“Every direction in Madrid, there’s something interesting!” – Bob Greenawalt
Madrid is shockingly delightful. We walked all over the city in what will surely be the first of many visits back to this wonderful Spanish city. Every direction in Madrid, there’s something interesting!
Bob’s favorite place in Madrid was the Plaza Mayor, a classic European central square with scores of charming outdoor restaurants and local entertainment. Lisa’s was gelato scooped to resemble flowers the size of her head!
While strolling around the fascinating streets, shopping, people-watching, and trying the excellent food, we encountered an unexpected air parade over our heads. We also visited the Museo de Jamon (Ham Museum), and Bob ordered up a classic ham sandwich.
We walked through lush, wondrously landscaped Retiro Park, Madrid’s Central Park, and discovered the Crystal Palace (which is an art center, and while it was closed for renovation, the views inside were awesome), enjoyed street music, walked the paths and crossed creeks, and saw a lovely lake where you can go canoeing.
We also placed a love lock in Plaza Mayor and visited the Palacio de Vasquez (part of the Reina Sofia ticket, but pretty uninspiring), Museum of Anthropology (pleasant, even though Bob thought it was the Museum of Archeology until he noticed the dearth of dinosaurs). We averaged about 7 miles a day walking around Madrid, and finally tried the clean, modern Metro when our feet got sore.
Our last breakfast, featuring tortillas Española and churros with chocolate sauce in an outdoor restaurant near the train station, was a mouthwatering invitation to return. P.S. Plaza de la Villa is just a very old plaza. Learn more at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plaza_de_la_Villa

Well, we've moved on from Lisbon and uh
this morning we flew from Lisbon to
Madrid and uh this is our first stop on
our multi-day stop in Madrid and that is
right here is the Plaza Mayor.
Plenty of places to choose from to eat.
old Spanish architecture
and I am looking forward to going
through the process of choosing one of
these uh one of these places on the on
the plaza to have dinner tonight. So, it
should be a very interesting couple of
days.
And here it is. My incredible
>> Look at that thing.
>> My gosh.
>> Oh my god.
>> Oh.
Oh.
Uh, so here's the Plaza Mayor at night.
We uh just finished eating and uh taking
a little trip to the gelato place for
Lisa for her dessert.
>> And uh you know about an hour ago this
place was hopping. Now it's about I
don't know 10:30 11:00
10:45 starting to settle down a little
bit. But uh this was a really really
great first evening here. We stayed here
for the ambiance. There's hundreds of
other places that I want to eat here
that I've seen in Madrid. And uh it's
going to be uh be a great couple of days
in the uh culinary gastronomical uh
department.
Okay. So this is the mo de hamon.
So we got to look at the
>> mo de hamon. Yeah. So, we got we gota
look at the hammon in here. And here
they are
and 50 leg of ham and take it home with
€29 a kilo for that one. Special
€39.
55 a kilo. So, obviously I'm not a hone
expert. understand what the difference
is.
Got the 1350.
Here we go.
More up here.
More up here.
I'm going to I'm going to have to come
into here and have lunch one day.
Dessert
cuts will come up.
I'm not completely ignorant of what they
uh what they are.
>> All right, we're strolling up one of the
walking pedestrian areas here in Madrid
at this place with the terron. I don't
quite understand.
We have
>> almond
>> and we have the mo.
It's almond candy and chocolate cake and
this quaint. We're at this point in
time, we're looking for our afternoon
gelato. I think we'll find some.
>> We can find a Guinness here
>> pretty soon.
Turkish food.
All right.
Every direction is something
interesting.
Let's go.
>> We came from there.
>> Let's go this way.
>> Did we not come from there?
>> No, I Beautiful building here in the
early evening.
>> Wa.
>> Well, we don't know what's happening
here today, but there are a heck of a
lot of planes flying over.
Wow.
What is going on here today?
We were in our uh Airbnb. We heard a
bunch of uh fighter jets going over and
we wondered what was going on. Now we're
out walking and we see all these planes
>> and we asked an old guy and he said it
was an annual event.
>> So, we don't know what it is, but that's
pretty cool.
There it is. Wow.
Now we're getting to the helicopters.
>> It's a parade.
>> It is a hair parade.
It's a fountain in the middle of some
random intersection here.
>> So I'm back. Go to Roso de Hmon to get
myself a sandwich.
>> And there's going to get little boadio.
I'm only queso.
>> And here's my sandwich from the
del hamon. I took it out because I
wanted to uh eat in the botanical
garden, but I can't quite find a way
into the botanical garden. So, I'm just
going to eat my sandwich here
in the middle of this little parkway in
the middle of the road.
Wow, check out this vertical wall here.
It's pretty cool.
Uhoh,
>> that's cool.
>> So, we're about to go into a park, but
on this side there's a big old structure
here. Beautiful architecture apartment
building, plus
>> the architecture is interesting.
>> Plus this other building here, which we
have no clue what it is.
>> They got something interesting up here
on the hill.
We're going to wait and go into the
park. All right. So, we're about to go
into
park and through the uh the Puerto del
Soul on Hel Kaido uh which is the uh the
gate of the fallen angel. So, this is uh
uh much like Central Park in New York,
quite big. And off we go.
Multiple paths here.
fountain and looks like a little
place to get some food refreshments over
here.
>> Wow. Glad we came here. This is I'm glad
we came here. This is just a really
pretty
little bridge.
Nice little creek here. The ducks
coming up on the Crystal Palace.
Now we know why it's called the Crystal
Palace.
>> As I suspected, didn't you?
>> I didn't know why.
