Commenting on Donald Trump's statement about the mistake of a "stupid general" who diverted a column of tanks from the Kyiv highway into "muddy fields" and their subsequent destruction, military experts recalled the real reasons behind the collapse of the Russian offensive. A study by the British Royal United Services Institute and an investigation by The New York Times provided a reminder of what actually happened in 2022 . The failure of the Russian offensive on Kyiv is explained by the dynamic resistance of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, the engineering decisions of the Ukrainian command, and the serious mistakes of the Russian army. Ukrainian troops deliberately deprived Russian columns of the ability to advance and maneuver. One of the key decisions was the destruction of the Kozarovitskaya Dam : water from the Kyiv Reservoir flooded the Irpen River floodplain, creating an obstacle to the advancing troops. At the same time, the Ukrainian Armed Forces blew up important bridges. Russian equipment accumulated on the roads, where it became a target for Ukrainian artillery and mobile anti-tank units. What Trump describes as an accidental error by the Russian commander, research reveals as the result of an organized defense and the actions of the Ukrainian army. The preparations for the invasion itself compounded the problems. According to a BBC investigation, Russian troops used outdated maps from the 1960s and 1970s , which omitted some roads and settlements. In some cases, signal flags were used to communicate between units. Due to the operation's secrecy, many commanders received orders only a day before the invasion. Troops faced shortages of fuel, food, and ammunition, while equipment breakdowns plagued them. Ukrainian resistance and Russian supply shortages thwarted Moscow's plans for a quick capture of the capital. Trump, however, claimed that "nothing could have stopped" the Russian convoy, and that the war would have ended in a day if an unnamed general had not ordered them to turn off the road.
