According to Russian Telegram channels Baza , Mash, and 112, the incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. in the Orekhovo-Borisovo district in a parking lot near a residential building on Yaseneva Street.
The driver managed to drive a few meters before his Kia Sorento exploded. The detonation also damaged nearby vehicles.
The driver was a 56-year-old man. He was hospitalized in critical condition with shrapnel wounds to his legs and a facial fracture.
However, information has surfaced online that the wounded man was Major General Fanil Sarvarov of the Russian Army, head of the Operational Training Directorate of the Russian Armed Forces. Then he lost his life. As the Dozhd TV channel discovered from leaked databases, Sarvarov is indeed registered to a 2013 Kia Sorento—the very model whose explosion was reported by channels close to the security forces. He also owns a quarter of the apartment on Yaseneva Street, near where the explosion occurred.
From 1992 to 2003, Fanil Sarvarov participated in military operations in Chechnya and the Ossetian-Ingush conflict, and in 2015-2016, he took part in the Russian army's operation in Syria.
Russian officials have not yet commented on the cause of the explosion. However, the SHOT Telegram channel reports that they are investigating the possibility of an explosive device being planted under the car, which detonated a few seconds after it started moving.
The Russian Investigative Committee officially confirmed that Major General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car. He was killed in the explosion.
"An explosive device planted under the bottom of a car was detonated this morning. Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, head of the operational training department of the General Staff of the Russian Armed Forces, died as a result of his injuries," the statement read. Based on this fact, the Main Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of Russia for Moscow has opened a criminal case on the fact of "murder committed in a generally dangerous manner."
Various theories regarding the murder are being investigated. One is that the crime was "organized by Ukrainian special services." Russian military experts believe that Sarvarov's death is not only the elimination of a specific general, but also a political and psychological message addressed to Moscow. The implementation of such an assassination attempt in the capital itself, in a heavily guarded area, is seen as an open challenge to the Russian security system. Security measures have been tightened in Moscow, especially in areas close to state and military structures, following the incident. It is reported that the travel routes of high-ranking officers have been changed, and additional security measures have been implemented. The number of police posts in the capital has been increased, and temporary restrictions on traffic have been imposed in some areas.

As reported on the morning of Monday,
December 22nd, a car explosion occurred
in southern Moscow. A high-ranking
Russian general have been killed in the
incident. According to Russian Telegram
channels Baza, MASH, and 112, the
incident occurred around 7:00 a.m. in
the Oraovo Borisovo district in a
parking lot near a residential building
on Yasaniva Street. The driver managed
to drive a few meters before his Kia
Sorrento exploded. The detonation also
damaged nearby vehicles. The driver was
a 56-year-old man. He was hospitalized
in critical condition with shrapnel
wounds to his legs and a facial
fracture.
However, information has surfaced online
that the wounded man was Major General
Fannel Sarvarov of the Russian army,
head of the operational training
directorate of the Russian armed forces.
Then he lost his life. As the DAW TV
channel discovered from leaked
databases, Sarvarov is indeed registered
to a 2013 Kia Sorrento, the very model
whose explosion was reported by channels
close to the security forces.
He also owns a quarter of the apartment
on Yasanva Street near where the
explosion occurred. From 1992 to 2003,
Fannel Sarov participated in military
operations in Cheschna and the Acedian
English conflict. And in 2015 to 2016,
he took part in the Russian army's
operation in Syria. Russian officials
have not yet commented on the cause of
the explosion.
However, the shot telegram channel
reports that they are investigating the
possibility of an explosive device being
planted under the car which detonated a
few seconds after it started moving. The
Russian investigative committee
officially confirmed that Major General
Fanel Sarov was in the car. He was
killed in the explosion. An explosive
device planted under the bottom of a car
was detonated this morning.
Lieutenant General Fanel Sarvarov, head
of the operational training department
of the general staff of the Russian
armed forces died as a result of his
injuries. The statement read, "Based on
this fact, the main investigative
directorate of the investigative
committee of Russia for Moscow has
opened a criminal case on the fact of
murder committed in a generally
dangerous manner. Various theories
regarding the murder are being
investigated.
One is that the crime was organized by
Ukrainian special services.
