Welcome to this new French lesson for level CE6.
Today, we will discover together the generic words and the specific words.
These notions will allow us to better understand how the words can be grouped and used in a precise way.
Then, we will correct the exercises of the activity booklet, pages 8, 1, 2 and 3.
The title of this lesson, generic terms, is particular.
Let's start by understanding what these terms mean.
Generic term means chief word.
Particular term means specific word.
What is a generic term or a generic word?
A generic word is a word that designates a set of things or elements with common characteristics.
For example, the word fruit is a generic word.
The apple, the banana, the strawberry are specific or particular words that are part of the word fruit.
Let's see together another example.
The word animal is a generic word.
On the other hand, the word cat, dog and bird are specific or particular words.
Both answers are correct.
What is a particular term?
A particular word or a particular term that designates a specific element in a larger set.
For example, among the fruits, an apple.
So, this apple is a specific word.
It allows us to know exactly which fruit we are talking about.
Here we have three generic terms, but apple is a specific term.
On the other hand, a particular word designates a specific element within a group.
Why use specific or particular words?
Using specific words is important to be clear and precise in our communication.
Imagine if I say animal, but I'm actually talking about a cat.
It is better to use the specific word to avoid any confusion.
Bravo!
Now we will correct together the exercises on pages 8 of files 1, 2 and 3.
Exercise number 1
In this text, what is the generic term and the specific words that correspond to it?
Here we ask you to look for the generic word and the specific words.
I read the text.
Craftsmanship is an interesting economic sector, but few young people want to start manual trades nowadays.
However, we still need good painters, electricians, mechanics, etc.
In France, sometimes you have to wait several days before finding a plumber who can come to your house.
The generic term here is the word manual trades.
Manual trades are trades that involve physical activity or the use of hands and body.
On the other hand, there are intellectual trades that require the use of thought, analysis and creativity.
Specific words
Painter
Painter, electrician, mechanic, plumber
