Opening day at Whistler Blackcomb was, well, should I say, left a lot to be desired.
But I let the mountain breathe for a few days, I let a few small storms come in over the
weekend and I'm back checking it out today.
Oh, it's so good, dude!
Honestly, you could probably just ski it off.
Parking lot, wax street.
That'll do, donkey.
See you later, bud.
That was not great.
The beer is.
Oh, good.
Dude, we got another chair.
New chair, who dis?
This might be a great idea or the worst possible idea.
And we'll find out in like two seconds.
There definitely could be more snow, you know.
Everyone, this is Mark and I's first time on the resort together.
He doesn't wear goggles, he raw dogs.
We're in the trees, you can see.
That's not the power we're looking for, is it?
Crunchy down here.
What we expected.
It's what we expected.
Sketchy, icy snow, hard on the body.
What's not to love?
All right, let's get out of here.
Early season conditions persist.
Lost spider mark, man.
Lost spider mark?
I don't know, dude.
Enjoy your lap, boys.
Uphill Travel's open and it's absolutely gorgeous.
Whistler's also looking incredible.
I've heard a word Harmony might open pretty early this season.
Looks good, dude.
It's gonna be frickin' sick.
I hope the snow's okay.
Oh, yeah, dude.
Oh, my God.
Yeah.
Those look like sharks to me.
This is so sick.
Oh, real snow, dude.
Oh, my God.
That storm was sick.
Holy ----, dude.
No way.
How did I wind up under the chair?
Yeah, dude.
Real skiing.
Man, does that feel nice.
Real snow.
Now it's getting shallow.
Oh, my God.
That is awesome.
Yeah, buddy.
That'll take it easy in this ---- here.
Oh, jeez.
Uh-oh.
This might have been an oopsie.
Damn it, James.
I should have skinned up.
This is like an hour walk down if I mess this up.
I guess since we're gonna be walking for four kilometers,
it's a good time to chat about the sponsor of today's video,
Insta360.
Insta360s are my ultimate tool for all ski filming.
The X5 is their newest 360 camera model,
and I'm absolutely in love with it.
On days like today where the light is low,
it's got an updated 1 over 1.28-inch sensor and a AAAI chip.
So on days like this, like skiing down 7th there,
it looks super crisp even though the light's low,
and that makes a huge difference for me as a ski filmer.
I also love the battery life on this thing.
It's improved and lasts for ages when you film in 5.7K,
30 frames per second like I do.
It's an awesome tool.
It's hands-free,
and you can keep skiing and worry about reframing later.
All of the shots in this video will be taken with the Insta360 X5
and the Insta360 Ace Pro 2,
which is on my pole here.
So between these two cameras,
it's a deadly combo,
and it's all I use for ski filming all season long.
If you want to learn more about the Insta360 X5,
I've got a full review video on it,
my long-term review,
my honest thoughts,
and I'll link it right here.
Insta360's also running a Black Friday sale right now.
The deal's sick.
If you use code RISE,
you can get 15% off the X5,
and they'll include a couple goodies,
a carry case,
a snow kit,
and a one-year cloud subscription.
So it's a sweet time to cop an Insta360
when they're doing their biggest sale of the year.
No, this isn't enough to safely ski,
I don't think.
I made the mistake.
I made the mistake of...
Yup, good thing I brought the pow skis for this.
Nope.
It's not a go.
We are walking till the end of time.
There's not even a bit of snow on here.
Worth it for sure, but
this is a no-go.
Oh, God, James.
Classic.
Classic move.
It ain't a start
to the Whistler season
without some dumbassery like this.
I've done this
for too long,
and I knew
there wasn't gonna be that much snow.
I'm a glass-half-full
kinda guy,
and I never knew
this cat track
is so darn steep.
Gosh dang.
Oh, my.
This is becoming a cardio day.
So freakin' thirsty, man.
So dehydrated.
Don't have any water,
but
I think there's some H2O and Liquid Courage.
Cheers.
Oh, yeah.
Super refreshing.
Just what the body needs.
Trust me.
Forget, you know,
electrolyte powders,
all those things.
A little bit of Liquid Courage
brings those electrolytes right down
where you want them.
