In this video I will be taking you on a tour around The Barbican Centre, one of London’s most iconic creative and cultural hubs.
It is part of the Barbican estate, a residential and commercial complex.
Completed in 1982, the Barbican is a prime example of Brutalist architecture. It was designed by the British architecture firm Chamberlin, Powell and Bon and is characterised by its monumental textured concrete structures.
We will also pop into the Art Gallery to see Alice Neel's Off The Griddle exhibition.
Today we'll be visiting one of London's most iconic creative and cultural hubs,
the Barbican Centre. It is part of the Barbican Estate, a residential and commercial complex
that is almost like a little city within the city and is connected by elevated walkways.
It has a multi-level layout with different entrances which can be confusing at times.
Completed in 1982, the Barbican is a prime example of Brutalist architecture.
It was designed by the British architecture firm Chamberlain Parallel Bomb and is characterised
by its monumental textured concrete structures. There are various types of apartments on the
estate designed to cater for different needs, also partly with the idea that its residents
could move from flat to flat as they climbed the economic ladder. Today the site is great
and its residents are mostly in the upper middle class.
Here we are overlooking the lakeside terrace of the Barbican Centre.
This is where you will find a wide range of creative and cultural institutions such as
music and theatre halls, the music and drama school, art galleries, restaurants, cafes,
a cinema, library and a conservatory. I'll be taking you around the different walkways
columns and is contrasted by utopian hanging plants and peaceful water gardens.
