General Motors CEO Mary Barra discusses Elevating Women
Nov 27, 2025 #Marybarra
Were the mentors and the people who were so instrumental in helping you progress through your career?
Were they men women a mix? It was a mixture. It was a mixture. I mean clearly, you know, I started in 1980
So as I started my co-op being at General Motors Institute, so there were many men who were mentors
But also I would say women in in various different parts of the corporation that had it
You know made it part of their role to mentor women and and to and to mentor men and women for that matter
But so I think that's something that has been very strong at the company for a long period of time and we have formal mentoring
Programs as well as you know, there's also I say sponsorship of when you do a great job for someone
They're willing to say hey, let's put this person in this role because they've done a great job here
So I think you've earned some of that in your career as well. Okay, so
Were there ever moments where you felt like?
Because of your gender you were you were not being given the same opportunities
Or that that people were not treating you with the same level of respect that that they might give to a man
You know, I would say of course there there was times it was a benefit
There was times where maybe it was a detriment, but I think overall it balances out and I think that's an issue
That's not an issue for women or you know, any diversity group. That's just life
I mean there's times where you know, you're what you bring forward is going to be viewed more positively and there's times where it's not
