Hi, my name is Sarah Garfinkel, and I will be performing a monologue from Appropriate by Brandon Jacob Jenkins.
Because there's no one alive who's held me.
Isn't that sad?
There's no one left in this family, in this whole world, who could have told me about the whole me.
The me before I became this.
Dad was the last.
And think whatever you want of him now, but dad knew me, maybe more than I'll ever know me,
and there's nothing anyone can say that is gonna make that love less real.
What's it for if there's no one to tell you about it, to remind you of the things you forgot, or the things you never
even knew you knew?
I always thought family was for that, but we don't seem to be on the same page memory wise.
We can't seem to get our story straight, and why is that? Or is family just a bunch of mismatched memory stories
you tell yourself when you need an excuse to explain how, how trapped you feel, or broken, or cheated?
I wonder what story this weekend's gonna be.
Tell me, Beau, what story are you and Rachel gonna go back and tell everyone that I went crazy and attacked her, that I ruined everything?
Well, I have a request.
If anyone asks, I want you to tell them that this is the weekend your sister died.
I need you to kill me.
Put me out of these stories of, of whatever stories you're telling.
All I really tried to do was love you.
And maybe I don't know how, and maybe I never will, but I need to figure that out for myself.
Starting today.
