A lot has happened in 20 years of the Jonas Brothers, but how much of what you’ve heard is true? From how the band got started to how some of their most iconic moments came to be (remember Joe’s rendition of ‘Single Ladies?’), Nick, Joe and Kevin are here to set the record straight.
The brothers recall some of their most memorable performances, including one at the White House, reminisce about their earliest crushes, and reveal what they deem to be the quintessential Jonas Brothers album.
Nick ran with the Bulls in Spain when he was 15.
Based on IMDB.
That's a fact on IMDB.
Really?
Yeah.
Yeah, these are facts.
How was that for you?
Yeah, was it cool?
Uh, it was great.
Yeah.
I really showed those Bulls what's up.
I ran with passion.
Pasión.
¿Cómo se dice?
False.
Hey, Entertainment Weekly.
We are the Jonas Brothers.
And today, we are fact-checking the internet.
Let's get into it.
And away we go.
In 2010, the brothers took part in a concert at the White House and covered
Drive My Car by the Beatles.
As a personal request from Paul McCartney.
This is a fact, yeah.
It's a fact.
It's a cool thing to read.
It wasn't a request from Paul McCartney.
It was a request from President Barack Obama.
No, incorrect.
I have the letter from Paul in my house.
No, it's from Paul McCartney.
He asked us to be a part of his...
What exactly was it that he was being honored?
It was the Lincoln Library.
His work was being honored.
Correct.
So there was a celebration in the East Wing, which we took part in.
It was us, Jack White, Stevie Wonder.
I was Costello.
I was Costello, Dave Grohl, among others.
It was an epic night.
It was awesome.
We were all in this shuttle bus going from, obviously, the most secure building in the country,
the White House, to our hotel.
And it's sort of one of the only scenarios where, like, all of these, I would say,
A-list artists and performers would kind of be, like, in a bus together.
I believe it was Jack White.
It was.
Started singing a song by the Beatles that we all sang along to.
And it was one of the coolest moments of my career.
Well, it was Yellow Submarine, which is technically a Ringo song,
but still, the Beatles and, you know, Paul is in that band, obviously,
so it was a nice moment.
The Jonas Brothers became the second group in history to have a song debut at number one
after Aerosmith's I Don't Want to Miss a Thing.
This is not true.
This is incorrect.
This is false.
But again, there are things that are true about it.
This is feeling like politics.
We are one of only, I think, seven or eight groups or bands
to ever have a Hot 100 number one debut.
And Aerosmith is one of those.
We were the last one since Aerosmith.
Since Aerosmith.
That's the actual thing.
Boyz II Men have, like, I don't know, three or four.
Have you ever heard of the Beatles?
I think that Shaped My Heart by the Backstreet Boys
is one of the best ballads ever written.
Kissed by a Rose.
Seal.
I'm not even warm yet.
Click away.
Kevin appeared on People's Sexiest Man Alive list in 2008 at the age of 21.
Scandalous.
Is this true?
It is true.
He was very excited about this photo shoot.
How could you not be?
He was, like, what were you?
He was, like, long jacket on.
He was, like, do this.
There was a car involved, wasn't there?
There was a car.
There was a Mustang.
That was a pretty exciting thing to get called to be a part of.
But it was actually because there was a bunch of people
that were all turning 21 that year.
Don't take it easy.
You did that ----, bro.
Me and Zach got front.
Take the win.
Kevin, hit that button.
Oh, we got a video.
Love Bug was on that album, and that's my favorite song I've ever written
and probably ever will.
I don't know.
It's one of my favorites.
OK, Nick.
My question is, do you still feel that way?
Because after this interview, you went to go write your new solo album
that you're going to be releasing in the future.
Of Jonas Brothers songs, I think, yeah,
Love Bug feels like an important composition.
I'd say that's very true.
But of my solo stuff, I'm really excited about the new album,
as you know.
And I think it's some of my most truthful and vulnerable
and soulful works yet.
If we had to pick the quintessential Jonas Brothers albums,
three of them, what would they be, Kev?
Jonas Brothers self-titled, the album,
and I think Greens from Your Hometown.
Nice.
OK, I'm going to go with the album, self-titled,
and I think Greetings from Your Hometown
because I feel like it's a good marriage of what we've done
and where we're at now.
You guys are missing a big one here.
I'm surprised you didn't say it, but I'm going to go self-titled,
Happiness Begins.
Oh, Happiness Begins.
He's got a lot of albums.
And Greetings from Your Hometown.
After Joe Jonas was in Camp Rock,
Disney decided to also add Nick and Kevin as a vehicle
to hard launch the band.
