Life is a big ol’ mix of highs and lows, wins and losses. And sometimes we’re hit with a really tough day—or a whole bunch of them. After all, adversity happens and stress doesn’t keep a schedule.
On those days, it’s not so easy to be nice to ourselves. It’s different for everyone, but I know that when my anxiety and fear take over, negative self-talk kicks into high gear.
Negative self-talk can hurt your heart AND your health. That’s why I wanted to share this strategy with you today. It’s simple and it really works—you can use it any time the mental meanies try to rain on your parade.

When I was a kid, my mom used to give me and my sister manners classes.
We'd sit at the dinner table and she'd teach us how not to eat like wild animals.
We also learned how to put our napkins on our laps and use our silverware properly.
Apparently, they're not weapons. Who knew?
I didn't like manners class at the time, but looking back, I'm glad I learned from my classy
mother. She also taught us how to be polite and not talk back to grown-ups, which at the time
was easy for me because I was a shy, quiet kid.
But then the hormones kicked in, and that's when I discovered my new mantra.
You're not the boss of me.
My mother was not pleased.
Fast forward to a few days ago.
There I was, freaking out and being mean to myself.
You know, the you're not good enough, smart enough, strong enough crap.
And no matter how hard I tried to break the trance, my tools weren't working.
I tried breathwork, meditation, prayer, you name it.
Nada.
Which freaked me out further.
And then I heard my old, familiar teenage voice and realized that maybe she was on to something.
So I unleashed her on my negativity and she said something like this.
Oh yeah?
Mean thought?
You're not the boss of me.
I don't have to listen to you because you're full of poop.
You know what's real?
Love.
Even though you're hurting, you don't need to hurt me to get attention.
So tell me what's really going on and then let's chill at the mall or something.
I mean, isn't she a smart and sassy gal?
Now here's why this is important.
If you're a wellness warrior like me, you spend a lot of time cooking healthy food,
trying to get a good night's sleep, exercising, and practicing self-care.
You do your best to make your wellness routine a regular part of your lifestyle.
Well, guess what?
Chronic stress, which is what being nasty to yourself on the regular creates,
lowers your immune system, dials up inflammation, and messes with your mojo.
But it actually gets worse.
Excess stress can cancel out the benefits of healthy living.
What a waste of time, energy, and money.
So the next time you're having a tough time breaking out of the negativity,
the meditation isn't working, and the mental meanies are taking over,
let your inner teenager talk back.
If she's anything like mine, you'll be back on track in no time,
or you'll at least get a good chuckle.
So now it's your turn.
Do you ever get stuck in panic, anxiety, or negativity?
