Guess what the one thing is that I hear over and over again with private clients
who are over 50? It's that they feel like they've lost
their way, they feel like they don't want to be frumpy,
they want to look trendy, they still want to look good, but obviously there's some
types of styles that don't quite work for them. So today's video
is all about elegant but edgy outfit ideas for the over 50s.
My name is Rochelle Barrett. I have been a personal stylist for 25 years. I now
help people like you build capsule wardrobes that mix and match
easily. Thank you to everybody who's been liking, subscribing, sharing. It really
helps me bring more content to you. So without further ado, let's get started.
Number one is quirky knitwear and a metallic skirt.
Now there's several reasons why I kind of like this type of look.
First thing is, I think knitwear doesn't have to be boring. You know, I don't know,
I don't know about you, but I always kind of looked at knitwear and thought, oh you
know, it's a little bit boring. It's like granny's way of knitwear, particularly
when I was a teenager. I don't know why I thought that, but I did. But obviously
there's some wonderful kind of designs out there,
quirky little features like this jumper that I've got here,
which is from Cedar. It's a Parisian based brand.
I can put the link to that in the notes. And it's just got kind of a wrap, it's
got kind of a wrap feature, which is really cozy, it's
really warm, but I really like the contrast between that
and my metallic skirt, which I picked up pre-loved.
There's something about something that catches the light differently. I've often
talked about this when you wear something, so obviously knitwear
absorbs a lot of the light a lot of the time and the metallic kind of reflects
it, so it's really interesting. So I teamed that with a lovely little
wrap jacket as well from Cedar, which I really like the colours of this.
It kind of, because you've got like the cream
of the jumper and then the metallic, which is really kind of warm and gold,
this kind of wrap jacket kind of pulls the two together alongside as well,
which the boots, which are from Vervea, do as well. So they're kind of in a
similar colour. So this is kind of very muted,
neutral tones, which, you know, would look sort of have that kind of elegant
side to it and do look kind of, you could sort of say, almost boring on their own,
but when you add in that metallic skirt, it kind of lifts it and gives it that
edge. Next up's quite a simple one and that's
Now what do I mean by tailored? I mean something that fits you,
not something that's too tight, you know, where the button's pulling away
or something that's too baggy, that's really loose, makes you look like you're
wearing a husband or your dad's jacket. I mean something that's just tailored to
you. Now wear that with a straight leg pair of indigo jeans. Now I say indigo
because I think that dark navy kind of colour suits most skin tones as well,
so you can kind of pull that through to the rest of your wardrobe.
And, you know, a kind of darker blazer usually works well and a graphic t-shirt.
So trying to find a t-shirt that's a little bit edgy, maybe something from
All Saints, I'll put some examples here and also I'll put the links to
everything in the notes as well. But yeah, this kind of look, if it was
just like the blazer and obviously if it was worn with a formal skirt, it's very
then formal. With the jeans, it can be a little bit
boring, but putting that graphic t-shirt in,
it keeps it elegant but it still gives it that little bit of edge.
This week in my VIP area on YouTube, we were actually talking about how to spot
fake items and also how to spot quality. So I talked all about all the different
little aspects that I look at when I'm looking for something that's
quality. Because obviously whatever you're buying, you want the best quality
that you can get. So if you're interested in joining us,
it's the price of a coffee once a month. We meet live
once every month. It's a tiny little community of wonderful women who are really
supportive of each other. So if you want to learn more about that,
the link is in the notes. Next up is a monochromatic outfit. Now I
talk about this quite a lot in terms of how to wear monochromatic
outfits. Now I often think that, again, it's quite good to have different
textures with this. But one thing that works really well is
kind of a turtleneck or a high neck sweater,
relatively fitted, skims the body, with maybe an A-line skirt. Now this could be
in leather, it could be in wool, it could be in
cotton, it could be whatever you want really. But keep it all one colour and
then have a proper colour in your shoes, maybe a bag that matches. So it could be
bright red, maybe bright yellow, or maybe, you know, something in a hat or
something like that, or a piece of jewellery, earrings and maybe a necklace
that matches. Now if you do have a turtleneck jumper,
then have a necklace that comes on the outside of it and comes down quite far
so it fits nicely and easily around that neck.
So yeah, this one's really simple and again it's quite classic,
that turtleneck A-line skirt with a pair of boots or a pair of shoes.
But when you put in that proper colour it gives it that little bit of edge again.
Now this one's for outerwear. Now I really like
the whole tailored wool coats. I think they're classic, they're
timeless, they'll stay in your wardrobe for a long time.
But if you want to add something that's a little bit more edgy, so it's still got
that classic timeless feel about it, but it's a little bit more edgy, choose a
jacket that's got a check in it. Now what that does is it just gives it
something a little bit more quirky and a little bit more interesting.
So this one again is from Sida and then I have teamed this with a beret which
picks up one of the colours in the check. And that's what I always talk about is
with your accessories, always pick up one of the colours in the
check or in the print to use with your accessories. It kind of
pulls it together. It's very classic looking but because of the check it
gives it that little bit more edge. Now if you still need help with your
capsule wardrobe or any wardrobe, if you're editing, decluttering, definitely
download my capsule wardrobe planner. It's free, you can fill it out as you go
along. It gives you lots of tips and helps you think about what to keep and
what to lose. Because obviously it's all very well putting these
outfits together, but if you're looking at your wardrobe and you're overwhelmed
and you've got a wardrobe full of clothes but nothing to wear, it's not
going to work is it? So take a look in the notes, the link's
there. Next up is a boucle jacket and a toile
net skirt. Now I really like this one because
again the boucle jacket, it kind of harps back to
what you know Chanel were doing. It's very big this season as well, there's a
lot of them about. And I like the idea of this because it's
really kind of classic. It's got that 19 sort of 50s, 60s feel about it.
