Welcome back to the road. Today we are
stopping off in Lewisburg, West
Virginia.
Lewisburg is named for Andrew Lewis who
established a camp at Lewis Spring
located behind the courthouse. In 1770,
a fort was built here called Fort
Savannah. The first took part in a
conflict with the Shia people led by the
famous war chief known as Korntock. The
war with the Shiai ended in 1774 when
Chief Korntock was beaten in battle in
what is today Point Pleasant, West
Virginia. Before the Civil War, this was
part of Virginia. The town became a
venomous place for resorts and spars.
Thanks to nearby minor springs. When the
war broke out between the states, this
part of Virginia broke away from the
rest of the state and Louisburg traded
hands several times between north and
south. Many of the buildings in downtown
were used for hospitals. Today,
Lewisburg is known for trendy shops and
beautiful hiking trails.
This is a place full of history and the
perfect place to get a close look at
some of it is the North House Museum
operated by the Green Brier Historical
Society.
This amazing house was built in 1820 for
a local lawyer named Join North.
Since then, it has spent time as a
tavern, the residence for woman's
college president and finally became
home to the Green Bryer Historical
Society in 1976.

The house is full of exhibits, giving us
the chance to see history up close and
firsthand.

I mentioned it before that Lewisburg is
famous for its beautiful hiking trails.
One of those is the Green Brier Revel
Trail. The trail is 77 miles long. So if
you have plans to walk the entire lands,
you will need to set aside a few days.
If it seems a bit too much, trust me, it
can be done. Even I walked 800 miles on
the Camino, so 77 should be okay if you
are physically up to it.
For this next part, we're heading over
the border into Virginia to visit the
Humpach Bridge in Coventon. This is
about 30 miles away from Louisburg, but
the design looked so interesting I
couldn't pass it up. Covered bridges
were built here because it protects the
decks of the bridge making it last
longer. This one was built in 1857 and
got its name from the ship. It was a
part of Route 60 until 1929, but
obviously wouldn't worked for modern
road traffic. I hope you enjoyed this
visit to Lewisburg, West Virginia. This
is a beautiful town full of artists and
trendy shops. It's a place you can enjoy
the beauty of nature while walking its
many trails. It's a place where every
building hides an incredible story that
helped to shape the history of this
place. Thank you for watching. See you
next time.
