welcome back to the road. Today we're heading to the western part of Belgium to explore the city
of Kortrijk.
Kortrijk is one of those places that quietly surprises you. It's got a deep medieval
past, some stunning architecture, and a kind of charm that's really easy to fall in love with.
The city's roots go back over a thousand years, and you can still feel the history
as you walk the streets, cobblestones underfoot, centuries olde facades lining
the way. It's a kind of place that makes you want to slow down and just take it all in.
Kortrijk was once a thriving textile center, and even today that legacy is woven into the fabric
of the town. As you walk you will notice a mix of old and new, quaint alleys and restored guild houses
rubbing shoulders with sleek modern structures. There's a great energy
here, but it's not overwhelming. It's the kind of place that doesn't scream for
attention, but earns your respect the longer you spend time with it.
Our first stop is the Broel Bridge, one of the most iconic spots in Kortrijk, and it's for a good
reason, this is the postcard moment. The bridge itself dates back to the 12th century, though what
we see today was rebuilt in the 17th century. It's flanked by two medieval towers, the Broel Towers, which
once guarded the city's walls. It's peaceful here, especially in the early morning or around sunset. You
can almost picture the boats passing underneath centuries ago.
Just a short walk from the bridge is
one of the coolest museums in town texture Museum.
This place dives deep into the story
of flax and linen, which may not sound super thrilling at first, but give it a chance. Trust me.
Kortrijk was once one of the most important linen producing centers in Europe. This museum does
a great job showing how that shaped the region, not just economically, but culturally too.
It's housed in an old linen warehouse, which makes it feel all the more authentic.
The exhibitions are surprisingly immersive, with old weaving
machines, personal stories, and some truly beautiful fabric work on display.
There's also a room they call the wonder room, filled with artistic takes on linen
that will definitely catch you offguard in a good way. And the best part? The museum has
this quiet reverence for the hands that made everything possible; the weavers, the
spinners, the generations of families who kept the trade alive. It's not flashy but it's heartfelt.
Our last stop today is the Church Of Our Lady, and it's a special one. Built back in the 13th century
this church has seen a lot! From medieval battles to quiet Sunday masses, it's been here through it
all. Inside there's this soft light filtering through the stained glass, and the whole space
just feels grounded, peaceful, a little awe inspiring; but there's more here than meets
the eye. Like the Count's Chapel, which is one of the earliest examples of Gothic architecture in
the region. It's filled with frescos and statues that date back hundreds of years.
There's even a small statue of the Madonna that is said to be miraculous. It's one of those
buildings that reminds you how long people have been gathering, hoping, and finding meaning in the
same places; and that is very beautiful.
This is a beautiful little city. Every street
seems to tell a story, and there is a real sense of quiet resilience here. Kortrijk may not be the
first place that comes to mind when you think of Belgian destinations, but it absolutely deserves
a spot on your list. Whether it's the history, the architecture, or just the way the light hits the
old stone buildings along the river, something about this place stays with you. I hope you enjoyed
this visit to Kortrijk Belgium. Let us know your favorite part in the comments below, and if you
