The new 623-foot ship "Musala" arrived from Lake Superior and passed under the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth, MN.
Many people have been waiting for this ship to pick up its anchor and head into Duluth. The ship was built in 2023, so it's super new and very impressive looking! This was the first time I saw this ship and I couldn't believe how high up out of the water it was as it approached the Aerial Lift Bridge. The white paint on the superstructure was extremely bright and fresh too. Obviously, there were a few scrapes along the haul as it went through the Soo Locks and other places on its way to Duluth.
Besides this ship being new and really tall, the captain blasted a Master Salute with the horn as it arrived in the Duluth ship canal. The three huge yellow deck cranes were very impressive as well.
There was worry that this ship would be stuck because of the labor strike preventing vessel traffic from moving on the St. Lawrance Seaway, but a tentative agreement was reached today meaning this ship will be able to make it back out to the ocean with its cargo. Here's more information about the tentative deal allowing this ship and others to move again.
Boat friends, we got a good one. Take a look in the distance, the Masella. It's an ocean-going vessel.
Port of registry is Malta. Now guess what? The pilot boat and the ship were talking via the radio.
They're going to make an attempt, so we'll see what happens here. Pilot boat just dropped off
the pilot. This is called the Seabear. Aerial lift bridge only has to go up just a little bit
to let it under. We're about to get the show on the road. You can see the flag up there.
I'll get you caught up here on the weather and the wind here in one moment, but let's
do a quick 360. Take a look at the sky cover. Very overcast today. Show you what's going on
before we get rocking with the ship. Here's a quick look at the ship. Take a look at those
cranes. This is going to look awesome going by us. Let me show you what's up with the weather.
36 degrees, 14 mile per hour wind out of the northwest. Wind chill, 27 degrees. Masella's
doing 5.3 knots as you can see right here. It just left Anchorage right outside the Duluth
piers. It's going to go through the aerial lift bridge right by us. I do see in blue right there,
that's a tug. I'll double check what that is. It looks like it's the Missouri. You can see
it displayed right there. The Masella is going to go through the harbor basin under the Blotnik
and load wheat over at CHS. Well, you have the ship in the distance. It's going to be making
its way in here in a few moments, but take a look at what's going on. That's a surfer
right there on the ledge. Take a look. Got a surfer catching a wave right there. As usual,
when there's strong wind and storms are in the area, it produces plenty of water activity.
As you can see, we got the North Pier Lake that is formed once again. Take a look at this log
that's wedged right into the breakwater off the North Pier. Here's the lift bridge operation
center that we always look at. I mean, if I'm in the middle of the bridge, I might as well do a
360 for you. Check things out. Ready to assist on the left. That's the Missouri. On the right,
that's a Kentucky. They're waiting for this big ship to make its way onto the bridge.
The wind is definitely picking up right now. Well, before we see this huge ship,
here's some facts so we can get acquainted. The Masella is 623 feet in length, built in 2023
in China, so this is really a newer vessel. Cargo capacity, 20,000 tons. Three large deck
cranes, as you will see. Six holds, six hatches. Port of registry is Malta. Seagulls are having a
land party over there. You can see the crew members in the orange jackets up there on top
of the bow. Look at those massive anchors. Huge. This is a beast of a ship.
What a great looking ship. Boat friends, this is a giant up close. Wow.
Definitely testing the airy lift bridge. I mean, this is one of the taller ships with the cranes,
and I know we see these big lift ships, but this is a good one.
And I can already see that the captain is making a pivot. An early turn. Let's look at the
superstructure. You can see the bridge up top. Wow. What a good looking ship. Take a look at
that rudder there. First time I've ever seen this. It is definitely living up to the hype.
Look at that lifeboat. Give you a nice full perspective as this vessel goes under the
aerial lift bridge. Awesome. Let's walk with it. Not going to shut it down now. We're going to go
check out what's going on with these tugs as it makes the move in the harbor basin. I want to
check this out. Oh, there's some unique colors there on the stack. See the yellow and the red
and the white. You can see the Kentucky on the stern side that's assisting. On the other side of the
masala is the Missouri. That's the starboard side. What an awesome ship. First time I've seen it.
Definitely would love to see it again. And what it's going to do is go over into this direction
under that bridge and it's going to go load some weeds. Well, boat friends, if you enjoyed
