Welcome everybody to Art and Design. My name is Karen Eir and today we are going to be painting
in 0 degrees in Reykjavik. We're going to be painting the beautiful Asian right in front of me
and with a little twist we're going to be letting people, passerbys, add their own little thing into
the painting by saying maybe, oh can you add my favorite color or my favorite animal or just
anything, anything they say I will add into this painting. So it's essentially it's going to be
like a little bit of a mix between realism and abstract and fantasy and we're just going to see
how it goes. Let's go! So to begin with I really enjoy using red as my base color. There's something
about the red that makes just literally everything glow. It skews my very squinty eyes. The sun is
very bright and I have blue eyes and they can't handle the sun but let's see how am I going to do
this. I was even thinking maybe we should turn the canvas like this. Let's do that. Yeah let's go
crazy today. I want to do something different. Hang on. So we're going to try this new thing today of
doing a landscape painting in portrait mode. Let's see what happens. We're doing a lot of wet water
and acrylic just to get the lines of Asian. So I'm following the lines of the mountain just like
sketching them in, seeing the shades and the highlights. Yeah this is quite big, this is quite
big. Okay you know what we do then? Then we just take a lot of water and just do like this because
I can always make it more saturated but if I just fade everything out like this then I can start
over again. And the most important part right now is just to nail the sketch because through the
we understand how the painting is going to go. Okay I've decided this is the landline for the
Asia. There's a lot longer space between here and the rocks. This essentially should be ocean but I
really want rocks over here so I'm gonna just add some rocks. The rocks that are in front which
through my perspective really shouldn't be there but they're beautiful. I want rocks. Okay and now
I can add the Asia. So the Asia is quite small because it's so far away. Maybe it's like a 200
millimeter camera so it's like very close up. So maybe this should be like a big rock. The most in
foreground should be the biggest and the furthest thing should be small but I really want to make
the Asia really big so everything in the front should be like actually really big. We have the
peak because I actually think the peak shouldn't go there now that you have mentioned it. It should
go in the one third line. It should go in this line because it's in the one third of the canvas.
Okay so you can see the big peak in the Asia over there. It falls a little bit downward so I've done
like a downward line over here and now I'm going to add the second hill or slope which goes in this
direction. It goes here. It goes here. This one is like fading in and then we have like the lines
and we have more lines. So perspectively we should be looking at each line of the mountain
and trying to see where proportionally it lands. So the Asia has like lines that are horizontal
so we need those horizontal lines on the one third proportionally to the painting. So it's one, two,
three. You see? One third. And then we have beautiful lines that go like swivelly. Like
very organic lines. More diagonal lines. We're basically just mapping out the mountain right now.
There's like so many shadows in the Asia right now. It's gorgeous. Or the color should be the
most saturated in the foreground. So the Asia is obviously faded into the background because of the
atmosphere in the air. So it's always going to be desaturated or more desaturated than the foreground.
I've got to clean my brush to get the beautiful phthalo blue into the sky. Pretty clean.
Getting the phthalo. Gorgeous phthalo blue. I had to google this the other day. What paint color is
the sky? And that's phthalo blue. Exactly the same color. Wow. Gorgeous.
Do you want to add your own thing? Or like by words? You can also come back in like maybe five
minutes, ten minutes when you walk back and then you can add it. Okay cool. You have to bring the
best idea now since you get time for it. The ocean is a beautiful color today. I don't know what color
but let's figure it out. Maybe a little bit yellow. It's pretty deep like color-wise and depth-wise.
Hey guys. I'm wondering if you would like to be in our video. So maybe like if you have an idea
maybe what color should the mountain be or anything like this? I don't know. Some green, brown, like the grassy banks there.
I don't know. Grassy banks. Yeah. So you're thinking more maybe like a green color rather than that
yellow grass. Something in the middle I guess. Something in the middle. Okay yeah.
The colors. Oh hang on. I love that. Girl hang on. What? That's crazy. Like in the daylight right?
Like have the northern lights. That's awesome dude. Yeah I like that. I'm gonna do that. Thank you.
And what's your name? Emily. Emily. Thank you so much for your idea Emily.
Okay we have our first idea guys. We're gonna add the northern lights into a daylight painting.
Let's see how that goes. What color is the northern lights? Hang on. Okay. Should we do green? Should we do
pink? Because we sometimes see like green and pink northern lights all together. Like on the top
there's pink and on the bottom there's green. Okay so I actually have a gorgeous green color right now
which I'm going to add to the palette. If I can find it. It's in my alcohol bag.
Not my bag with alcohol but the bag from the alcohol store.
Hello. Welcome my friend. What's your name? I'm Kenyon. Kenyon. Nice to meet you and we
heard you have an idea for a painting. Yeah I've got a couple ideas. Yeah. A simple idea and a
silly one. Okay. Okay. Love it. So a simple idea. I noticed there's some green in the water. Yeah.
In the foreground especially. So I'm gonna be getting a little of that. Okay. Okay. Yeah. Yeah.
And then maybe slightly silly would be like a little viking longship in the distance or something.
Viking longship. Okay. Something historic. Okay. Okay. I see it. I see it. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Well
so you know viking ships they often have like a guy on like the front of the ship right. Like a
animal of some sort. Okay. What should the animal be? Oh I don't know. First thing that comes to
mind is just a dragon. A dragon. Okay. Okay. A classic or a snake or something. A snake. Yeah.
Have you ever heard of like the the worm in the lake? There's like a huge worm. No. In Icelandic
lake. Okay. Hang on. That sounds cool. Maybe uh what's his name? Midgardsormrinn. Okay. Yeah.
Maybe he can be there. Yeah. Okay. Okay. Thank you so much for your great idea. A viking ship and
the green colors in the ocean right? Yeah. Yeah. Okay. We'll see what you come up with. Yeah. Maybe
come back in like 30 minutes, 40 minutes if you want and you can see the final painting with the
viking ship and everything. Awesome. Okay. Sick. Thank you so much man. Nice to meet you. Nice to
meet you. Bye bye. Okay. We have our next idea. Viking ship. Okay. So I think. The northern lights
This is turning very Icelandic.
Um so I'm thinking yes exactly like a viking ship. Maybe
I don't need to tell you guys. I can just paint it for you guys. Let's do that.
So we're going to be because we first had the idea of the northern lights from
our nice friends from earlier. Um and I wanted to ask the cameraman if this is the
correct green. Does it need more yellow maybe? Maybe a little like this. I think that that was
good. Yeah. Okay. Let's begin with the northern lights. Let's see how this goes. Okay.
Oh I'm scared to put the first mark. Okay. Hang on. Hang on. Okay. Maybe it needs to be like actually
pretty more wet or what? No let's just do it. Let's just do it. Okay. Okay.
Northern lights. Northern lights in the daylight. Why not? Because this is an abstract painting.
I'm quite cold so we're going to be finishing this inside. So you have to wait a few seconds
