Guten Tag! We've learnt how to introduce ourselves and give our age.
But what happens when we need to fill out a form with personal information?
In this lesson, we're going to be looking at how to say you're male or female
and how to say whether you're married or single.
Let's first listen to a short dialogue and we will hear the key phrases that we will learn today.
Sind Sie männlich oder weiblich?
Ich bin männlich.
Was ist Ihr Familienstand?
Ich bin ledig.
Let's first learn how to say whether we are male or female.
Sind Sie männlich oder weiblich?
First to ask whether someone is male or female, we ask,
Sind Sie männlich oder weiblich?
Sind Sie means are you,
and männlich means male,
and weiblich means female.
Oder means or, so männlich oder weiblich means male or female.
Now, Sie is the formal form of you,
so if we want to be less formal, we can use Du and ask this question,
Bist du männlich oder weiblich?
Do remember that when we use Du, we also use Bist instead of Sind.
Let's first practice asking these questions.
Sind Sie männlich oder weiblich?
Bist du männlich oder weiblich?
That was great. Well done.
Let's now take a look at how we can answer this question.
Ich bin weiblich.
Ich bin männlich.
Now, we should already be familiar with this sentence.
Ich bin means I am,
so we say Ich bin,
and then say either weiblich or männlich,
depending on whether you are a female or male.
Let's go straight into a speaking practice.
Listen and repeat.
Ich bin weiblich.
Ich bin männlich.
That was great. Well done.
Let's now learn how to talk about our marital status.
Was ist Ihr Familienstand?
As we have learned before,
was ist means what is,
and ihr means your,
and family and stand means family status.
So all together, was ist Ihr Familienstand?
means what's your family status.
And this is how we ask about someone's marital status.
Ihr is the formal form of your,
so if we want to be less formal,
we can ask this question.
Was ist Dein Familienstand?
Dein is the informal form of your.
Let's practice asking these questions.
Was ist Ihr Familienstand?
Great job. Well done.
Finally, let's learn how to answer the question about family status.
Ich bin verheiratet.
Ich bin ledig.
Verheiratet means married,
and ledig means single.
So these sentences mean I am married or I am single.
Remember to pronounce the V as F sound in German.
Let's practice saying these phrases.
Ich bin verheiratet.
Ich bin ledig.
Fantastic job. Well done.
Let's listen to the dialogue one more time.
Sind Sie männlich oder weiblich?
Ich bin männlich.
Was ist Ihr Familienstand?
Ich bin ledig.
Richtig oder falsch?
Ledig means single.
Weiblich means male.
Familienstand means family name.
Excellent job today. Well done.
Today we've looked at how to give some personal information you might need
when filling out forms in German.
As always, the next lesson is a speaking drill lesson,
and I will soon see you again in the lesson after that.
Tschüss!
