We head out to explore one of Utah’s most underrated and scenic mountain ranges, the Bear River Range. From muddy river crossings, snow drifts, to peaceful, tucked-away campsites, this trip had it all. Things take a turn when one of the crossings leaves us stuck and in need of a winch recovery. Along the way, we also stumbled upon a somber piece of history, a memorial marking the site of an old plane crash. Join us for adventure, incredible mountain views, and a bit of unexpected recovery work in the Utah backcountry. This is Episode 1 of a 2-part series.

Whoa! Stop!
Tucked in the northeastern corner of
Utah and southern Idaho, where rugged
ridgeel lines meet alpine forest, lies
the Bare River Range. A hidden gem for
those who seek solitude and challenge in
equal measure. On this trip, we set out
to explore its back roads and trails,
never quite knowing what lies around the
next bend. We are joined on this
adventure by our friend Jake and his
Tacoma. This is a look at what it's like
to travel deep into one of Utah's most
underrated mountain ranges.

It's slippery.
Go back.
All right. Forward.
Actually, no. You're fine.

Little bump and she'll go right up.
All

[Music]
right.
Yeah.
[Music]
[Music]
Oh my god.
It was my turn to make the crossing. And
of course, I had to try the harder line.
Heat.
[Music]
Heat.
That's a big drop.
He's just going to send it.
[Music]
After several tries with no luck, it was
time to take the easier line. But now it
wasn't so straightforward. I'd already
dug ruts into the mud, and even with the
wheels turned, the truck just wanted to
push straight ahead.
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
All
[Music]
right, that's fine. It's fine. Never
mind. I'll shut my mouth.
[Music]
Stop.
[Music]
This might be
Well, you can see the predicament we got
the truck in. I think after attempting
this hole so many times, my tires got
really gked up and then obviously coming
up here, you can see it slid off where I
was coming up. And uh it's dangerously
my back is basically hanging off in this
giant hole here. So to be controlled,
we're going to winch it out with Jake's
truck here. So that way it's nice and
controlled and we're able to get this
tire back where it belongs. All righty.
Well, here comes the winching. All
right. Are you ready?
I am
ready.
On the winch now.
Okay, I feel him slowly pulling me out.
Start turning my wheel to help him out.
Not applying any gas cuz I don't want
the back to slip.
We should be good there.
Nice and controlled
uh way to pull out the truck.
And with that, a successful winch
recovery.
You can see just where my tire slipped
off the edge there and fell
where it did. And uh winching makes it
easy. So, I'll hopefully have a winch
soon on my truck. Uh hopefully in the
next couple months, but we'll see how
that goes.
After the recovery, we kept moving and
made our way towards tonight's camp
spot.

Well, after quite the interesting turn
of events today, we have arrived here at
camp with some muddy vehicles. It's
actually a really pretty camp spot here.
It's kind of on a grassy field here.
tucked between the trees. We got nice
some nice rock structures here. And you
may or may not be able to hear it, but
there's actually a creek that runs just
right there. So, we're going to set up
camp. Uh probably hang around, take some
pictures, and uh enjoy the rest of the
afternoon.
So, as you can see, we finished setting
up camp. You can see Jake has his Harker
EDC set up there. And then we got our
truck with the Harker Exo setup. And you
can see the antenna at the top. If
you're wondering what that is, that is
the high boost cell phone signal
booster. And what that does is when
you're out here remote like we are and
the cell phone signal is very weak,
the antenna up top amplifies takes in
the weak signal, takes it to an
amplifier and then there's an internal
antenna inside the topper that boosts
the signal so the cell phone signal is
actually usable. So we've been doing
that and using that which is super
helpful when we're out here in the
middle of nowhere. If you're interested
in the HighBoost cell phone signal
booster, I'm going to link it down in
the description. Also, we'll most likely
have a discount code for you.
We hung around camp for the remainder of
the afternoon, sharing some laughs
before cooking some dinner and taking in
the scenery around us.
[Music]
Heat.
Heat.
[Applause]
[Music]
Heat. Heat.
[Music]
The next morning, we started a small
fire and took in the sounds of the
nearby creek and birds chirping all
around us as we ate our breakfast.
Being responsible campers, we made sure
the fire was completely out before
hitting the road to find new trails to
explore.
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
[Music]
All right. So, going along the trails,
you've I'm sure seen in some of the
videos already, there's been a lot of
snow kind of on the side of the trail
and not really on the trail itself.
Well, that has changed as you can see.
Looks like it's already been driven
through, but there is a pretty big snow
bank here. So, we're going to uh give it
our best shot. I think we'll be good. I
think the truck has enough ground
clearance. At least RZR2 Jake should
have enough ground clearance, but we'll
see. We're going to give it a shot.
[Music]
So, here we are made to the top of the
trail that we just did with all the snow
banks you just saw. And supposedly the
reason we came up here is there is a
crashed plane just a small walk up this
trail here. So, we're going to go check
it out and see what it's all about. This
was a tragic crash. The C-46 transport
plane took off from Seattle, Washington
in the early morning. It was headed to
Fort Jackson, South Carolina with 37
servicemen on board who had just served
in the horrors of the Korean War and
were on their way home to see their
loved ones. At approximately 4:12 a.m.
on January 6th, 1953, the C-46 crashed
into the side of this very mountain. The
wreck was found 5 days later and medics
parachuted into the scene. There were no
survivors of the crash. All 40 people,
which were the 37 servicemen and three
flight crew members, lost their lives.
Deep snow made it impossible to identify
the bodies, and the records sat under
military guard until June 20th, 1953,
when recovery operations were finally
complete. The aircraft was forced down
as a result of ice on the wings and
severe turbulence. The only thing that
remains of the wreckage today are the
chopped top pine trees that are frozen
in time.
After paying our respects, it was now
time to head back down the trail.
[Music]
[Music]
Holy
Yes.
All right. Well, Jake made that look
easy. So, the key is to hit it with the
right momentum. So, let's give it a
shot.
[Music]
Easy work. A truck ate it up.
I think it also helps that this truck
has a good amount of weight behind it,
kind of pushing it like a snow plow. So,
[Music]
[Music]
Well, it's been a fun day of exploring
so far. And we just pulled off the trail
head here to this little spot that
overlooks I'm not sure if you can see it
right there, but the river kind of winds
around us in front of us just back and
forth, back and forth. It's really
pretty. So, we're going to stop here,
eat some lunch before we head back on
the trails.
[Music]
Hey.
[Music]
After wrapping up lunch, it was time to
hit a few more trails before Jake headed
home and we continued on to find camp
for tonight.
[Music]
[Music]
Well, after a very fun and eventful day
today, we have arrived at camp for
tonight. So, you can see the spot. It's
a nice spot. Nothing crazy, but it does
have this beautiful river flowing about
50 to 100 ft away from the camp spot.
And once we finish getting set up here,
get the topper popped open and stuff,
I'm going to show walk down there and
show you just how magical that river is.
So you can see the truck just up there.
So we just did a short little walk,
put our chairs here to enjoy this
beautiful view.
