Today Lauren and I spent a few days testing a friends gold claim. After over hearing him talk about wanting to down size, I thought it would be a good idea to try finding enough gold to buy the entire claim!
We were hit with a nasty storm which flooded all the rivers making it nearly impossible to find gold. Luckily, we found a side-creek that saved the day!

Today, Lauren and I attempt to buy an
entire claim with the gold we find on
it. The question is, was it enough? Is
this what I think it is? Hello. Today,
we're going to be doing something that
you've never seen before, which is
looking for gold underwater, also known
as gold sniping. Now, unfortunately, I
don't have the entire day today, so it's
not going to be the longest day, but
we're going to find enough gold to make
it worth it.
I don't have a seat belt on.
So, because we didn't have all day to be
here, I had to hurry up and find some
bedrock. Luckily, I knew where some was
and we found our first piece of the day.
The gold in this area can be pretty big,
but like most rivers, the majority of it
is going to be small. But I'm okay with
that because it all adds up.
I found this chunky piece in this little
rust pocket, but I didn't want to damage
it taking it out. So, I beat it out.
After I sucked it up, I didn't find any
more gold for the rest of the day. So,
instead of giving up, I got permission
to hunt on my friend's claim the
following day. And I was really excited.
la.
>> I want to know if I can eat this
mushroom.
It tastes good.
The water is much colder than it was the
last time I was here.
So, I've been on this particular creek
before, but I've never been this far up.
I've always wanted to explore this part,
but obviously claim jumping is bad. But
I have permission today, so hopefully
there's going to be a lot of gold here.
A piece of gold.
So, general rule, when you find gold,
that's a good sign that there could be
gold around. So, it's best to check the
area. I found some rocks that were stuck
in this corner here, and that's also a
good sign. So, we're going to look.
So, I just moved up from that little
spot and I found another piece of gold.
But this one looks like it's stuck. So,
I don't know how big it's going to be,
but we'll pull it out. Hopefully, it's
bigger than my head.
There's actually just a couple pieces in
there.
>> Very nice.
Now, because I am on the bedrock and we
are finding gold, I thought I'd move
downstream just a little bit and punch a
hole through the gravel to see how deep
the bedrock was. Sometimes when you do
this, you find a crack that leads up to
the spot that you were just in.
So, I'm sort of in the middle of
nowhere, but there is a little trail up
here that leads somewhere. And a guy
just rode by on his bike.
Scared me.
Not the biggest piece of gold in the
world, but also not the smallest piece
in the world. I'll still suck it up.
So gold is really heavy and it's going
to sit on the bedrock. So anytime you
see a hole in the bedrock, it's good to
dig it out. I found a hole. I dug it
out. I see two pieces of gold.
So I'm pretty sure I lost this second
piece. When they're really small and
there's a lot of cracks in the bedrock,
they can easily go missing forever.
Luckily, with a little bit of scratching
and some patience.
Yeah, we lost it. So, I'm not actually
on my claim today. I'm on a friend's
claim. And because I haven't been here
before, I just have to walk around and
look for spots that pique my interest.
Ah, look what I just found.
A mask. What's interesting about this is
my friend who owns this claim doesn't
snipe for gold. So, unless this came
from way upstream, we have a claim
jumper on our hands. In fact, I know we
have a clean jumper. I just won't make
the video yet until I catch him. You
heard that right. We do have a clean
jumper around, but luckily he didn't
take this piece right here.
I don't know if you can see it, but I'm
working this thin little channel here. I
just found some lead AND MORE GOLD.
SO, THE GOLD I'M FINDING today is fairly
small, and I kind of blame that on not
really knowing this claim very well. As
a rule I made up, is you got to spend at
least 40 hours on a creek before you can
understand where the bigger bits are
going to be. Now, sometimes the big
nuggets are in spots that you wouldn't
expect, but most of the time, the river
does a good job organizing the heavy
stuff from the light stuff. So, in and
around 40 hours of looking, you'll just
start to see where the bigger stuff will
end up.
All right. So, what I think I'm going to
do is I'm going to ask the claim owner
if I can come out for one more day and
I'll blame it on on weather or something
like that because I am finding gold
here, but I feel like we can still do
better, especially the more upstream I
explore. And if he says yes and I find
good gold on it, what I want to do, I
want to ask and see if he is willing to
sell me the claim. And what I think will
be even more fun is if we buy it with
the gold that we found on it. I don't
know. I just think that would be a fun
video idea. Buying a claim with the gold
you found on it. I also just found
another piece of gold right here.
Instead of calling it quits just yet, I
poked around for a bit longer and
eventually settled in on the spot here
that looked a little bit better.
All right, it's been about half an hour
later. It's actually starting to get
dark now. I got here late, too, so I
didn't really have a full day. Working
along this thin little crack, I see two
gold piffs.
All right, so this is actually the
biggest piece of gold in the entire
world. So, please comment how impressed
you are.
