Hello everyone, today is going to be epic because this is episode 3 of Sam Meets
presented by Swatch and we're in the marvellous Los Angeles.
And in today's episode we're going to be meeting up with Gustavo Ribeiro,
a professional skateboarder who is mind-blowing with his board control and trickery.
But before we go down to his local skate park to meet up with him,
we're going to warm up the video on these amazing little jumps here
overlooking that sickest backdrop ever.
Oh yes, what a trail!
Yes, that's unreal!
What a cool backdrop as well!
Whoa, what a sick trail that was, epic warm-up.
But it's now time to go and meet Gustavo.
I think things are going to really ramp up.
Let's get over there.
Yo Gustavo, how you doing mate?
Good to see you.
Nice to see you bro.
And meet you.
Yeah, this is our first time we've ever met which is super cool
and that's why this project's fun because I get to meet all the athletes.
So you are a professional skateboarder?
Yes sir.
An absolute boss.
You've brought me to one of your local spots here then.
I think first maybe you can show us some of your skills, yeah?
Okay, let's get into that then.
Let's go.
We're straight in.
First team sendings coming at Maisy Goss.
I want to see some grind action.
Grinds?
Yeah, yeah.
Let me see if this is sliding.
Oh yes, it's unreal!
This is like what you dream of.
This is like if I stand on a skateboard, that's what I dream to be able to do.
It's so cool to see it in real life.
Thank you.
You want to do something over this?
Yeah, let's try the flare thing, maybe.
We want to do a side-by-side trick and in my mind
a kickflip air and me doing a flare could look amazing.
That ramp's a bit small but I'm sure we can make something work.
We'll see.
Right, let's see a kickflip then.
Wow, I reckon this is like worth a slow-mo clip.
What's like one of the most fun sort of tricks you could do on a grind ledge like this?
There's a couple ones.
There's a lot of tricks actually.
Personally, I love rails.
Okay.
Like rails.
Oh, could you show us a rail?
Yeah, for sure.
I'm going to do a couple tricks.
Just like walking.
This is a back 50.
This is like one of the easiest tricks that you can learn.
Okay, I won't be trying that.
I'm going to do a couple ones.
Oh, that is well steezy.
Just to finish a hard one.
Okay.
I'm going to do crooks and ollie flip.
Crook grind.
Yeah.
And then ollie flip out.
Oh my god.
Yes, please.
Let's see if I can do it for sure.
Yeah, okay.
Get it.
Yeah.
Wow.
Oh my goodness.
And you got a bonus.
That's ridiculous.
Thank you, brother.
It's actually amazing to see in person.
Thank you so much.
I want to show you my skateboard skills.
I'm kind of excited to see what you got.
Let's see you ollie up these.
Oh, chilling.
We got to like do like a level up.
Okay.
You think could you ollie the hole?
I try it.
Oh, it's huge though.
That gap's massive.
Oh no.
Oh, first try.
What's going on?
I love skating.
Well, that was so good.
That was my time to shine.
Low key, I was a little scared because I didn't want you to get hurt.
Yeah, why?
But then you just land that first try.
No problem.
Wow, skating's easy, man.
We've just arrived at Inglewood pump track.
And the best thing about pump tracks is you can ride bikes on them
and you can skate on them as well.
So I think we're going to have some pretty cool follow trains here and stuff.
And also you can try a bit of biking.
I'm so down.
So I think we're going to warm up for a bit, get used to it.
And then it's time for you to get dangerous.
Let's go.
Can you jump over me, you think, somewhere?
Okay, yeah, let's try it.
Oh, my God.
Come on, mate.
You got to get it now.
That was well cool.
That was pretty scary, actually.
You're so high there.
Wow.
That was crazy, bro.
That's my favorite thing at the pump track
because you can use it always as like a jump box everywhere.
I was not going to think about that until I see you looking for this.
Right, so we've seen we can both ride it on our own vehicles.
It's your turn to try it on the bike.
