Here are those style principles that you need to know to defy age.
At age 60, 80, 90 and beyond with elegance.
And stay to the end for my free Defying Age with Elegance Cheat Sheet.
Bonjour Frenchic Ladies, at 61, I want to dress like I still got it.
And I bet you do.
Many of you tell me that you are on a budget and can't afford expensive items.
But I always say that style does not have to be expensive.
Which brings us to the first style principle.
Quality fabrics.
Choose quality fabrics such as silk, cashmere and wool.
These timeless fabrics bring an elevated elegance to your wardrobe and with them, you don't
have to sacrifice comfort for elegance.
And the thing is, quality fabrics last longer.
And let's keep in mind, the more often you wear a piece, the less it has cost you per
wear.
Don't over-focus on price, but focus on the value.
As we know nowadays, there are good quality fabrics at various price points.
When I talk about good quality, I mean that invest in the best quality that you can afford.
Many of you tell me that you want to look modern and current, but without looking that
you're trying too hard.
And this brings us to our next style principle.
Timeless Silhouettes First, learn how to dress for your body shape.
This is fundamental.
On screen now is the link to my free body shape course called Shape Up.
And this course will help you discover what your body shape is.
So go for classic cuts such as a tailored blazer, pencil skirt, straight leg trousers
or even bootcut trousers to give you a plus-en-glace shape.
And of course, you can still give a nod to those trends with a trendy collar or an accessory.
As we get older, we tend to put on a bit of extra weight, but many people make the mistake
of wearing really thick fabrics, which compound the problem.
And this brings us to our next style principle.
Layering Layering adds depth, interest and texture,
perfect for achieving understated sophistication.
For example, a lightweight cashmere over a silk blouse or a blazer over a merino wool
turtleneck.
These classic cuts in elegant and luxurious fabrics give us the edge and elegance, and
we women over 50 can really carry it on.
Many of you tell me that you are worried about color, but there is no need to worry, which
brings us to our next style principle.
Choosing a Neutral Palette First of all, you need to learn which shades
suit the complexion the best.
And don't forget that what used to suit us when we were younger may no longer suit us
now.
Because if your hair color has changed, if you're a bit paler or a bit darker, things
may change.
On screen now is a video where I give you a simple Frenchic color test.
Shades like beige, cream, black, grey, navy are the foundation of an elegant wardrobe.
They blend beautifully together and help you to create various options for your outfits.
Of course, you can still add one or two colors to this capsule.
But stay away from too many colors in one outfit.
Keep in mind the three-color rule.
On your outfit, no more than three colors.
A neutral palette will give you a harmonious sophistication that will elevate your style
in no time at all.
Many of you tell me that you're afraid of looking invisible as you get older, which
brings us to our next style principle, prints.
Choosing prints can be a minefield.
Avoid loud, garish prints because they will overwhelm your silhouette and your overall
look.
Instead, choose simple prints such as stripes, houndstooth, checks.
By choosing the right print, you add interest to your look without being too loud.
I've had so many comments regarding padded coats and jackets in my previous video and
this brings us to our next style principle, an essential signature coat.
My lovely ladies, I get it.
If you live in a very North or Canada, you need, of course, those thick, big and ultra-warm
padded coats.
But many of us live in temperate climates, so this is why my advice is about an essential
coat.
An elegant wool or cashmere coat or tailored trench coat really elevate your style to defy
age with elegance.
What is your best style principle so far?
Let us know in the comments.
Many of you also tell me that you are afraid that your classic style may look boring and
this brings us to our next style principle, accessories.
In order not to look boring, pile on the accessories.
I have heard this advice many, many times and unfortunately, many women follow this
advice to the letter.
So taking the advice of accessorizing, they may start with earrings, oh, that looks nice,
and then a necklace or two, and then maybe a brooch or a few rings, and maybe a hat with
a hairpin.
And little by little, you have too many accessories that overwhelm the overall look and hiding
you in the process.
So just choose a good pair of earrings, for instance, pearl earrings.
And maybe if you have a high neckline like this, you don't need a necklace.
And maybe with this kind of sleeve, you don't need bracelets.
And maybe you just need a couple of rings and maybe no watch.
And then your handbag and your shoes, you don't have to have them too loud.
Just understated, elegant accessories always do the best.
And keep in mind, less is more.
What do you think of that?
Did I explain it well?
Many women tell me, Marianne, wear your pants because I want to be comfortable.
But I always say, and I keep on saying, that style does not have to be uncomfortable.
And this brings us to our next style principle, comfort.
Choose well-made, well-tailored pieces that will make you look elegant and elevated.
For instance, a cashmere sweater with tailored trousers.
They are as cozy as they are elegant.
I am wearing tailored trousers.
I am wearing this blouse.
They are very comfortable, but yet very stylish.
Remember ladies, no crocs, no stocks.
There is an issue above all that many women tell me about.
And it is that as they get older, due to various changes in their life and circumstances, they
are losing some of their confidence.
And this brings us to our next style principle, confidence.
All the style principles in this video will compound to not only help you keep your confidence,
but raise it.
