What's going on everybody this is Island Hopper TV and today we're going to show you the 30
best things to do around Melbourne Australia. This here is the fastest growing city in all
of the country with a population of 5.2 million people. Located here in the southern part of
Victoria this is going to be one of the best Melbourne travel guides you've ever seen. First
up here we are at the Great Ocean Road. This area here is known as the 12 Apostles which is a group
of towering limestone sea stacks located off the coast of Port Campbell National Park. There used
to be 12 but because of erosion there's now only eight. Here we are now at Brighton Beach. We're
going to explore some of the beaches over here. There are many beaches around here including
Elwood Beach, Half Moon Beach. Those are all beaches you can check out while in Melbourne.
And we've arrived at the Brighton Bathing Boxes. These bathing boxes are famous because they're
colorful and they're photogenic. People like to come here and take pictures but actually they are
functional and have a utility. You'll see people who will be hanging out reading a book or just
chilling in and out of those bathing boxes. Now we're in an area called St. Kilda. St. Kilda is
really close to Brighton Beach. This one's a bit bigger. I would actually prefer this one even
though Brighton's a bit more famous because of the bathing boxes but I prefer this one. It's got
restaurants nearby. There's a community there. There's Luna Park. There's a big ferris wheel
here. The boardwalk is great for walking. The beach seems like there's more bathers out here so
I would say definitely consider St. Kilda if you're looking for a beach day where you've got
restaurants and convenience with the tram and public metros all right there. These are great
things to do when the weather in Melbourne is cooperating with the sunshine. It's not always
going to be perfect weather here though so on the day like that you want to get outside you can check
out many of the Melbourne zoo or safari attractions around the area. Consider Werribee Open Range Zoo
or Healesville Sanctuary. Now let's go inside the Queen Victoria Market. This is located near the
Melbourne CBD and wow the food selection in here is amazing. Fresh seafood. You can order food right
there and have whatever you want cooked or you can get fresh cuts of meat, fruit, all sorts of
different foods and it's an amazing market but do plan accordingly because it is closed on Monday
and Wednesdays and it's open from 6 a.m to 3 p.m throughout the week. On the weekend it's open from
6 a.m to 4 p.m and then on Sunday 9 a.m to 4 p.m so be sure to plan accordingly. Here I am at the
Sea Life Aquarium located right in the Melbourne CBD along the Yarra Riverfront. This is a great
place to take the kids. It's open Monday to Friday 10 to 5 p.m, Saturday and Sunday 9 30 a.m
to 5 p.m. Last entry though is 4 p.m so if you're looking for some things to do with the kids expect
to spend about two hours here. I do recommend booking ahead of time online. Also another activity
is the Luna Park nearby St. Kilda. That's only open on the weekends but that's a great activity
for people with families. I came during the week and it was closed. Let's go to the top of the
Melbourne Skydeck. Ticket prices vary between 33 and 44 Aussie dollars. Now do keep in mind this
isn't the Burj Khalifa. It's not a very tall tower but it's tall enough to get great views
and you get 360 degrees. They got a cafe up here. I would say if you wanted a good view of the Yarra
River looking out in all directions towards the port or out towards the beaches you should come
up here and it's worth it. I like it. This is my second time coming up here actually to the Skydeck
and it's a nice activity to do especially on a hot day when you got sunshine and blue skies. Now
here we are at the Central Business District also known as the CBD. These are common all across
Australia. If you guys have watched our other videos about Perth or Melbourne or Sydney you'll
see we talk about the CBD. This is where the city comes to life. I mean this is the heart and soul
of these Aussie cities. So if you're someone who's coming here this is a great place to find
the hustle and bustle but also lots of food options. Maybe this is the best place to get
your hotel as well. I did stay at the Holiday Inn on Bourke Street. It is a new hotel. They
also have a Hotel Indigo right next door. Great location. Here we are at Flinders Street Station.
This train station here is actually considered the very center point of the city because from here
you can get a train to Brighton or outside the city anywhere you need to go. This is right there
along the Yarra River next to the CBD. So great location and convenient. This area here is Federation
Square. Literally right across the street from Flinders. Now around here they do have several
different museums but this is also an open space meeting area. They have some big screens here.
