Thank you, WR Charleston Rambo, aka "Ball Out Charlie", & "Big Rambo" of the XFL Orlando Guardians for answering our questions on the Alan & Aaron Sports Talk Radio Show today!
Charleston breaks down having the Longest Touchdown in Franchise History of 81 Yards! We greatly appreciate Charleston Rambo, @theUFL & the Orlando Guardians!
So hey, thanks for joining this afternoon.
I want to before I get going, like I know your first name is
Charleston, but do you prefer to be called by Charleston or like
how do you want people to refer to you, bud?
Yeah, you know, Charleston's my name.
It don't matter.
Charleston, Rambo, ball out Charlie, Big Rambo.
Anytime, you know, Rambezo.
It's there.
I'm a polite guy.
So I'll take anything.
Fair enough.
With that in mind, like Andy, anyway, we'll make sure I ask
because we can all have a learning experience.
It's like where did the name Charleston come from?
I mean, I asked my mom that so nothing new unique, but my dad
name is Charles.
So she added on Charleston.
I think somebody she know or heard where their middle name
was Charleston or something.
She liked it.
So she named me that and I gave me a unique middle name as
well.
So yeah.
Fair enough.
So we got the introductories out the way.
I mean good to see you on the call that you're one of the
few players.
I got to meet in person before a call.
So there you go.
But with all that in mind Charleston, it's it's appropriate.
You're named after a dance this past week.
You have the longest catch in franchise history.
That's a little bit of dancing there.
I know you would have preferred to have it in a wind but kind
of tell me what you saw in that play and what it feels like
to have that.
Hey right now.
I have the longest play in franchise history at the moment.
Yeah, I mean, you know, it feels great getting the hands
on finally, you know, my first and many but just on that
play, you know, I had we had a post call and you know, obviously
the defense won't be on in coverage of either cover one or
cover four and I know Cody had his route to grab the safety
side, you know, other than that and you just use my speed
run a great route against the one-on-one DB and you know,
from there, you know, great ball from six and appreciate him
throwing it out there for me and you know, it is great play
call, you know, so we executed great.
Yeah, that was that was a great play.
Congratulations on that Charleston always a pleasure.
And one of the things that really impressed me besides that
big play was the fact that you bounce back mentally from the
miscue and came back and played really really strong.
Maybe you can tell people what do you do mentally to help out
the team?
Oh, you lost me.
I used to go into anything off you like that, but you know,
just leaving in the past and he's going right to next play
and it's big in the moment, you know, you can't fix the past
but you always fix it present, you know, so I mean going up
keep my head up.
You know, I've had guys, you know, you good around, you know,
so I mean, you know, it's a ball play, you know, everybody
not perfect but you know at the same time we try to be close
to the perfect as possible.
So I mean just keeping your head up and just knowing you can
do much more than what it does.
Yeah, and I think this team has a lot more positive energy
and spirit to level and I believe that it's still not over.
Can you talk about what this team needs to do at this point
to go ahead and right the ship and make it to that playoffs?
I mean, you know, it's a lot we can say we can be done.
You know, we are on board.
So obviously we've been at practicing just going about things
of, you know, what we've done in the past we need to change
and we need to do better and what we put on tape or what
we've done to even put us in that predicament being on board,
but you know as offensive guy, you know, you know what I'm
gonna say.
I need the ball, you know, obviously touch on it more give
the offense more than what we've been doing contribute more
and you know, obviously get to ripping out these defensive
guys, whatever they got going.
So I mean, all I can say is we need to execute on this off
of the side and just be us because we had a guys we got
the Intel, you know, so you go out there on Saturday Sunday
when we do play and just keep going, you know, so I mean
nothing else but execute our plays and just keep going.
Charleston talk a little bit about the XFL opportunity
and what it's meant to you.
I mean, it means a lot, you know, I thank God for this.
I love football, you know, it's a great opportunity for
everybody that's on the same field as me and you know, I'm
just blessed to be here.
I appreciate everybody that brought me here.
You know, it's just a lot I can say but you know, I thank
God for all that has been done and you know this opportunity
I would not have passed up anything, you know, so I love
football, you know, I'm here for I'm here for it.
So I mean, you know, you got me here.
So let's ball out at Charleston.
Jeff Barnes team of BS media.
This was your breakout week this season four weeks.
We've had four different receivers have a kind of breakout
week. What are you going to do to continue this momentum
that you have going for you right now?
I mean, all I can say is I'm going to try to touch the
end zone every chance I get so, you know, every game trying
to touch the end zone.
Hey Charleston.
We lost the audio there for a second.
I don't know.
You can you can you try talking again?
It looks like you're locked up.
Yeah, I didn't know if he was waiting for a question or
free froze.
No, I think he froze.
See if we can get him to try to maybe sign back in.
Fair enough.
Yeah.
There we go.
It was connected to my air pod.
My bad.
All good.
Let's let's you want to revisit that question because we
didn't get much of the answer.
Okay.
Do you need to repeat the question?
You can.
All right.
Basically just saying so far every week has been a different
receiver that's come up production.
You've had the big production this week.
How do you plan on continuing that production going forward?
Getting open for my quarterback, you know, give him a greater
look to, you know, passing lane and get the ball to me and
just make plays for this team, you know, not much to be said,
but make plays and obviously I need all I need all the plays
I can get and deep balls.
I'm waiting for him.
You know, I'm here for my quarterback short balls as well,
but you know, I run by anybody on defense.
