After riding the Kove 450 Rally to the desert and back, it was time to stop guessing and actually look inside the engine.
In this video I perform a full engine health check at 6000 km: oil and coolant inspection, clutch and gearbox check, endoscope look into the cylinder and valves, and a closer look at wear marks you cannot see from the outside.
Is the engine healthy underneath or did the desert leave any marks inside that we can see right now?
I rode this bike almost 5000 kilometers to the desert and back and even though I did two oil
changes I could never see any oil consumption and also the coolant is exactly at the level
where I left it when I had it off. There was also no change in engine noise that kind of stayed
since kilometer 53 when I got the bike but I want to double check some stuff I read about
failing on this bike so today we're going to find out if it's already starting to fail or
if it's not. 1500 kilometers almost 2000 since the last oil change. I don't see one piece
that should show any kind of concern so I'm pretty happy with that.
Yeah no shavings, no chunks of metal, there's a bubble here. That looks even better than I
expected to be honest. Yeah the oil of course got some color to it and maybe I didn't get
everything out now since I did the oil change cold but that looks all good and healthy to me.
I don't really get the point of having that tab here. I mean it does not grip to the shaft at all
once the nut is free spinning then this one is gonna be loose as well.
That's a bit silly or maybe I don't see it. No, basically just a washer and you lock it but that
tab doesn't do much. With all these parts now out let's do a quick inspection. You can see
some grooves here. Yeah you can barely start to feel them. Then we have the inner hub. You can
also start to see some kind of wear to it but also just some visual stuff. Yeah I'm not gonna
bother with measuring all these plates since they look still pretty good and I never had any clutch
issues so I'm just gonna use them the way they came. And then the top one is just off center.
Now I'm trying to find bottom dead center so we can use an endoscope. So this is the piston from
the top down. Now here you can see the actual combustion chamber. We're facing to the intake
side now. I'm going down. There are some slight wear marks to it but then you can also see you
can still see the cross hatching and when I'm moving it up you see top dead center where the
piston meets and there is a bit of build up up there but that's nothing unusual. So that's mostly
the intake side here and now this is the exhaust side. You can actually see the exhaust valve up
here and then you can perfectly see the cross hatching. There are some slight marks to it but
that's something that is completely normal. Here you can see some marks at the exhaust side. The
factory cross hatching is still visible. There are some wear marks on the exhaust side and intake
side just from the piston going up and down but since it didn't consume any oil I don't think it's
anything really deep. So I think that's just normal wear marks from the piston skirt
and yeah that's usually what I see on a single cylinder that has been ran for a while. I know
engine videos are not really flashy but if you watch the video then you see how I convince myself
that an engine is running good or not and there was no play in the bearings in the main bearings
so on. Then also the combustion chamber looked really good, clutch and everything so I don't
see anything on the bottom end or also on the top end that needs any kind of work other than
replacing that shim or that bucket. So once that arrives I'm gonna assemble the bike all back
together and I'm gonna find out if the valves stop moving or if they continue to move and then
there's also a little extra I got myself for Christmas. You're gonna see that in the next video
hopefully and I'm kind of stoked for that and it kind of completes that bike to me so yeah we see
how that turns out. I hope you're gonna have a good time and we're gonna see us in the next one. Peace out!