As you can see they are setting up Christmas. Keep in mind Christmas happens in the southern
hemisphere during the summer months. December is a hot month although it is Melbourne so you're
going to get a mixed bag of weathers. Behind me here we have the ACMI Museum which stands for
Australian Center for the Moving Image. They get about a million visitors every year. They've got
exhibitions, screenings, commissions, festivals. A nice way to get out of that weird Melbourne
weather. By the way if you don't know about the weather just ask a local. They'll tell you it's
all seasons in one day sometimes. As with many of the museums in Australia it's usually free for the
permanent collection but then they have other exhibitions that cost money and you can pay for
those if you wanted to go. And if you're planning to visit Australia I highly recommend you watch
our videos down in the description. Here we are at the Shrine of Remembrance. Commonly known as the
Shrine it's located here in Melbourne along the King's Domain on St. Kilda Road. It started as a
war memorial for World War I but now it functions as a war memorial for all wars that Australians
have fought in and gave the ultimate sacrifice. It looks like a Greek Parthenon but it's actually
just a real beautiful Shrine of Remembrance to all the fallen soldiers. And if you're looking for an
outdoor green space you can find that at Alexandra Gardens. You can see on this day I was getting
lots of sunshine and blue skies which made for a really nice experience. Although you've got to
wear some sort of sun protection down here in Melbourne because there's something about the sun
that just burns your skin a little bit more down in Australia than other places. And you'll have to
ask the Aussies what they think about that but this park is beautiful. A nice place to exercise
in the morning or in the evenings or maybe in the afternoon if you're into that. This area we're at
right now is the Royal Botanical Garden located right next to the Shrine of Remembrance in the
Alexander Garden. It is generally free open daily so you can easily get around here. They offer tours
if you wanted to pay. I think it's around 12 to 15 Aussie dollars. This place is a really beautiful
botanical garden. I mean the flora and fauna in Australia is spectacular. They have some of the
most beautiful gardens all across this country. And yes I've been to every one of the botanical
gardens in all the big cities. Now let's explore the National Gallery Victoria. Again thanks to
those Aussie taxpayers this one's free as well except for the exhibition. So you can come down
here if you're into art and walk around. They've got this really cool looking statue right when you
walk in. I don't know exactly what it is but yeah this is a great place for people who are into art.
I'm not necessarily into the older art but I do like the more modern art. So they have several
different levels here. It's not going to cost you a penny when it's two o'clock in the afternoon in
the middle of summer. Hey this is a great place to go and get some of that air con to cool you down
so you can go back out onto the river walk after this one. I will say this after having been to
many of the different art galleries across Australia. The art and the information history
that interests me the most is the Aboriginal stuff. That stuff is just so unique to Australia
and that seems like every time that captivates me whether it's in Perth or Melbourne or Sydney
that's what I'm really into. And next door and next door to this art museum is the Performing
Arts Center and here they have a theater and you can check out the shows. Go online and see what's
going on in the time frame that you're going to be here. This could be something fun to do on the
evening. Now we'll walk along the riverfront here. The Yarra River is nice. I mean they've got plenty
of cafes, bars. It's a place you can go in the morning time. It's a place you can get lunch or
come in the evening and have some beer or some wine and dinner at one of the many different
restaurants along the Yarra. And it's on both sides that you can find a venue. Sometimes you
can even find venues out in the middle of the river right next to the bridge there. But this
is a nice place to walk around. I would say you got to come here if you're visiting Melbourne.
This along with the CBD is just an area you've got to soak up the vibes at some point while you're
here visiting. And as you can see people are wearing sweater and pants because one of the days
I was in Melbourne it was cold. So hot and cold just kind of flip-flopping. Now let's talk about
that metro that I was telling you about. So I got a Mikey card. That's a card you can get in the
station. They did just open up an underground area for the metro. So they have some underground
stations now as well as above ground trains. But you're going to want to get that Mikey card
and you could see beautiful transit systems. Clean, efficient, not dangerous. Some areas of Melbourne
can be a bit sketchy but mostly going around Melbourne on these trains is really a safe
experience compared to what you would find in other countries maybe. So good job Australia with
clean and efficient metro system with beautiful trains, light rail and long-range commuter train.
