Welcome back to the road! Today we are making a stop to see what's up with Little Rock, Arkansas. This is a city with a lot of surprises, good ones in fact. Little Rock is often on internet bad lists, but I found something very different in person. There is great entertainment, great green spaces, and great people. I hope you enjoy the visit with us.
Welcome back to the road
Today we are visiting Little Rock, Arkansas
Little Rock got its name from the French explorer Jean Baptiste de la Harpe
when he spotted a small rock formation that marked the end of the Mississippi delta
and the beginning of the Ouachita mountains.
Little Rock is a medium size city as cities go in America,
But it is the largest city and capital of the state of Arkansas
Some notable people have left their mark on the city
Such as president Bill Clinton, who has his presidential library here.
For being a medium sized city, it has a lot
to offer.
If you go to President Clinton Avenue between
Main Street and I-30 you will find the River Market district.
It’s a busy place, with people, sounds, smells and things to see all bouncing around
the street.
It’s a high energy place, and full of entertainment options.
I don’t know what to say other than I love this park.
The park is full of beautiful greenery and reminders of the city’s past.
Most cities have a riverfront park, assuming they have a river,
but they are usually pretty sketchy.
I enjoyed walking through this one.
Sometimes I like to take a step back to get some perspective on things.
The old Junction Bridge in the park offers a great opportunity for just that.
The bridge was originally built in 1884, then rebuilt in 1970, and finally given its current
form of pedestrian bridge in 2008.
It was pretty quiet up there when I visited, just the sound of the wind and
the boats passing beneath.
You get a nice view of downtown and the river up here.
You can’t visit Little Rock without being reminded that Bill Clinton was
President of the United States.
He has built an amazing presidential library and museum just up the street
from the River Market District.
Like the yellow brick road, just fallow President Clinton Avenue and it will take you
right to the wizard himself.
Along the way there is an incredibly sculpted park.
Some world leaders build up monuments to their power, whatever your views of old
Bill, it’s nice that he went for a park instead.
The presidential library has a lot of memorabilia from his time in the White House.
There is even an exact replica of the Oval Office as it was when he was president.
You can even sit in the chair behind the desk and get a photo.
Before becoming president, Bill Clinton was the governor of the state, and worked here
In the Capitol Building.
The capitol grounds are full of monuments to heroes living and lost.
As I have traveled I have been amazed at just how much each state has
to be proud of.
America is a land of great challenges, and great achievements
In the face of those challenges.
Arkansas is called the natural state, and
I can’t think of a better place to see that
Nature then the Big Dam Bridge.
As the
name suggests, it goes over a bridge, a big dam bridge dam,
so be ready for lots of walking.
Don’t be put off by the length of the walk, it is well worth it for the views over the
bridge.
The old mill is not as old as you may have been led to believe.
This mill is famous for being in the film adaptation of “Gone With the Wind”.
In the film it is supposedly in the Atlanta of civil war times.
In reality it is in Little Rock, and was only six years old when the film was made.
Regardless, it is a beautiful spot to stop and have a walk through the garden.
Who knows, you might be inspired to do great things with this scenery.
Little Rock is very surprising.
I came into the city with low expectations
Either way it exceeded them.
I hope you enjoyed the visit to Little Rock Arkansas.
