Mary Barra On Being The First Woman CEO Of General Motors & The Pressure Put On Women | TIME
Nov 17, 2025 #Marybarra
People have this perception of the auto industry that it's a very old traditional
organization but really 20 years ago there were leaders encouraging women to take exciting
positions and that's why I've never felt you know that there was a glass ceiling.
My father had almost a 40-year career at General Motors. He was a dye maker and so he encouraged
me to pursue my love of math. Someone's career especially when you're starting off it's this
you know base of a tree and there's so many different choices you can make but especially
early in your career don't saw off whole parts of the tree because you never know what you're
going to enjoy doing and what opportunities you may have. I think what happens sometimes
is women put too much pressure on themselves so what I try to encourage especially young
women is don't step off step over because that's life.