So, I mean, that would be a plus for our team and I mean, just
give me more involved as well and just all of us execute all
our plays and come to it, you know, so I mean nothing else,
but you know, put it all online and get these W's.
Charleston, you're a guy that's been there on the roster
basically for at least all the games and further beyond.
I'm sure, but there's some other guys too that have come in
lately, you know, the Jalen Smiths and now Quentin Flowers,
another element to kind of two questions, a two-parter with
this one.
First of all, like Jalen Smith as an example, somebody who came
in new, immediately making an impact, got a touchdown in his
first home game, second game playing when he wasn't on the
roster in a week and a half.
What is it about this team?
And certainly you'd be a part of that as a guy who's been
there, you know, for the entirety of the season.
What's kind of there in the environment, if you will,
that kind of helps guys come in and pick up and get
up to speed immediately?
Yeah, like I said, you know, we got ballplayers on this team.
So, I mean, you coming in here, you seeing guys on next to
you, you know, okay, they just ready to make a play.
So, I mean, I'm sure you fit right in, make a play right
as well.
So, you know, when opportunity come, execute, you know, you
can stand out.
But for sure, that's a plus having Jalen in and all the other
tight ends as well.
So, yeah, I would just say, just being prepared, you know,
our meetings that we go through and just having guys, older
guys on our team.
I'm not sure how old Jalen is, but having older guys talking
through different concepts, you know, you'll learn quick.
And with that in mind, you know, coach has said to us and
he's probably said the same thing to you guys that he's
not shy about making changes, moving things around. From
your perspective as a receiver, what kind of challenges
that providing for you in practice or how have you kind
of adjusted to having a lot of movement around there, especially
at the quarterback position?
Yeah, you've got a new guy that might be coming in this
week, right?
Yeah, I mean, you know, even in college, you know, I was
at Oklahoma.
So I'm used to having a new quarterback almost every year,
if not every week.
So, I mean, any guy that can throw the ball to, you know,
just get it out there to let our receivers make plays.
I'm the same guy every down.
So I'm going to give whoever at quarterback a great
look, you know, so I'm not out here just doing it for fun
either.
So, I mean, we can get action going, but I'm glad with
whoever that quarterback throwing the ball.
So far, you guys, you know, it's 0-4.
You've shown signs of improvement, but it just hasn't
seemed to be enough to get that first W.
How are you guys rallying around each other? Because
coaches only can push you guys so much.
It's got to still come from the locker room itself.
How are you guys rallying around each other to try and
make sure that next game, when if things don't go well
early, that you don't fall into that, oh, it's all happening
to us again.
Yeah, just just having in our mind that we're not going
to do that, you know, having in our mind that we don't
go out here and make our play, you know, having in our
mind that we won't be on the bus side, on this flight
side. So, I mean, you know, we're not even thinking
about losing, you know, so I mean, we still going up
regardless and just focus on the little things and to
better ourselves from our previous weeks, you know,
just be overcome everything, you know, we've done.
So, I mean, we just got to show it. So, I mean, not too
much to be said, but that.
Yeah, that's that's really remarkable that you can
adjust on a fly to different quarterbacks because even
Jerry Rice said when he went from Joe Montana to Steve
Young, it was kind of difficult for him. But yourself,
how does that make that transition easier for you, for
you to go to different looks of quarterbacks? I mean,
you know, just being the same guy, you know, running
out the ball the same speed, you know, not running any
lazy routes, you know, just give my QB the perfect look
to throw the ball that way. So, I mean, just having in
your mind, that's the first thing, then going out there
to do it. So, yeah, that's about it.
Couple more if you got them guys.
Do you want them to go deep to you more often in this,
you know, this next game or for the rest of the season?
I mean, I really don't care who touched the ball. I'm
me in the mix going deep is a plus. Obviously, I can't
be stopped, not just talking either. I can't be guarded,
but I mean, going deep is one of my positives. I can
say. Also, I run routes, so I run the whole route tree.
So either way, I just like the ball being thrown in
the air. So, I mean, if the running back is running
deep down the field, I love it. I say that by my
God, every time they run routes, I'm on the field
just, you know, we all just all come together, you know,
so I mean, it's going to show on tape. We're going to
show it on Saturday.
You know, Charleston, you say a lot of the stuff I
expect receivers to say the city, you know, so that's
definitely that's definitely something refreshing to
hear some swag from a receiver. But is do what is it
about this week against Vegas that makes you feel
like, hey, this is the week we get the dub, you know,
we just we tired of stuff, you know on for mean
obviously a lot of guys haven't been this is on a
record like this ever on a team. I'm sure you know,
but it's professional. So, you know, things are
different and you know, we didn't take it day by
day to get to that day. But you know this week is
just different because we both two teams that we
both looking for a W. It's hard hard to get W. I
can say it's easy, but you know, everybody out there
going there for this, but somebody got to win, you
know, that's going to be us, but we just got to go
out there and do it, you know, but we definitely
are treating as we did from all the other weeks.
So I mean, yeah. So we saw Houston throw out the
double pass last week, Charleston. How's the
throwing arm? What's a potentially might dot and
toss one for a touchdown this week. Oh, yeah, you
know, it's there. I mean, I got that arm. I felt
the ball, you know, obviously, I thought kids
would throw it back or something. But I mean, I
played quarterback when I was younger. I ain't
tripping on throwing it. So yeah, I'm good at
doing this. I mean my OC they all know. So I mean
it's whatever.