But then when you team it with this net toile skirt,
that gives it kind of a more of an edge. It gives it a very kind of modern edge.
Now the way that you wear this again is maybe knee-high boots underneath,
maybe a pair of trainers, you know whatever your comfort is.
But I've kind of teamed it with these black slingbacks.
Like I say, all the notes to all of this or similar will be
in the notes, so you can take a look at each outfit. But I really like this one
together because it's kind of, the net skirt gives it something a
little bit more quirky, whilst the boucle jacket
has that classic kind of elegance. Next up is a fitted turtleneck and a
statement skirt. Now this is similar to the one that I did
before but without the kind of added bright extras. So this time we'll
keep it really simple with usually kind of a dark I think, because
they're quite fitted. Particularly if you've got a bit of a tummy and you're
worried about that, go for a darker matte colour.
But maybe say black or dark brown or charcoal, something like that, in a
turtleneck. And then the statement skirt, I would go
for something either like I say with the net that I've
done before, maybe you could go something metallic,
or maybe you could go for something that's got an interesting print or even
leather. Like a leather A-line skirt would look really
classic and timeless, but the fact that it's the leather
would give it that edge as well. So again we're trying to go for something
that's a little bit some kind of very elegant but also has that little bit of
an edge and that leather A-line skirt would work really
really well with that. You can wear that as well with a pair of
over-the-knee boots underneath. There were a lot of these about recently and
that's a belted blazer dress. So these tend to be quite short, so you
need to be quite brave to wear one of these. But if it's
something that you want to look at, then what I would do is wear it with a
underneath, you know, and maybe ankle boots or
little pumps or whatever's your type of shoe that you prefer.
But again this one's really interesting because it's the classic blazer, which
of course has appeared for eons, but then the fact that this is a
style in a dress gives it that edge. So have the whole dress just be the
statement in itself, you don't need anything else to add to this, you don't
need anything to dress it up. Next up is layered knitwear with an
interesting skirt. So this one I like, there's quite a lot of this
about where you have like almost like a, looks like a tank top or it looks like a
jumper or a sweater with a shirt underneath. So something like that.
Again it's very classic but it also has that little bit of an edge on it and the
one that's, the one that I've got here from Cedar is
really interesting because you've got the little ties at the side.
So I've teamed this with a similar kind of tone with the black
leather panel in the skirt and then it kind of flares out into a pleat.
So then you're kind of matching it through but it's not obvious you're
matching it through if that makes sense. So it kind of creates something
which it has lots of timeless sort of elegant
elements to it but also looks very quirky and has that edge as well.
Now if you feel like you've lost your way and you're not inspired by your
wardrobe anymore and you want to be able to feel good again
instead of just feeling safe or maybe your body type's changed
since the menopause or slightly before since having children,
definitely get in touch with me. The link's in the notes where you can book
in for a discovery call with me where we can have a lovely little chat
and I can talk to you about how I might be able to support you and help you
get to where you want to be. So the link to that is in the notes.
The next one up is one of my favourites. I love a jumpsuit myself. I wear them
frequently. It makes just getting dressed so easy.
So a classic timeless jumpsuit with a statement belt.
So I would advise you, if you're going to go for this one, keep the jumpsuit in
one block colour. Maybe navy blue, maybe black, charcoal
grey. If you want to go lighter, go lighter but do be aware
if you go lighter, if you've got weight you know around your tummy or your
bottom or anywhere like that that you're a little bit conscious of,
it will make those areas look bigger. So I recommend darker colours if that's what
you're trying to hide. So then keep it in a block colour but
then have a really interesting statement belt. Maybe it could be metallic,
maybe it could have some sort of animal print on it, maybe it could have an
interesting buckle. But yeah, so this one's really quite
simple. So a simple classic timeless jumpsuit
with a statement belt. Now the next one feels like it harks back
to the 90s but I still kind of like it and that's a moto jacket with
a midi dress. Now what I would do with this
is you can go with the moto jacket, whatever colour you want
but I would somehow link the colour of the moto jacket through to some sort of
print on the dress or somewhere else in your outfit if it's not in the standard
sort of denim blue. So if you're going for another colour
then I would link it through somehow. But yeah, standard moto jacket, you could go
for something that's got a floral print, you could go for something
that's in the same block colour, a little pair of ankle boots and
maybe a pair of hoe hoop earrings if you really want to go for that 90s kind of
look. Now the dress on its own with the boots
would look really classic, easy and timeless but adding that moto
denim trucker jacket in, it kind of gives it that little bit of an edge.
So one of the things you might want to consider as well if you're looking at
dresses is the classic kind of t-dress. I know some of you don't know what
that means so these images that I'm showing you here are classic kind of
t-dress styles. Now I always harp on about the t-dress
or wrap dresses that kind of have a fit and flair
because they work for pretty much every type of body type. So
definitely take a look at that kind of style if this is a particular type of
outfit that you like. So thank you for joining me today, I hope