Russian military experts believe that
Sarov's death is not only the
elimination of a specific general, but
also a political and psychological
message addressed to Moscow. The
implementation of such an assassination
attempt in the capital itself in a
heavily guarded area is seen as an open
challenge to the Russian security
system.
Security measures have been tightened in
Moscow, especially in areas close to
state and military structures. Following
the incident, it is reported that the
travel routes of high-ranking officers
have been changed and additional
security measures have been implemented.
The number of police posts in the
capital has been increased and temporary
restrictions on traffic have been
imposed in some areas. According to
political observers, the assassination
of General Fannel Sarov in a Moscow
explosion indicates that the Russia
Ukraine war has entered a new, more
severe and secretive phase. The war is
no longer limited to the front lines,
but is continuing in a hybrid phase
where special services, sabotage, and
targeted assassinations are also at the
forefront.
An attack by an underwater drone on a
Russian submarine at the Novarosis naval
base could mark the beginning of a new
chapter in the history of maritime
conflicts where Ukraine is once again
demonstrating an innovative approach.
Experts note the explosion occurred just
a few dozen meters from the submarine. A
photograph taken on December the 16th
clearly shows the damage to the pier as
a result of the explosion. The
Vashaveanka class submarine which
carried caliber cruise missiles and
which Ukraine claimed to have destroyed
remains at its original location. Radio
Liberty reports, "It is difficult to
assess the actual damage that may have
been inflicted on the submarine from
satellite images, but as Radio Liberty's
Russian service writes, they allow us to
assume that the drone did not directly
hit the submarine's hull. Be that as it
may, the use of an underwater sea drone
in an operation of this level, whether
with a direct or partial destruction of
a submarine is a new word in the use of
drones in naval warfare. Firstly, the
submarine in Novarasis Bay carries four
caliber cruise missiles which the
Russian Federation is using to fire at
Ukrainian cities. Secondly, an operation
of this type which involves an
underwater naval drone entering an enemy
bay is extremely complex by its very
nature due to the enhanced defense of
the naval base. Experts note the
Novarasis base has powerful defenses.
It's precisely because of the threat of
strikes that Russia has recently avoided
deploying its ships and submarines to
the Black Sea. In this operation, which
has many layers, from the development of
the weapon itself to planning and
preventing information leaks, conducting
such an event is a complex and
challenging undertaking. Ukrainian Navy
spokesman Dmitri Platenuk noted during
the teleathon. Ukraine has been a
pioneer in the massive use of naval
surface drones since the onset of
Russian aggression in 2022. Using a
combination of naval drones and
missiles, Ukraine managed to destroy or
permanently disable a third of Russia's
Black Sea fleet and even launched a
missile strike on the Black Sea fleet
headquarters in Sevastapol. This forced
Russia to relocate the Lion's share of
its ships to Novarasis in the Krasnodar
region and also significantly limit the
fleet's presence on the open sea due to
fears of Ukrainian strikes. The second
innovative point was the use of drones
both surface and underwater in the
attacks on the Kersh bridge. The world
also took note of the first ever downing
of a combat aircraft by a naval drone
which occurred in May 2025. On May the
2nd near Novarasisk, Ukrainian surface
drones armed with R73 air-to-air
missiles destroyed a Russian Su30
fighter jet. And now, for the first time
in history, a submarine has been chosen
as the target for the subsea underwater
drone. Imagine a torpedo with artificial
intelligence choosing its own target,
its own direction of travel and acting
as programmed. That's what an underwater
drone does. Unlike a submarine, it has
no crew. If the crew is lost, it's lost.
If not, well, it won't be. It can
operate in kamicazi mode. It can operate
as a large drone carrying smaller drones
meaning it transports them say from
Odessa or Oakov to Novarasisk throws
them overboard and waits for the
results, observes and acts as a relay
station. Vladimir Zablotski of Defense
Express explains about underwater drones
in an interview with Radio Liberty.
Naval and now underwater drones are
doing their job asymmetrically,
destroying the Russian Black Sea fleet
and preventing Moscow from dominating
the Black Sea. Russia cannot replace its
Black Sea submarines due to the Montro
Convention which restricts wartime
passage of warships and submarines
through the Dardinels and the Bosphorus
as well as the shallow water
restrictions of the vulgar Baltic
waterway. This leaves Moscow with only
one or two submarines capable of
launching caliber missiles.
