0:00 Free Launch Monitor App 0:21 App Specs/Details 3:03 Live Indoor Testing 7:40 Live Outdoor Testing 10:52 Is It Good? 11:24 Issues/Hang Ups 12:43 Final Thoughts
okay so I've tested reviewed and
continued to use launch monitors from
all price ranges couple hundred bucks
500 bucks 800 bucks $3,000 $4,000
there's a lot of great launch monitors
out there but in today's video I'm going
to dive into a free launch monitor that
only uses the camera on your iPhone so
the app is called golf boy it's I'm not
bluffing it's free to download and if
you have an iPhone 12 or newer this app
will unlock the camera in your phone and
turn your phone into a launch monitor so
breaking down a little bit about it it's
free I'll reiterate that again and then
for $6.99 a month you unlock all of the
capabilities all of the software all of
the simulation yeah you could play golf
courses like you can play simulator golf
on your phone you unlock swing Vision
where it's going to analyze your golf
swing putt Vision all the data in in the
the launch monitor for $7 a month it's
it's pretty wild when you truly think
about it but I'm not bluffing it's legit
this is this is something that exists
that is a f it's hard to it's hard to
Fathom I'm I'm being brutally honest and
you may be going well there's probably
plus plus plus plus no there's no plus
plus plus the only Plus+ would be a
compatible tripod they want you to use a
short-legged tripod so like the tripod I
have the camera on right now is not
compatible so you can get a shortle
tripod from Amazon and you would have to
measure it and make markings on it if
you're going to go that route or for $70
70 bucks you can get the golf boy tripod
cuz this thing has the necessary
markings on it you extend it to here and
then you have low medium high and those
lines matter for the shot distance that
you are preparing to hit so if it's
under 200 yard low if it's 200 to 250 y
medium
and if it's over 250 yards high so it's
just kind of placing the camera at at
enough of a height above the golfball to
truly capture enough frames of impact to
give you your data in the launch monitor
and yeah these are the these are the
short legs so our total investment even
with a free trial month is basically
775 bucks but is it good that's the
that's the number one question and oh an
Android users I'm sorry it's not for you
and it's because there's just so much
different firmwares Hardwares the
cameras and Android phones are so
different it'd be very difficult for an
app developer to make one that would be
suited for all the different cameras and
all the different Hardware software
whereas with iPhones it's uniform so
that is why it's an iPhone only app so
enough talking about it let's just move
all this stuff away and show you my very
first straight from the box testing of
this phone launch monitor here in the
garage wow okay that's pretty
[Music]
awesome yeah I'd say that was pretty
accurate
wow wow wow that's
cool what's
this oh a little
[Music]
metronome oh that throws me off a little
bit that metronome is a nice little
touch
actually it tells me a little bit where
I am turn that
off so what can I see here history last
couple
shots
okay questions proove
[Music]
ball this is very
cool so it could I could do this oh it's
going to tell
me that's pretty cool
136 I mean that's pretty like what I
would expect out of a pitching
wedge like a smooth not quite full
pitching wedge start
report
wedge oh so if I
select a club now it knows what club I'm
using so it can give me a data report
interesting that's
[Music]
good
settings I have basically a coarse ball
okay change that so you can change the
ball in there custom
ball I have watched a video on this I
know you kind of have to maybe mess
around to
find because
[Music]
that seems
more let's see so we go into Co
[Music]
ball like I'm probably wanting to carry
this 1 you know 130 to
135 yeah 122 that's a
little I caught it a little off the toe
but if I change the ball setting
little more
accurate I watched um the let's play
through video and he said he had to kind
of mess around to find the right ball or
like
calibration I don't like this club speed
in meters per second though how do I
change
[Music]
that might have to mess around with that
[Music]
[Applause]
okay I mean it's pretty straightforward
it's pretty awesome like it's so easy to
use obviously you can kind of sit around
and really fine-tune the numbers in
there your settings but I literally just
opened this up and went that was
uh not a challenging process
we got to take it outside we got to hit
some drivers see how it handles that
pretty impressive stuff I got to be
honest there is a bit of like learning
curve like I definitely would need to
play around with getting the right ball
amplification right range ball at 1.05
was probably a little bit up but coar
ball in here was probably a little bit
down but you can mess around with that
you can change those things but what I
experienced here in the garage
was very very impressive for a $7 a
month launch monitor on something you
already own well we are set up we're in
there so I was able to change the
setting to yards and feet but we're set
up see what it
got off the heel
Club head speed maybe is a little
elevated ball speed seems pretty
accurate launch pretty accurate smash
