Welcome back to our channel.
If you don't know us yet, we are Teresa and Laura.
We are German teachers.
And in this video we have brought some advanced words for you
at B2 C1 level, which we would like to explain to you.
And we have packaged the whole thing as a quiz.
That means you should actively guess and see if you already know the meanings.
And the whole thing is again part of our series Real German.
That means we don't speak extra slowly,
but we speak our native language authentically,
so that you can really test how well you understand real German.
Exactly.
Shall we start?
We start.
Let's go.
Before we start with the first word,
the note that there is a free PDF to download.
With all the expressions from this video, with example sentences and so on.
That means just click on the link in the video description below.
Then you can type in your e-mail address
and then you get the PDF sent to you for free.
That as a note in advance.
And then I would say, let's start.
Our first word is an adjective and it is called absurd.
Absurd.
We will now give you two possibilities what this adjective could mean.
You can see if you may already know.
So option A.
Absurd means very unpleasant or disgusting.
Or option B.
Absurd means that someone is particularly shy or reserved.
What do you think is right? A or B?
The correct answer is A.
So absurd means that something is really very unpleasant or disgusting.
What does that mean, Laura?
Well, I was just thinking about food, for example.
If you have something in the fridge or maybe not in the fridge right now
and it's quickly spoiled and it might smell or something.
Something disgusting.
Then you would say, wow, that smells disgusting.
Exactly, so with smells.
Something smells disgusting.
Yes, exactly.
Or you could also refer to the behavior of people, I think.
So how he behaved, that was hideous.
So really, really, really bad.
You often hear it in the context of crimes.
So if a crime happens somewhere,
what you can't even imagine how bad it is,
that you say, well, that's a hideous crime.
Or, for example, hideous statements.
So if some politicians or people say something very insulting,
then you can also say, for example, that was a hideous statement.
Yes, exactly.
Yes, exactly, what insults and what just goes too far.
Yes, exactly.
Our second word is also an adjective and that means perfidious.
Perfidious.
Does that mean A, something or someone is particularly behind-the-scenes and mean?
Or B, someone is very neat and precise.
What do you think means precise?
I already say precise.
Perfidious.
What does that mean?
The correct answer is again A.
Someone is very behind-the-scenes and mean.
Maybe we can also explain the word behind-the-scenes a little more precisely,
what that means.
And that's actually always when you're very polite and nice at the front,
but mean at the back.
So, and I think that's also what this perfidious describes,
that you really do something with a plan, with a goal,
and you go a way that is also very morally reprehensible.
So that you, I don't know, are very friendly and open to a person,
and you manage to get the person to trust you,
and then behind his or her back, I don't know, you abuse this trust.
And, I don't know, you steal money from this person or something like that.
Then that's a perfidious plan.
So that's really something that is morally very bad and mean.
And that's this behind-the-scenes.
So that you are not very public, that you are publicly mean, so to speak,
but behind your back.
And always with the plan.
So you are friendly with the plan to harm this other person.
It's not something you do spontaneously or something like that,
but you always have the plan to harm someone.
Then it's a perfidious plan.
Because it's very mean.
Yes, that's perfidious.
The next expression is a colloquial verb,
and that is to mutter something.
To mutter something.
Does that mean A, to finish something with great care,
or B, to do something completely wrong or to mutter something?
A or B?
The correct answer is B.
So to do something completely wrong or to mutter something.
Exactly, so if you can't do anything better or something,
then you could say, oh no, I totally messed that up.
Or you do something wrong, you do it badly,
because you can't do it better or maybe you're not careful enough.
What could you mutter?
Well, I don't know, some recipes or something.
So when I cook and don't pay attention to the quantities,
because I'm just not careful enough,
because I might be doing something else at the same time.
Then I can say, oh man, now I totally messed up the dish.
So I just did it wrong and now it might not taste good.
It might also happen to people who are a bit clumsy,
who have difficulties doing multitasking.
Yes, exactly.
So that's how I would describe it, right?
I would say so too.
Now we actually had quite good words.
