cafe owners were waiting
for the arrival of the reindeer sledge convoy.
This is called the magic drum and in here are images depicting the myths
and the legends of the Sami people.
Saint Olaf, the patron saint and eternal king of Norway who christianized the country.
This is much later, slate mining began in 1850 and even today is one of the major local industries
in Alta. Ethnic groups used antler horn spoons as far back as 1600 AD.
This definitely is a language.
This section is all about the northern lights and the scientific research that's gone into them.
The northern lights are depicted here and this is what everyone wants to see when they come to Alta.
If you're coming to Alta don't miss this museum. It's fascinating and it's obvious why it won the
award for the best museum in northern Europe. The museum also touches on nordic skiing.
If you're interested in creepy crawlies in the auditorium part of the exhibition
is insects from all over the world.
Alta is full of surprises not just the lights.