And because we just found the biggest
piece of gold in the entire world,
there's a chance there could be small
gold nearby. So, we're going to follow
the crack deeper and see what we find.
So, I discovered a quartz vein. And yes,
you can find gold in quartz, but that's
not why I like this one in particular.
It's because quartz is way weaker than
the surrounding bedrock. So I often find
that as it weakens it turns into a
crevice and gold gets stuck in it. So I
decided to beat it.
The second biggest piece of gold in the
world.
I apologize in advance for how dark it
is.
For the remainder of my time here, I
really didn't find much except for
little pieces of gold, some bits of
lead, and maybe one more flake of gold.
Ultimately, I decided to leave because I
was getting really cold
and clumsy and knew that we would
probably be able to come back for day
two. All right. So, that was day one
hopefully of two. Now, we didn't do
incredible, but we also didn't do
garbage because we found gold. And
gold's not garbage at all. But in the
time that we had, we did find actually a
fair amount of gold. So, I think on day
two, hopefully we can do day two, we
should be able to find a bit more
because we'll have more time in the day.
Now, just like the last few videos, I'm
not going to weigh this gold yet. I'm
going to weigh the gold at the very end
of the video. So, you either can skip
ahead or you can sit there and watch my
video because I appreciate it. But yeah,
so in case you guys didn't hear me
earlier on the GoPro, I'm going to ask
the claim owner if we can do day two and
then at the end of that day, hopefully
if we do well, I'm going to make him an
offer and see if I can buy the claim off
them because I am looking for new claims
and I've always sort of wanted to buy a
claim with the gold I found on it. I
don't know. Worth a try. Anyways,
hopefully I'll see you in a second.
Tada! Day two. We have another day to go
look for gold. only this time we brought
Lauren the the shovel murderer. And
today we're going to be looking for gold
like we did yesterday. Only hopefully
today we'll find more. All right, so
like always, something I don't really
show on camera is getting acclimatized
to how freaking cold the water is. Takes
me a few minutes, but within no time
I'll be numb and I'll be good to go.
I want to go home.
The worst part is your face. Your face
gets really cold and Yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
Yeah. Yeah.
>> So, yesterday where we were sniping was
downstream and today we are much further
upstream. And the first thing I've
noticed is how much exposed bedrock
there was, but it was all quite smooth.
Smooth is okay when there's crevices
around, but I wasn't really seeing
anything just yet.
I did find this drop off zone here that
had some fractured bedrock, which Oh my
god, a pine cone. Um, there was
fractured bedrock here, which I found
interesting. And at the bottom of that,
we did find our first piece of gold,
which was nice.
But after digging around the spot for a
little while, I realized we have to keep
on moving if we want to find the best
spot in the world.
So, Polly just found four pieces of
gold. He's doing his thing. It's
absolutely freezing in the river.
>> Should I throw it?
So, I just found a whole bunch of lead,
which is a good sign that the heavies
are dropping there. And you also could
find lead around. And I am finding a
little bit of gold with that lead. But
I'm following this this down slope and
just working away trying to get to the
very bottom. Hopefully, there'll be
something nice at the bottom. But if
not, we'll keep looking.
So, Polly, are your lips really numb?
>> Yeah.
>> How numb?
>> I'm having trouble holding this.
people would pay good money for those.
>> Yeah,
that was our first piece of gold in like
45 minutes or so.
>> Slow day so far. So, I definitely put
pressure on myself to find a lot of
gold, but the truth is during this time
of year, it's just very difficult. Not
because of the water temperature,
because I'm generally okay with that,
but you're working up so high, you're
just in spots where the gold doesn't
really get trapped.
Make sure to turn the camera off. I just
scratched out a little rock and there's
like four pieces sitting right there.
Now, you're not going to really be able
to see this, but due to refraction, I
can see it really well with my mask. So,
just pretend you could see it and it's
the most amazing thing ever. And you
comment really nice comments and you
make me feel better.
I wasn't planning on saying this, but
the claim owner actually gave us a whole
week to go explore this place. So,
Lauren and I decided to come back the
following day.
>> Loser. See you later, nerd.
>> I'm coming.
>> Now, we would have tried just a little
bit harder that day if we only knew how
much rain would hit us overnight.
We actually got so much rain, towns on
the mainland were flooded and I
developed a stream in my basement. I
tried fleing it, but I didn't find any
gold. Luckily, Lauren and I are the type
of people who don't get stopped easy. We
located a tributary on his claim that
might give us one last chance to find
enough gold to hopefully buy the entire
claim.
>> I'm slowly but surely. Okay, the water
level is actually really high for this
little creek. We're going to have to
hike around most of it. The spots where
we couldn't hike around, we just had to
help each other get through the main
flow.
So, this little creek was very difficult
to work. You would find a spot, get
under there, realize it wasn't really a
good spot in the first place, and then
move on.
