LATE SEASON DEER IN OKLAHOMA

Real smooth ride. We're down in the jungle. I'm gonna find a good spot and get out of here.
I'm on a spot. On to the next. Let's go check it out over here.
Okay, spot number three. This is the same spot we killed last year.
So, I put camera batteries in this camera. Sit back tonight and see what happens.
First morning in Oklahoma. Up in a stand that I set up in the springtime when we were out here
hog hunting. And, uh, ran and put a camera out here yesterday and there's some does over here
overnight. But, it's pretty windy up on this little knop. We haven't seen a deer yet. Probably
been light for 30 minutes. There's a couple deer that I think we're going to probably target this
week. There's one deer called Hershey's that was actually a deer that we were chasing last year.
Probably a couple hundred yards over here. We had him on trail camera a few times and I saw him in
daylight once. And, I ended up killing the deer that I killed. But, he's back this year. He actually
might have went downhill a little bit, but he's still a big 10. And, then there's a couple other
really nice deer that are around and that the guys got photos of. So, we're probably gonna,
after this morning sit, run around too and get a couple more spots set up for the week.
I'm really just hoping a doe walks by so we can crack the ice,
shoot a doe or two. So many does on this place. If you guys have seen the last videos, it's just,
it's unreal. So, we really have to cut the numbers down and help the bucks out a little bit.
So, we'll sit tight. And, uh, this might be the tallest point in Oklahoma right here. So,
we're getting pretty, pretty winded out. We picked the wrong stand. It's a good deer showing up.
Showing up on one of our other stands, which is fine. Point of interest. Could be a giant back
here. Just in the nick of time. It's two o'clock. We're gonna zip up here. One of our spots, we got
a tree picked out. We're gonna go hang and hunt. Jump in it. And, I feel really good. We got a good
amount of cameras out. A good amount of potential sets on the whole property. Um, so, I know there's
a lot of good bucks back up in here. We actually just got a decent one on camera this morning.
So, we'll get back up in here. Hang and hunt. See what we see. Probably see some cows.
Oh, yeah. Oh, holy. That's a giant. That's a 60s deer. I don't see him anymore, but I'm down lower.
I'm just gonna sit up just a little bit. That was a big deer.
Not gonna make it far, buddy.
That's what shooting through the shoulder plate of a pig can do.
The 440 grain arrow and a disc mandible. I aimed right on his shoulder. That was perfect.
Big ole pig. Felt good to finally shoot something, too. We haven't shot anything day five.
We're getting hungry. That was legit. Good morning. Just barely cracked light and he came just running
in all by himself, big lone boar, and he died in a really good spot where he won't affect the rest
of the hunt. So, man, that whack smashed right through his shoulder plate. Just absolutely
drenched and a big old sucker of a pig. Oh, man, that's nasty. We need deer, though. We literally
We're gonna leave it up to fate to where to sit tonight. We're gonna use this morel dice.
If it lands facing up on this five, we're going to go to a spot called the Y. If it lands
on four, going to go to a spot on the west end. If it lands on two,
fate is really going to speak and we're going to go to a spot where there's no
surveillance trail camera or anything. The Y, new set, west. If it lands on anything else,
we got to re-roll. Five, the Y. We got a hanging hunt now.
This is the same spot we sat this morning with a different tree. This is the first day we've been
able to come into this spot in the morning. I'm pretty pumped up about it. It's where Hershey's
has been and Big Deer. So, there's a couple of them running around back in here, but we've only
been able to sit afternoon so far and the morning has been pretty active on this camera. So,
north wind. It's cold finally. It's like 40 degrees.
Windy. We'll probably sit here tonight as well unless something happens somewhere.
And my saddle got left, I left it in the back of the can-am and it got rained on last night, so
that's good. We shoot a deer in 30 minutes, it won't matter.
After the morning sit, we tore our set down and we moved southwest about 50 yards.
I kept thinking that with our north wind it's kind of skirting a couple trails
that I don't like. We actually, right at first light, had some does that busted.
So, moved over, got back up in the tree, dipped out for a couple hours, and now we're back in. It's
107. So, we got a lot of time before deer start moving, but I feel good about this spot. Our
wind's blowing a little bit more of a dead area compared to just even 50 yards over there.