>> You didn't?
>> Yeah. I thought maybe they might have I
don't know, emeralds and sapphires.
Uh, it's temporarily closed
unfortunately as they have some
maintenance work to do.
So, we can't get in. Google was right.
It was temporarily closed,
but we came here anyhow.
Looking out on the steps of the Crystal
Palace.
Got some street performers over here.
It's really beautiful here.
No, it's not this. I think it's a
Palasio de Velasquez. But uh the museum
hina Sophia
uh owns this and uses it as a uh as
another exhibition area. So hopefully
we've still got enough time to go in
here. It is about 5:20. probably closes
at 6, but we may be able to sneak in
because we should be able to use our
pass, our ticket that we bought earlier
in the day for uh for the Karina Sophia.
Here it is, the Palacio de Velasquez.
Well, the uh the temporary exhibits here
in the uh
Alas de Velasquez
were pretty uninspiring. There are a lot
of empty walls. Um, based on what we saw
here, we would not recommend you coming
and uh and using your valuable time in
Madrid to come to this place unless you
seen something you especially want to
see.
Wow. Here's the lake at the park.
Could rent a rowboat.
Unfortunately, uh, we would do that.
Unfortunately, we have a flamco show a
little later on and uh we are we don't
have the time for that. But that looks
like so much fun. I'd get in that boat,
let uh Lisa do the uh do the paddling,
do the rowing there, and I just sit back
and be the king.
A couple places to have some snacks,
place to eat here. This is just a
beautiful place, you know, to spend uh
spend some time.
relaxing time
>> and uh it's uh we this was never really
on our itinerary. Did want to sort of
see the place and uh we've we've uh done
a good job here of come coming to the
park and uh and really enjoying a couple
hours we spent here.
>> Another fountain in the park.
coming out of the park.
>> Wow, it's just beautiful here.
So, another little square here
surrounded by restaurants.
We are going to
check out some menus
and decide
where we're going to be eating after the
flamingco show. Well, just check out the
tile wall of this place, this restaurant
actually. We got this one.
And then across the little road, we got
this
This must be, as Luca said, this is must
be the uh Italian section.
Well, here we are at the Plaza de la
Villa. Don't know what it's famous for,
but uh obviously it's famous for
something cuz big tour groups here.
Everyone's taking pictures. We'll try to
find figure that out later and tell you
in the comments.
It's
>> not the most scenic.
>> And you know the lock here
>> in La Plaza Mayor.
>> Today we are going to venture into the
Madrid Metro.
We've done a lot of walking the last few
days. I've been doing about seven miles.
So, uh
we're going to uh
take the metro today.
This is only about three blocks from our
Airbnb. So, in good shape now. It's
always the uh it's always a little
difficult navigating the metro system.
Right here we do. And uh going to figure
out what we what we need to do here.
Okay.
>> Oh, good.
>> Insert purchase. We have to purchase the
transport.
>> And just like that, her card pops out.
>> All righty.
>> And it's got one journey on it.
>> Okay. That was €4, right?
>> Yep. I probably should have taken that.
>> Okay. Yep.
>> You want to do mine?
>> You have recharged one metro single
ticket. Okay. Yes. I'm going to do
yours.
Here
it comes from the top.
>> Why did that say the uh that
>> and here we are the inside subway.
Clean, reasonable.
Of course, it's 2:00 in the afternoon.
Not too crowded.
It's not the rush hour traffic, but we
don't have a seat. So, it is uh pretty
uh pretty traffic.
There's one of the big traffic circles
here. Fountain in the middle. Got the uh
Ministry of Agriculture right over here,
right next to the train station.
All right, as we continue looking for
breakfast.
And here's our breakfast.
Check it out.
>> Oh my god.
>> Look at our location.
>> And this is how I envision
my retirement. Sitting here on the
little outdoor cafe
being surrounded by fountains. Great
food.
>> Dipping churros in chocolate. Oh my god.
>> Remember the place we had breakfast at
is El Briante.
Well, today before our train trip to
Barcelona, have a little bit of time.
So, we're going to go into the Museum of
Anthropology, which is right across the
street from the Toa train station. So,
uh we're going to go in here
and um
see what they got.
>> All right, here we're going to the
museum.
Animal fight started there in the
Philippines.
Now these are interesting
little Hawaii figures here.
So, Lisa, what did you think of the
museum?
>> Well, it wasn't what I expected at all.
>> No, it wasn't what I expected either cuz
I misread the map. I thought it was the
Museum of uh of uh what I think it was
>> archaeology. Archaeology.
>> But when we didn't see any dinosaur
bones or anything, we realized it was a
museum of anthropology. Yeah.
>> And I mean, it was it was really perfect
for only having an hour or so of energy
before leaving Madrid to visit a museum.
And we learned about the peoples of uh
the Americas, Africa, Asia, and about
the Chilean coup. But weirdly, there was
nothing about the peoples of Spain.
>> Yeah.
>> But still, it was really interesting.
>> It was interesting. It, you know,
allowed us to kill an hour or so.
>> Exactly. And uh
>> did what we needed it to do.
>> Yeah. It was more interesting for Lisa
than me, but uh nonetheless, you know,
you got some time that you really want
to kill, you can come here. But pretty
inexpensive.
>> Yeah. Because it's €3 for Lisa. But uh
no,
>> I wouldn't put it at the top of your
list.
>> Definitely not.
>> But hop on in to the Museum of
Anthropology.
>> And until next time, may your suitcase
always be messy. And don't forget to
subscribe to our channel and ring that
bell to be notified of upcoming videos.