Kind of.
It's like half true.
Joe got the role of Shane Gray in Camp Rock
as our band was already doing its thing for a couple years.
We were on tour.
We were on the theme park circuit,
which is basically you go to these outdoor amphitheaters
at Six Flags or Wonder Park,
wherever we could basically get booked
and put on a free show.
But things were starting to work,
and Year 3000 was starting to bubble,
and we felt like we had some momentum,
but we needed something to propel us.
And so Joe gets this call to audition for this Disney movie.
I recall us helping him do his self-tape audition in our hotel room.
I wish we could find this footage.
Like a Holiday Inn in Albuquerque or something.
I know Disney has it somewhere.
In their vaults.
But we used this thing called a flip vid.
So my millennial folks out there,
you might know what it is,
but it was like the first gen of like a camera
that had a USB connect,
and you could upload videos.
You hit a button.
So we did that, but it looked terrible.
I literally held a lamp like this,
pointed at him like a spotlight.
It was awful.
So the Disney execs called our dad,
who was one of our managers at the time,
and were like, is this a joke?
Like, this is the worst looking video we've ever seen.
Not his audition, but the quality of the video.
We got a better tape, and he got the job.
We shot it on a Razer phone.
No, I'm just kidding.
Our dad was the one that was like,
well, it's really important that we keep this kind of unit together,
and that this band has a shot to really do its thing.
So if you're taking Joe, you've got to add Nick and Kevin.
So they created this Connect 3 band,
and the rest, as they say, is Camp Rock.
Thanks, senior.
We rock!
Guys, come on out.
One thing they don't tell you when you sign up for film and TV
is that you sit around a lot.
For us, we don't really like to sit around very much,
so we would go write a ton of songs.
We'd go to the studio after set.
We made the full album.
I think every Camp Rock we were making music,
including the third one.
But the first one, we actually recorded Burning Up in Toronto,
basically while we were shooting the movie.
A Little Bit Longer, Pushing Me Away, Be Be Good,
all in the course of the first week of shooting.
Then we completed the rest of that album,
A Little Bit Longer album, while we were up there.
But pretty wild to think that that song was recorded in Toronto while we were shooting.
Yeah. Wild.
Love Toronto.
The Jonas Brothers kicked off their hometown tour at MetLife Stadium,
but Kevin is the only Jonas Brother that was actually born in New Jersey.
Franklin Jonas, technically not a Jonas Brother, but he is a Jonas Brother,
was born in New Jersey.
So I would say false.
And this is from Factinate.
So there, get your facts right, Factinate.
You're wrong.
More like fact-a-not.
Fact-a-false.
And that is why you write the lyrics.
No.
Fact-a-false. Fact-a-false is good, too.
Okay, thank you.
It's not as good.
What was it like being born?
In New Jersey?
No.
In general.
In general?
Follow-up.
It was eye-opening.
Is there something distinctly New Jersey about you guys or me?
Yeah.
He doesn't know how to pump his own gas.
That is also false.
It's true.
But I just get to not in New Jersey.
Get to not.
I'm a sucker for a bagel sandwich.
I could have just had breakfast, and if I smell a delicious egg-toasted bagel
with bacon, egg, and cheese, I'm going to be in that thing.
I would say something that makes me sort of distinctly from New Jersey
would be my love for bowling alleys and diners.
Got a lot of those.
Places where, like, it would make sense that someone's still smoking inside.
Like, I feel right at home.
They still do it in Jersey, right?
Yes, they do.
The Jonas Brothers' original band name was J3.
At one time it was.
That's kind of a fact.
It was a potential name.
I think it's a fact.
Well, the story goes.
There is merch.
Yeah, there is merch, J3, because before our first concert ever,
we were playing at a church gymnasium.
As you do.
We invited all our friends and family, including the local cheerleading team
or squad or something.
Dance troupe.
And we made merchandise up.
The label was all about J3.
They thought that was really hit-ish.
And we looked at each other, and I believe I said,
do we really want to be called J3 for the rest of our lives?
So we went on stage and said, hi guys, we're the Jonas Brothers.
And that's how it began.
You were so rebellious.
Bad boy.
And the label guy in the back was not thrilled.
But he understood, because technically it's true.
Joe was a certified babysitter, but only in the state of New Jersey.
That is a fact.
And I don't know why I said it was.
Kevin too, right?
Yes, it was.
I guess technically I need to...
You have to recertify.
Definitely.
My daughter just did it, actually.
Really?
Yeah, she did.
What does she need to recertify?
Every two years.