We've got you a mountain bike then.
The thing for me with skateboarding that I can't really understand is the no helmet thing.
Like none of you guys wear a helmet.
I've grown up always having a helmet.
So I did bring in one.
Obviously, our energy drinks don't match up.
So you're not going to wear a helmet.
That's your choice.
Yeah, stand up.
There we go.
Oh, you're flying, mate.
Keep those feet level.
And then just pump it like a skateboard and you'll be good.
How do you get speed?
Just the pumping.
Like this bike could probably be easier.
You can try this one.
Here we go.
He's got it on the slope bike.
No pedaling.
Do you like my style?
Flying on that one.
He's off track.
Let's see a jump.
Get some air.
Yes, he got air.
That was impressive.
I think we've got to get one slow motion clip of you getting a bit of air time.
You've got it.
Fully aired.
You're almost a professional mountain biker now.
Air time already.
That's well cool.
Okay, it'd be rude not to chase each other on skateboards around here.
I think we should.
You can follow me.
Bit of GoPro action.
See if I don't face plant.
Here we go.
Are you ready?
Skate train.
Oh, that was well good.
Skateboards and pump tracks is so much fun.
You got air as well on the bike.
A little air.
What a day.
Well cool.
But what we want to do now is get into the thick of it
and find out what real street skating is all about.
You're going to take us to a street spot somewhere, right?
Yes, sir.
Let's go.
Let's go and get involved in that then.
Yeah, here we go.
We just arrived at the next location
and this is an iconic street skating spot here in LA.
This is what I expect of what street skating is.
Yeah, this is a street skate spot.
There's not like everything perfect at a skate park.
So we try to skate with the obstacles that we have
and we kind of build some like little random stuff.
As you can see the little sled piece.
So I guess like I really needed to bring you here
to like try to have a session,
like meet a little bit to what is street skating.
wow
oh
that was proper.
Let's see that in slow-mo then.
Oh, no.
Wow.
The danger ramp.
I was literally like waiting for that to happen.
You need bigger wheels.
Yeah.
Oh, yo.
All right, let me try the 180 on there
and try and fakie off of it.
Let me see.
Come on.
First tee.
Wow.
Take that.
Damn.
So street.
Iconic street spot.
Yes.
I'm going to try a better flip.
I'm going to try like an Ollie flip out.
Oh, yes, please.
Oh, yo, yo.
Oh, yes.
Nice.
I even put the mic.
I put the mic down for some extra audio on landing.
That was amazing.
That's unthinkable skills you've got there.
Thank you.
I think it's actually the first time
that I skate in this manifold.
Oh, really?
I'm like more like a technical person
and I like the little edges.
Yeah, yeah.
So like I actually never come to this side.
We're pushing him to learn new manoeuvres.
Pushing the limits, bro.
There we go.
But hey, talking about limits.
I want to see your kickflip.
Oh, come on.
You got it.
This is it.
Straight in.
First try like that.
I'll put a hundred bucks.
Let's go.
Oh, no, no hundred bucks.
Right.
I've got to get this.
Oh, my God.
That would so be it.
What am I doing?
I think the only thing that you're not doing
is making like jumping with both feet on the boards.
So I've got to go like.
You need to jump on the board.
You're just like putting one foot.
OK.
Oh, OK.
You're going to do it.
You're going to do it for sure.
What a day.
Like five minutes.
Yes.
I'm going to quit biking.
He's going to quit skating.
We're going to switch.
We're going to switch on the SWAT team now
as different athletes.
Wait, hold here.
Yeah.
This has to be the new thumbnails
on the swatch page for our sports.
That was well cool.
Thank you very much for that meet up, mate.
That was, couldn't have asked for anything better.
Episode three has been an absolute blast.
But don't be too alarmed
because we still have one more episode coming up
where I will be in Paris with Mathias Dandoir,
a Flatland BMXer,
where things are going to get ridiculous.
See you in the next one.
Bye.