So, I'm hoping this little micro move maybe does something. I think they're, based on camera, a lot
of deer are shifting through some trails and are like walking right by the camera, which is just
right here, which would put them 20 yards right here. Bunch of rubs and everything, little rub
line. So, we'll see what happens. Sit tight. We got a southwest wind tomorrow, so we can't hunt
southwest wind. Spot we haven't sat yet. It is cold this morning, which is fantastic.
28 degrees. This is what it should have been this whole time.
I'm just afraid that this cold's gonna shock them and they're not gonna move.
I bet they'll move later, like 8 or 9 o'clock. After this frost burns off,
we might shoot some does at this spot today. If some come in later, we'll shoot some.
And there's a lot of does up here where we are.
We've almost came this out here a couple times, but we've just been
persistent on Hershey's, and today we're gonna bounce around. Tonight we might go somewhere
different also. I left my bow out in the can-am, and it nearly froze solid last night.
It's so much moisture in the air that the entire bow is frosted, so this morning I'm gonna scratch
it all off, the arrows and the rest and everything. But we should be good. That's about all I have.
There's so many trees in here that we were bobbing and weaving.
Just, they were feeding around just on everything. She was dead running the second that arrow went
through her.
She ducked that like crazy.
Doe number one. This one was a perfect shot. Back in the tree, at the doe killing tree.
We're not gonna shoot any does tonight, just bucks. Sometimes you win, sometimes
you lose. We lost this trip. We lost the Deere Smarter. We're packing up our things, picking up
cameras. One of the tougher hunts in a long time. We didn't even have really a close encounter with
the shooter buck, which just blows, but it's a good reminder that it is hunting. No matter how good of
a property, no matter how good of a time of year, it's still hunting. We're gonna pick up the rest
of our things so that the pigs don't eat them, and then we out of here. Headed back north.
It's not over until it's over. It's beginning of January and I'm making a solo trip
back down to Oklahoma. We got a couple deer that are still showing up.
Just naturally going back to bed like the last couple mornings right in the spot that Jake and
I earlier in December were really, really hunting. So I was just sitting there twiddling my thumbs
and finally I said, all right, I'm gonna go down and do it. So I made the drive today. We're about
two hours out and it's just getting dark right now, but I'm gonna go put a couple more cameras
out tonight in the dark, and then like the next three days we got a north or northwest wind,
which is what we need to get in there. So a little solo mission. Hopefully I'm not crazy for doing it
and something pans out. So two hours and then we'll run around, get a little bit of sleep,
and then we're probably gonna hunt mornings even though it's so late because
we're slipping in close to the bedding area and hopefully try to make a play on them.
Finally up in the tree. I got here two days ago and got in at like 9 p.m, 8 p.m.
Ran around in the dark, put out some cameras, put out some feed,
and yesterday was an absolute complete wash. It rained all morning
and then was like 30 mile an hour winds in the afternoon. So I decided just to literally not hunt,
just do nothing, which I think paid off because I washed away all my scent
and kind of let everything chill out from getting it ready. So pretty high anticipation this morning
even though it's in January. It's a morning hunt for one. I'm probably gonna sit all day
because I'm just nervous about getting out of here and getting back in,
just in general in this spot. So I got a lot of hand warmers I'm gonna put on my jacket.
It's about 20 degrees and a north wind. It's chilly. It's 12 o'clock. There's a bunch of deer
I already got a couple does moving out at about 100 yards. I'm hoping they don't get my wing
because they're kind of circling behind, but got in clean like they're not spooked or anything.
One little fawn was playing over there. I readjusted my setup a little bit. I left everything
in the tree, even my bow. Just brought the cameras, but I readjusted just so that
my filming situation is better, but there's one branch. So
if I end up shooting one tonight and there's a branch in the way,
it might be a thing, but I'm hoping it's not, but it's way better for me for shooting. So
we'll see. It's freezing cold. It's colder today than yesterday. It's about one o'clock.
So sit back. I'm already seeing deer. I bet we'll see deer all night with how cold it is.
22 degrees this morning and I had the brilliant idea to wake up at 3 30 this morning
and get in the tree an hour and a half before legal shooting light
because I keep feeling like my access is so bad that I'm just spooking deer
in the morning or at the night or anytime. So I got in here super early
and one deer went by in the dark and I've seen nothing since,
but it's freezing cold. I feel like cold mornings like this, deer kind of freak out.
There's frost everywhere. All the puddles are frozen driving in. Probably going to sit all day
and today it's my last day. It's probably my last day of the whitetail season of 2024 or 2025.
So I'm gonna give it a grind.
Hopefully that 3 30 a.m was worth it.
