Hi, my name is Alicia Brown and today I will be performing
Emily's goodbye monologue from Our Town.
I can't bear it. They're so young and beautiful.
Why did they ever have to get old? Mama, mama, I'm here. I'm grown up. I love you
all everything. I can't look at everything hard enough.
Oh mama, just look at me for one second as though you really saw me.
14 years have gone by. I'm dead. I married George Kips, mama.
Your grandmother, mama. And Molly's dead too. His appendix burst on
that camping trip to North Conway. We felt just terrible about it. Don't
you remember? But for one moment we're all together.
For one moment we're happy. Let's look at one another.
I can't go on. It goes so fast. We don't have time
to look at one another. I didn't realize all that was going on when
you never noticed. Take me back up the hill to my grave.
First weight. Hi, papa. At a clock's ticking and mama's
sunflowers and and food and coffee and new iron dresses
and hot baths and sleeping and waking up. Oh earth, you're too
wonderful for anybody to realize you. Do any human beings ever realize life
as they live it? Every, every minute. I'm ready to go back
now. I shouldn't listen to you because that's all human beings are.
Just thank you.