Oh.
And then CPR trainings every...
Every year.
Yeah, that's good.
We only did it because we had crushes on the sisters.
Yeah.
And they were going, so it was a good way for us to spend an entire day with them.
And we weren't technically old enough to go on dates,
so it was like a pre-date.
It was a school date.
It's like every Hallmark movie.
I'm going to go learn how to be a babysitter,
so that way I can actually flirt with a girl that I like.
I was never a certified babysitter.
We had a family friend who owned a New Jersey deli.
That's right.
They would let me come and stock the shelves, sweep the floors,
and they would give me a couple dollars at the end of the thing.
That's a job.
When I think about it now,
they were definitely breaking child labor laws and some other stuff.
I was doing basically free labor, and they were giving me two or three bucks.
But it was a good experience.
And by the way, it's always been a dream of mine to open a deli.
What would you call it?
I'm torn between Big Nick's.
Big Nick's Italian Jersey deli?
It's good.
Just Big Nick's.
And then St. Nick's.
But it feels very Christmassy, and it's obviously not a Christmas deli.
No, St. Nick's is pretty special.
But I like Big Nick's.
I'm all about St. Nick's.
I see the merch.
You see the merch.
I do too.
All right, we're going to go with St. Nick's.
And everything says holy in front of it.
Like holy cow is some sort of beef sandwich.
Sirloin sandwich.
He does make an exceptional sandwich.
Holy meatball.
You could do it.
It doesn't matter.
Yeah, it's all like religious themed.
Hit it.
Here we go.
Fans voted for Joe to post a video dancing to Single Ladies by Beyonce,
Leotard, and all as punishment for losing a bet.
It's true.
It wasn't?
No.
It wasn't fans.
You guys.
I lost a bet to you guys.
But the fans voted after we did the video.
I forget.
For what you would be doing.
I was told by a label head that this would be the worst idea.
He said it would ruin your career.
It would ruin our career.
Check the numbers on that video, sir.
Joe, you have to do this for the fans.
You said you would do it.
You have to do it.
I know.
It's just.
You have no choice.
You have to do it, Joe.
You have to do it.
Guys, are you sure?
Yes.
It was something that we kind of just did for fun.
We were just being ridiculous.
And fans seemed to really enjoy it and thought it was silly.
It was the first time I ever saw the video.
So I watched the video and then tried to mimic the icon of Beyonce's dancing.
And I obviously could not keep up.
I think it's probably a zero on a zero out of ten.
Luckily, I think it's all in fun.
You look great.
Thanks, guys.
You're welcome.
Nick is the Jonas Brother who has sung the most Christmas songs in a lifetime.
That's from Tinder.
Is it?
What is that?
I don't know.
The fire.
It's giving to Tinder.
I think this is true, actually.
My first song I ever recorded and the song that got me signed was a Christmas song.
It's called Joy to the World, A Christmas Prayer.
I haven't heard it.
I have a solo song duet with Shania Twain.
What?
That's a Christmas song?
It's called Say All I Want for Christmas.
When did that come out?
Fact check that.
That's false.
It's true.
It's a duet with Shania Twain.
Where the hell was I?
Yeah.
What happened?
And then I have another solo Christmas song.
Jimmy Falun's.
That's us.
We have like five or six.
We have like ten.
We have Disney.
That's incorrect.
We have a lot more now because as the Jonas Brothers, we just came out with a Christmas album with our Christmas movie.
A Very Jonas Christmas on Disney Plus and Hulu Now.
Stream it now.
Nothing works.
Guys, I've got this.
I know Glenn Powell from Top Gun.
What we're most excited about is that this movie doesn't suck.
It's always a good thing.
That is true.
At the premiere, there's multiple people that came up to me and I know the difference.
Let me show you what it's like when we do a scene together.
Let me do the scene.
What it's like when your movie is trash, kid.
Okay.
Hey.
How do you feel?
Oh, great.
I mean, the reception was amazing in the room.
Feeling good about it.
So, what else are you guys up to?
Where's the next stop on the tour?
So, that's exactly what it would be like.
Now do the other one.
Movie's trash.
Okay, ready?
Dude, this movie's actually very fun.
Like, it's very funny.
We heard the words.
You guys were hilarious.
Hey, it's actually funny.
A lot.
Okay.
Yeah.
Scene.
Thank you so much.
This has been Fact Checking with the Jonas Brothers here and I'd say it's like nine out of ten.
Other than you running with the bulls, I think we're pretty close.
Yeah, we're pretty close.
Yeah.
Thank you, Tinder, for sending in your questions.