We still had the adjective schusselig,
so someone who is not quite up to it,
who is a bit confused.
And we had our verb vermurksen
and the synonym for that is etwas vermatteln.
Exactly, vermasseln, vermurksen.
Yes, exactly.
Very good.
Then we come back to an adjective and that is hirnrissig.
Hirnrissig means that a. something is completely nonsense or stupid
or b. something is very well thought out and logical.
The correct answer is a. something is completely nonsense or stupid.
Exactly.
So in hirnrissig, there are two components.
Once the brain, i.e. the brain in our head
and rissig, in it is the riss.
So you may know that, also the verb reißen.
If you have a piece of paper and you tear it,
then you have a riss in the middle.
That means, hirnrissig means that your brain is broken.
So you do something that is totally stupid
or maybe also really reckless.
So now you're doing something that's dangerous.
And you actually know that a little bit,
but you don't care or you're too naive or something
and you just do it.
I don't know, I'm thinking about
when you're doing a big hike in the Alps
and you do it without a water bottle
and maybe with flip-flops,
then that's totally hirnrissig.
Because it's just dangerous.
Then you would say it's a hirnrissig idea.
So you wouldn't say the person is hirnrissig,
but this idea that the person had is totally stupid.
Or the action is hirnrissig.
Or if you go into the context
that something just doesn't make sense.
I just thought of the German bureaucracy again.
You can finally do some things online now.
But often it's like this,
that happened to me myself,
that it means, unfortunately, some documents are still missing.
Please send them by mail.
And you think, well,
but I did the whole thing extra online.
Why do I have to go to the post office now?
That's hirnrissig.
That doesn't make sense.
Exactly.
So if something just doesn't make sense,
then you can also say,
that's a hirnrissig procedure.
Yes, exactly.
So to speak.
Word number five is an adjective again.
And it's horrible.
Horrible.
Does it mean that
A. Someone is particularly brave
and even admirable.
Or does it mean
B. Something is bad and really scary.
A or B?
The correct answer is B.
So horrible means something is bad and scary.
Yes.
First of all, I thought of an accident.
If a really, really bad accident happens somewhere,
then you would say,
that what happened there is really horrible.
So synonymous with bad,
but to be honest,
a little worse than bad.
Yes.
Or?
So really horrible, so terrible.
One more level more than bad, I would say.
So I think,
yes, you really use that
with such events,
which are also really particularly bad.
So like accidents or war,
you have to say.
So that you say,
a war always has terrible suffering
of the people as a result.
So that's something
you can't really describe in words,
that's how bad it is.
Yes.
Then I would say,
it's horrible.
So with such events,
yes, which are somehow scary
or shocking.
So if something is really,
yes, super bad.
Maybe you also know the adjective,
when you say,
I'm horrified.
So the verb is...
Adjective is horrible.
Exactly.
And someone is horrified about something.
So shocked about something.
Yes, exactly.
The horror,
is there also a noun?
Yes.
Yes, so the horror was great,
for example.
So if something happened,
then you say,
the horror of the population was great.
Very good.
Okay, and our last expression
is again a verb,
and that is...
Does that mean,
A, that you eat something quickly
and completely,
so completely,
or is that B,
that you repair something carefully.
The correct answer is...
A, eat something quickly and completely.
Exactly.
It's actually a colloquial expression,
I would say.
And...
An example,
somehow with a bar of chocolate or something,
suitable for you,
that you somehow say,
wow, I cleaned a whole bar of chocolate
So you ate it all up.
Or a classic example,
like when a child,
wow, my child cleaned a whole pizza,
for example.
So it means,
that it ate up,
that nothing was left of it.
Yes, exactly.
Clean something up.
Here you have to be careful,
because there is also the verb,
to clean something up,
when it comes to repairs.
But that's a certain technique,
so for example,
with a house facade,
you can clean a house wall
with mortar.
That's a certain technique
for repairing.
But that doesn't mean,
that you generally
repair something carefully.
Exactly.
That's very special.
In our example,
to clean something up,
really means,
to eat something up
with a big appetite.
Exactly.
So those were
our six expressions.