So if you're looking to save some money and travel around Australia maybe with the family
this is a great way to do it. Other option is taxis or Uber but those can be expensive.
Now here we are at Hozier Lane. There's a few different areas that are known for its street art.
People come here for the street art, the cultural experience. As you know some of these cities in
Victoria and in New South Wales were set up as penal colonies. So it's kind of a way to tell a
story about a history but also connect the dots to the modern time and that's why this street art is
allowed to happen. Where they spray paint these murals and all this stuff in this area of the CBD.
It's just outside of the CBD actually. I barely saw any graffiti anywhere else in Australia. You'll
see it a little bit but you mostly see it right here in the areas where it's allowed. So it's a way
for people who want to do graffiti they can come here and do it do their street art but then outside
you're not going to really see much of the spray painting going on. So the main area here is Hozier
Lane. Also they have ACDC Lane where they've got a little bit of street art and they're kind of
letting that happen in that area. It's kind of a cool little cultural experience actually. Another
thing that I like to do is ride bikes. So they have these uber electric bikes. You know it's a
great way to get around if you need to go long distance. Here we are at the Melbourne Cricket Club.
So yes they do play cricket here but this is also where they play Aussie rules football. I think four
Melbourne teams play here including Richmond Tigers and several other teams. But yeah they also
have a cafe in here where you can get a view or even a tour of the grounds. And I'm here now at
the Australian Sports Museum. Yeah so here we are at the Sports Museum. It is inside the stadium but
they call it the Cricket Club of course. It's not a stadium down here. But down here they have the
history of all the Australian sports including the Sydney Olympics and also Aussie rules football,
cricket. You can learn all about all of those sports down here because in the southern hemisphere
or in this part of the world I should say, cricket and Aussie rules football are very unique to this
area and very popular. They love it down here. Ticket price for adults is $37 to $45 depending
on the time and kids are about $16 to $21. This is one of my favorite museums. In this area we have
the Treasury Gardens and the Fitzroy Gardens. I'm going to show you around a little bit. One thing
that caught my attention about Fitzroy Gardens was the Cook House. As you know Captain James Cook
the area around Australia here for the English and that's what led to the colonization of this
area of Australia. So I wanted to visit Cook's house but it turns out this is Cook's parents
house. They actually deconstructed it in England and brought it over here. Captain Cook didn't
actually live here although you will learn a lot about Captain Cook at this house and the women
that work there are very friendly and they're helpful. And the gardens around here are amazing.
On a hot day you can hang out underneath a tree. Now here we are in Chinatown. Chinatown is a great
place to go if you're looking for Asian cuisine. They don't just have Chinese food they have Korean,
Japanese and they have a mix of different other cuisines in the area. But if you're in the mood
for some dim sum, which I'm usually in the mood for some Chinese or Asian food because I spend a
lot of time in Asia so I've developed a taste for that kind of cuisine. I got some Banh Mi while I
was here, Vietnamese. So Chinatown is a place to go if you're looking for restaurants. It is right
near the CBD area. Also they have the Burke Street Mall. That's a nice area in the CBD for shopping.
And if you wanted to get outside of Melbourne a bit and do some excursions you can do the Puffing
which is a train that takes you out into the bush as they call it in Australia. Some call it the
outback but this is really just the bush because there's trees it's not out in the middle. They
also have an area you can go south where they have some penguins on Phillip Island if you're
into penguins. And if you love casinos you can go to the Crown Palace. I'm not going to go inside
there right now but it's got the most reviews on Google in the entire city. It's around 55,000
reviews so you can see it's quite a popular place. They also have a hotel there it's right along the
Yarra River near the CBD. But thanks for watching this one and we'll see you on the next one from
Perth. Click the link or check the links down in the description. Click here.