Get your dehydration
peaking.
The idiot
has arrived.
How are you, dude?
This is a ---- show, eh?
Spider Mark,
to what do I owe this pleasure?
Well, you know,
I thought a little fresh
pow champagne day.
Sounds delicious.
Yes, yes.
Let's go eat some champagne, Mark.
He's to the sky.
I am going to take Mark
on that beautiful exit
that I enjoyed so thoroughly.
Mark said he would like
the worst possible ski out.
So I'm going to make it even worse
this time.
Great.
I mean, we can't call it
a ski out even, can we?
We have seen almost a thousand birds.
Look at this.
Oh, my God.
Someone pulled a granola bar
out down on Gatskinner.
All right, Spider Mark.
Go this way.
Watch that first rock.
Oh, yeah, dude.
Yeah, buddy.
Sick.
Oh, ----.
Pillows.
Yeah.
No way.
Oh, it's so good, dude.
Yeah.
I wonder where Mark wound up.
Mark.
Yeah, buddy.
I like these pockets through here.
It's going to open a little bit,
but it's quite a little shrubby.
The snow stays pretty good
till the bottom of seventh,
but oh, yeah, dude.
This is going to be a blaster
right on this edge, dude.
Oh, yeah.
Yeah, buddy.
Oh.
So good, dude.
So good.
Watch the big sharks.
Yeah.
Those are big rocks.
I know these are rocks.
Wow.
That's amazing.
Oh, yeah.
Pretty dreamy little field in here.
Amazing.
It's just sharky.
Time to take little pauses.
You all right?
Such a stark difference
between the snow on the resort
and the snow
in seventh right now.
A PBJ on the go.
Nothing passes time
while you're hiking.
Just bite and breathe.
Yeah, boys.
You still want to stick to plan A?
I think we'll have fun in here.
There's one.
There's two.
You getting sharked up?
Find some vegetation.
Yeah.
Yeah, buddy.
I can see some sharkies.
Yeah.
Freaking blower, dude.
I can't see.
This should be great.
And no one's even been in here, dude.
Sick, dude.
Well, dude, great seeing you again.
Yeah, you too, man.
Yeah, you take care.
You probably,
if you keep traversing,
you'll get out of here.
All right, brother.
Godspeed.
Oh, yeah.
Oh, this feels so good.
Oh, dude.
Worth it.
It's always worth the extra push.
I could have skied out,
but I have no regrets.
I could do that
all day, every day.
Nice little skinning lap.
I guess that's, you know,
pretty much the backcountry
is what we're doing here.
We've got to be on the Catskinner chair
by 3 p.m.,
and it is
2.43 p.m.,
and I'm still walking.
Let's get our butts to Catskinner.
Well,
just as Whistler often does,
that blew my expectations
completely
out of the water.
What a day.
What a freaking day.
Some real pow skiing.
That's the first real snow
I felt all season,
you know.
I've been skiing a lot of snow,
but it's been a varying
consistencies and depths,
shallow depths.
So, like, having some
reasonably deep
light snow
felt good.
I felt like I could actually
ski again, kind of.
So, pretty stoked about that.
Also stoked
that the snow is falling
here in the parking lot.
We need snow low.
We need snow low
real bad.
Since I'm
frolicking around
on gravel again,
I just wanted to thank
Insta360 for sponsoring
this video.
Believe it or not,
my Ace Pro died.
So, I put one new
battery in,
but look at this.
22% left
on the X5
and I filmed with it
all day.
Legitimately,
such a good battery.
If you want to take
advantage of that
Black Friday sale,
it's still on
for a limited time
from now till December 4th.
Use code RISE
for 15% off
the X5
and you'll get
some free goodies
on the carry case.
I'm forgetting
what you're gonna get.
A carry case.
They're gonna hate
this ad read.
A carry case,
cloud subscription,
and a snow kit.
If you use code RISE.
Oh, man.
No matter how many times
you try and
do this brand thing,
it doesn't work.
But the good news,
Insta360 is a sick camera
and take advantage
of the Black Friday deal.
If you are looking
to get one,
sayonara, folks.
We're gonna go hunt
some more pow.
Stay spicy.
