Hello everyone! Today I've brought you some special verbs again,
verbs that sound pretty similar because they have almost the same verb stem,
but have very different meanings.
So you shouldn't confuse these verbs.
In this video, I'll show you five such verb pairs
and, as always, I'll explain the difference to you using a lot of examples.
Let's go!
First, let's talk about to beautify and to beautify.
In both verbs, the adjective beautify is used.
So both of them are somehow about making something more beautiful.
Nevertheless, they don't mean the same thing.
Let's start with beautifying.
To beautify literally means to make something more beautiful
or, to be more precise, to change something so that it is more beautiful or attractive afterwards.
You can also say to change something so that it is more visually appealing afterwards.
Like here.
We beautified the classroom with pictures, flowers and new curtains.
Tamara beautified the boring t-shirt with a print to iron it up.
A little bit of fresh color beautifies the office.
Let's look at the verb to beautify now.
This means to represent something better or more beautiful than it really is.
So it's not about a visual change here,
but to beautify means to represent a situation in such a way
that it appears better or more positive than it really is.
So that means someone is talking about something and leaves out all or some negative aspects.
Here are a few examples.
She beautified the balance so that investors don't get nervous.
That's not a good result. We shouldn't beautify anything there.
Stop beautifying his behavior. We all know he lied.
Let's move on to the next pair of verbs that sound similar.
To brighten and to brighten.
These two verbs also have an adjective, namely bright.
But it can only be found in the meaning of one of these verbs.
There is also a reflexive form for brightening, i.e. to brighten oneself.
To brighten or to brighten oneself has two meanings.
On the one hand, it means to brighten or to illuminate something.
It can also mean to become bright or to cheer up.
Sometimes it's also about a face that becomes friendlier again.
On the other hand, brightening also means to enlighten or to clear oneself.
Here are the examples.
A chandelier brightened the hall firmly.
It switched on the light and the front part of the hut became bright.
When she heard the good news, her face became bright.
And now two more examples for the meaning of brighten or clear oneself.
I don't understand it. Brighten me.
So that means as much as explain it to me or enlighten me.
Such a request is said, however, with a bit of ironic distance.
Here's another example.
The conversation has received the confusing situation.
To brighten on the other hand means something completely different.
To brighten someone means to disturb, annoy or oppress someone with something.
You can also say to annoy someone with something.
Let's take a look at a few more examples.
I don't want to bother you with my complaints any longer.
The actor asked the press not to bother him with questions about his relationship.
We now come to empower and empower.
Empower means to confirm something,
to give something more impression,
that is, to emphasize something.
But it can also mean to empower someone with something or to empower.
Let's take a look at a few sentences with this verb.
He confirmed his statement with a nod.
I would like to confirm my promise from yesterday.
You can rely on me.
And here's another example for the meaning to empower someone with something.
The conversation confirmed my decision to look for another job.
To empower on the other hand has a completely different meaning.
To empower means to be done with something,
to cope with something,
to overcome a problem,
sometimes to endure something,
sometimes to tolerate something.
So it can refer to people.
But abstract things can also be meant.
Let me show you this with a few example sentences.
She has not yet overcome the separation from her boyfriend.
So it means she is not yet done with it.
She is still suffering from the separation.
Our travel plan empowers a few more program points.
This means the plan tolerates even more activities.
We should calmly plan a few more companies.
We would not financially overcome such a disaster.
So it means we could not handle it financially.
We continue with to calm down or to calm down and to calm down.
The first, to calm down, you certainly know that.
To calm down means to calm down something or someone,
to satisfy or to appease.
There is also the verb with reflexive pronouns.
So if I say, for example, he calms down,
then it means he will calm down.
To calm down means to calm down,
also in the sense of getting his excitement under control.
Here are a few examples of both variants.
The dog was very scared,
but Clara managed to calm him down.
Ingwer can calm a nervous stomach.
With the donation she calmed her bad conscience.
And now two more examples for to calm down.
The storm calmed down and it got brighter again.
Calm down, everything will be fine.
On the other hand, there is the verb to calm down.
There is also the word Ruhe in it,
but it means something else.
The preposition auf also belongs to the verb to calm down.
Something is based on something.
And that means something is based on something
or is based on something.
Something has its cause in something.
You can also say something is based on something.
If I show you the examples now,
you will immediately understand
The film is based on true events.
Samira's decision is based on experience.
So that means the basis for her decision is experience.
The price increase is based on the bad harvest this year.
The bad harvest is therefore the cause for the rising prices.
Your inclination is based on reciprocity.
That means you cannot suffer from each other.
Etwas beruht auf Gegenseitigkeit
is, by the way, a conversation.
There is also the expression
Etwas auf sich beruhen lassen.
And that means to leave something alone,
not to pursue something further.
Here is an example.
That means we don't talk about it anymore.
We leave it with this topic now.
Now we are talking about the meanings of
verwirklichen and verwirken.
Verwirklichen, you certainly know that too.
I explain it for the sake of completeness.
Verwirklichen means to put something into reality,
to put something into action,
so to make something come true.
With the reflexive pronoun sich,
so to realize oneself,
it means to become true.
And if you refer to a person,
it means to realize oneself,
that one develops unhindered
according to one's own wishes and talents.
And here are the examples.
Die Stadt hat die Umgestaltung des Parks verwirklicht.
Wir haben unseren Traum von einem eigenen Haus verwirklicht.
In diesen beiden Fällen wurde also etwas
Man hat also irgendeinen Fehler gemacht.
Man hat etwas getan, das man besser nicht getan hätte.
Und verliert deshalb seine Privilegien.
Hier ein paar Beispielsätze.
Sie haben die Frist verstreichen lassen
und damit ihr Recht auf Entschädigung verwirkt.
Mit seinen Lügen hat er ihr Vertrauen verwirkt.
Er hat den Antrag zu spät eingereicht
und damit seinen Zahlungsanspruch verwirkt.
