Join me as I build a habitat for my dwarf snakehead, Channa bleheri, one of the smallest of its genus. Along the way, we'll experiment with some new techniques that give it a very interesting touch, and at the end, you'll see it in action, unleashing its predatory instincts.
95 x 30 x 40, 6mm glass with aluminum frames, regular glass Plants: Ferns Java Anubias Barteri Var. Nana Hydrocotyle verticillata Cryptocoryne parva #aquarium#aquascape#diy
This is a small snakehead fish, and today we are going to build its habitat.
Temporarily I had two of them in this aquarium,
divided by a grid, since they are very aggressive and territorial,
but it is time to start a new project for one of them.
So we start by giving a good clean to the aquarium,
removing the algae that is embedded in the glass walls,
that is very clean.
We are draining all the water along with the garbage
and now the aquarium is ready to start this new assembly.
And now we go with the sand part.
What are we going to use? Silica 2030.
It looks natural, it does not compact and it is also easy to maintain.
We are going to use about 15 kg and we are adding it little by little.
Then we lower with this spatula so that everything is well aligned and even.
See there that the water looks a bit cloudy,
and that I rinsed it very well, but well,
when I fill the aquarium completely it will look much better.
Look, in this part I have different rocks and some roots.
I think for this type of fish it is better to use smooth rocks.
So we are going to have to go outside to choose them,
but first it is important to select the roots that are on this side.
Just look at the amount of roots we have here.
They are under Luciana's fish tank
and they are here temporarily where I find a space.
All these are the ones I will use in the next assemblies,
that's why there are so many.
It must be considered that this type of fish,
snakeheads, like to create burrows,
so you have to consider a space so that they can build it.
But here we are going to help them by selecting a piece
that brings a kind of cave or something like that.
This one seems ideal to me.
It also fits perfectly in the aquarium.
Let me dry the glass quickly,
and now let's proceed to insert the root.
Look how good it looks.
Just right and with its respective cave,
where we hope our fish can feel comfortable.
Here I tried to put another root on top to see if we completed something,
but it doesn't need it, so with this one it looks very good.
Let's go with the next decorative element, the rocks.
I'm also going to use river ones because they are inert and smooth,
so that our little predator doesn't get hurt
while it tries to dig or something like that.
Here in my yard I have a collection that I bought a long time ago
precisely for the next assemblies, so now is when.
I'm going to select different sizes so that it looks natural,
and now it's just a matter of arranging them,
but obviously giving them a good rinse beforehand.
I raise the trunk by placing it on top of two large stones
so that the little cave is a little higher.
Also, this is going to float since it has never been submerged,
so I put a larger rock on top so that it doesn't float
and also integrates the whole structure.
And so it was, with the little house of our chana.
Let's hope it gets in there and doesn't want to scratch another area.
Now it's time to start filling,
to later place the plants.
See that the water has already cleared,
and now we can plant to see what we are doing.
And why do I tell you what plants they are, if you know them very well.
I don't know why these in particular like this type of fish a lot,
I suppose that by creating shadow areas
they make them feel safer and more comfortable.
We place them in different points of the aquarium
and I will also add these ferns that go between the rocks.
And as a final touch, and to give it more detail,
river rock, but small.
This integrates our little ecosystem even more
and makes it look natural.
We are going to take a little break
because I want to show you how the fish room looks
when we do the assemblies.
It's a disaster.
The worst part is cleaning all this.
And look, so you can see that we do throw some gravel,
also so that the reflections are not seen,
I put this tape on the window sill,
this so that the light lines that enter through that part are not seen.
I know this may seem insignificant,
but they are details that make the difference.
I don't like to see the reflections.
Well, later maybe you can see something,
but I tried not to.
We continue with our assembly
and now I'm going to place this filter.
It's from the interiors, I don't love them,
but it's temporary since I still haven't gotten the canister
I asked for for this assembly.
So it will work fine for now.
Inside this filter there is a sponge,
just like the sponge filters,
which already have bacteria inside.
And this will allow me to enter the channel today or tomorrow,
depending on how the aquarium looks.
If it's very cloudy, we'll wait.
By the way, the lamp I used here is a WIC Aqua Z250 Pro
and it's a recent model.
And that said, the water ended up getting cloudy.