1.27 I did neck it oh there we go yeah
258 that makes more sense carry 284
total for how poor I hit that yeah that
makes more
[Music]
sense I mean ball speed that's yeah it's
Club head speed I mean we saw a big 10
miles difference between
drives but generally speaking this data
is pretty dang
[Music]
good yeah that club head speed's a
little low but the ball speed
is probably pretty accurate I mean it's
cold
day
whoops but see
launch Direction
was that stuff's really
[Music]
good uh I wonder
if you would see different numbers with
driver with different finishes cuz I
wonder if like a glossy finish like Q
the Q I10 has versus like a matte finish
because we're seeing I mean apparently
the Club head speed was 125 there and it
wasn't but ball speed is pretty pretty
accurate carry was it's like launch and
ball speed are are pretty
good club head speed's a little
inconsistent but I feel like that could
be a limitation of a phone camera and
what the uh the crown of your driver
is I don't think I was in the thing
there
[Music]
whoops whereas that was all pretty
spot-on little low carry was
down that one was
all pretty pretty dang
good for a free launch monitor in your
phone that if you want all the data it's
$7 a month that's pretty cool that's
pretty
cool that was
awesome yeah that was I mean that's
pretty a little here and there like a
percent or two but
still man Color Me surprised and
impressed I mean honestly we see a
little bit of variance with Club head
speed but that could really come down to
the gloss finish on that driver versus a
matte finish like the camera is going to
reflect light but still you're getting
very very good data out of your phone
and you paid seven bucks to unlock it
like it's remarkable to think how much
some of these units that I had earlier
how much they cost onetime purchase or
to maintain month over month then you
look at this and you're looking at the
data I'm getting and the data is is
pretty good few Hang-Ups obviously like
I live in Florida it's cold right now
but if I was doing this on an 85 95° day
phone sitting out in the sun that could
be a bit of a problem it could overheat
very very quickly it's running an app
and it's being baked on by Sun another
little hang-up is like if you like to
listen to music when you practice or
those type of things your phone becomes
a little bit inoperable but that could
be good because rather than having your
phone in your pocket maybe playing music
and then a text comes your phone's up
there you're hitting shots you're not
swiping in and out of apps between shots
so it's one of those things that
actually could narrow your focus when
you practice because it essentially just
turns your phone only into a launch
monitor and not to a communication
device so there's there's good and
there's bad with that and yeah a bit of
the elephant in the room there is no
spin but with a lot of these more value
launch monitors spin is harder to come
by and if you are using range balls spin
is a kind of arbitrary number at that
you need to unlock specific golf balls
to get the best spin readings on some of
these things so having no spin H it
could bother some people but it's $7
you're getting very good data to keep
you in check with your practice for
seven bucks the simulator stuff all that
that's just fun that's just novelty but
for practicers this is a really good
tool like a really good app especially
if you're indoors like I've said the
heat there could be some limitations
Outdoors but if you have a net you have
a little bit of an indoor setup you can
get some good efficient data out of this
app on your phone and I think back to
when I was playing when money was tight
and it was hard to come by getting my
hands on a launch monitor something like
this could just help keep me in check
get me aligned with what I'm carrying
shots start line launch angles launch
directions like there's good data in
there the club head speed with driver we
could kind of but you shouldn't you
should generally know your Club head
speed to a degree to an extent but the
data that you get from this if you are a
practicer and you want to refine a
little bit especially narrowing down
your carry yardage your gapping for
seven
bucks I have to kind of remind myself
like I want to hold it to like well if
we compare to Mio plus and MLM and d d
it's not a $500 unit that you're Buy and
you have to unlock it's a $7 a month
subscription on a phone app it's really
good like I went into this somewhat
skeptical thinking it'd be like all
right we're going to see a couple good
numbers here or there and it's going to
be all over the place but the
consistency is quite good the accuracy
is quite good we saw a few few
limitations but man if you want to
unlock some data especially in this cold
off season and you have an an indoor
facility or range you go to and you
don't want to pay for time on a bay or
uh buy a $500 unit or an $800 unit you
can download an app for free and pay
seven bucks a month to unlock lots of
data so check it out golf boy really
really cool it's going to keep
developing it's going to keep advancing
so yeah well done golf boy go check it
out let me know have you used it do you
use it let's talk about it in the
comments and we'll uh we'll see you in
the next video