Needless to say, we have to wait until tomorrow,
we turn off the lights,
and we'll see how the aquarium dawns the next day.
And it's already the next day.
But what do you think?
The assembly didn't convince me.
Mainly because I feel that it's too high for these fish
and the size they have.
They have to be going up to the surface to breathe,
and it seems to me that it will be too high,
so we have to do it differently.
We take out all the plants again
to be able to lower the water level to half,
and we also have to lower the filter.
Look, here I happened to leave a part of the trunk
with the rock emerged,
to make an attempt of a waterfall that falls from that part,
since the head of power has two outputs,
and in one I connected a hose that points to this part.
The truth is that this was not planned,
but it seems to me an interesting and different touch.
So I had to accommodate the plants again,
but this time without balisneria.
I also placed this new plant that works very well
to have it emerged,
and it also looks pretty, it gives a natural touch to the aquarium.
I also put some anubias between the rock and the root,
I added some cryptocorynes at the bottom,
and the ferns that were already there.
And this is how our assembly turned out,
it is something different,
although the truth is that I did not have it planned like this.
But I liked it a lot,
also the attempt of the waterfall I feel that it was beautiful,
although it is very subtle, it looks good.
It looks quite natural,
and it is also more suitable for the size of our little chana.
Up to the top I also put several telephones
that I feel fit well,
and help separate the submerged and emerged part.
There is a good amount of vegetation,
which will make the fish feel comfortable
and take out its best colors.
So the moment of truth has come,
we are going to enter our fish,
what we are all waiting for.
We acclimatize and now it goes inside.
Immediately he got into the cave that we made for him,
which is already good.
He is going to start exploring his environment.
Maybe it takes a while to get used to it,
since lately he has spent a lot of time in aquariums
without any decoration.
A few hours have passed
and look how beautiful it looks.
Now yes, he already took out the coloration.
We are going to offer him some food,
if he already eats it is that he is comfortable,
or at least he is calmer.
So let's proceed to throw an insect,
let's see how he reacts.
With this it is confirmed,
our chana is already more comfortable
in its new habitat.
It is worth mentioning that this is one of the
smallest snake heads
that we can get.
The scientific name is chana bleheri
or also known as rainbow snake head.
And they usually stay between 14 and 16 cm.
So compared to the dragon
that we have in the 650 liter aquarium,
this is quite small.
The care is the same as all the others.
Remember,
and it is super important
to put lids on the aquarium,
because it seems that they bring
integrated turbo that allows them to jump
with a lot of force.
So they can easily get out of the aquarium.
Although normally they only seek to escape
when they do not feel comfortable.
So if your chanas are constantly
looking to jump,
it is because there is something wrong
in the aquarium,
maybe they are not quite comfortable.
The next day the water was painted
a little yellow by the tannins
that released the trunk,
but to a certain extent it does not look bad,
it gives it a more natural touch,
although I will try to keep it that way,
because then if it is painted too much,
the fish do not look good.
I personally am not a fan of aquariums
of this type with yellow water,
that is, black water.
I offered him another insect that he grabbed
without any problem.
This chanita is already on the other side.
I don't know what it's going to be called,
but until we don't know if it's male or female,
we can't name it.
Because for example,
we put Nagini on the pulchra and what do you think?
It turned out to be a male.
Remember that all my chanitas
are going to have a name,
no one escapes,
so sooner or later we are going to baptize it.
By the way, I leave you in the description
a store where you can buy very beautiful chanas
and ship them all over Mexico.
Soon a very large order will arrive
with different species.
So I hope you liked this video.
It was something a little different
from what we normally do,
although of course,
for this type of spaces
where there is a part in emergido,
the ideal is that the aquarium was rimless
so that it looks better,
but since it must have covers
and it was not planned,
it had to be like that.
In the description of this video
you will find all the details of the aquarium,
measurements, thickness, used materials
and shopping links.
And very soon there will be available lamps
like the ones I used in this assembly,
so you can already put them aside.
Remember that I give a 3-month warranty
against any factory defect.
They arrive in 2 days and you can pay with card.
In addition, they already include their shades
in all models.
In the highlights of my Instagram stories
you can check the prices and availability.
So nothing,
we are going to leave the video here.
Thank you very much to all who stayed until the end.
Receive a big hug from me
and see you until the next video.