But because I'm so talented, I was able
to find a little bit of gold. However, I
had too much trouble trying to film it
because of how fast the water was
moving. But that's going to have to do.
The waters are way too violent right now
to safely be doing this. So, I think
it's time I pack up and head to New
Zealand. What do you think?
You
dropped me.
>> Moving on, Lauren and I slowly made our
way upstream where I managed to find a
little bit more gold.
>> I ended up deciding it's just going to
be quicker if I ran upstream to have a
peek before bringing Lauren up. And I'm
glad I did because otherwise I don't
think I would have found this spot.
>> I don't really know if you can hear me.
But I traveled upstream a ways. Lauren
is still downstream. So I can't stay up
here for too long. I just found a bunch
of gold under this rapid. I can't bring
the camera with me because it's just too
violent. I mounted the GoPro to this
stick here because I thought this would
be the best place to put it and it was.
This feeder underwater
still a nice nugget.
So, I'm working right here and there's a
crack that goes in there. Unfortunately,
I won't be able to work directly under
there today. I spent maybe 20 more
minutes looking around, but ultimately
decided to call it today, tomorrow, the
next day. I don't know. I want to go to
New Zealand now.
>> I think I'm calling it quits.
>> Yeah. Okay. Back at the truck. I don't
know where my gold pan is. So, I'm going
to quickly eat my chicken and then we'll
use that to dump my the gold out of
there and see what we got today. And
when we get home, add it to what we
found on the other days. I'm impatient.
I just took my chicken out.
Okay, that looks good. Yes, there was a
couple chunky bits that I found today
near the top that uh that were chunky,
which is good. Turn on my flash here. I
don't know if you can see that, but
yeah, we got a rusty bit. A couple nice
chunkies with some pieces of chicken.
I'm pretty exhausted to be honest. I'm
I'm totally done. Uh I'm going to go get
Lauren. We're going to go back to the
house. I'm going to call the claim
owner. I'm going to weigh the gold, call
the claim owner, and see if it's enough
to get the claim. I have my doubts, but
we'll see. All right, so here is them.
Their gold we found. Not nearly as much
as I was hoping for, but I worked hard
for this. It's sort of expected because
this time of year there's not a lot of
places you could go, but that's okay. We
didn't get skunked. There's a few
coarser bits in here that tell us
there's a vein where the gold is coming
from nearby, but maybe that's a
summertime mission. This is the smallest
piece of gold we found. And if you were
to make this a thousand times bigger, it
might just make a decent nugget. So, my
concern here is that this may not be
enough gold to make a respectable offer
for the claim. However, with the price
of gold being so high, it might just do.
Let's wait up, come up with a number,
and give our friend a ring. All right,
doing this with one hand because I am so
special.
Put that on there. Make sure I tear it.
All right. Moment of 500
ounces. There's some garbage in there,
but 2.20
g. So that is4
maybe $450 Canadian. So around $300
American.
It's not terrible. It's not the
greatest, but let's see if that works.
I'm nervous.
>> Hello.
>> Hey. How you doing?
>> Hey, not too bad. How's it going,
Paulie?
>> Uh, I'm doing all right. Um, yeah.
Thanks for letting me work on the claim
there for those days. That was really
kind of you. I didn't find a lot of
gold, but I I found a little bit. You
were you saying something about you
trying to downsize some of your claims
or something?
>> Yeah, I'm trying to look at zeroing in
on keeping just a few ones I know do
really well. And uh but yeah, I'm
looking to downsize a little.
>> Okay. And is this claim one of those
claims you that you do really well on or
that you're trying to get rid of?
>> Uh it's one that uh I think I would
consider letting her go.
>> Okay. Um cuz like I I don't know for I
don't want to lowball you or anything,
but I I do want to make an offer on it.
Um I found like
roughly $500 worth of gold on it. I know
you said I could keep the gold, but I
figured like I could give you the gold
and maybe I could get the claim. But I
mean, if it's if it's too low of an
offer, I can always add gold to it or
maybe, you know, give you a massage on
the river or or something. What do you
What do you think?
>> Well, that sounds like a pretty good
deal. Um, maybe we could throw in a
little bit of a a lesson on sniping.
>> Okay, the water's cold. I'll say that.
>> I I'm used to that.
>> Okay. Okay. That was um Do do you mind
if your your voice is on video?
>> I don't mind at all.
>> Good. Okay. I was like that was like my
final worry. Okay. Cool. Sweet. Um
you sure it's not a huge claim as you
know, but it does have that tributary on
it too. And I feel like if I spend more
time on it, especially in the summertime
when the water drops, it could have good
potential. And you are welcome to go on
that claim anytime you would like.
Sounds like a great deal.
>> Wow. Okay. I have a toy Lamborghini. Do
you want that?
>> That's a good throw in.
>> Just kidding. It's fine. Cool. All
right. Okay. So, I'm just going to
finish my edit here and then uh Yeah,
maybe you could tour me around the area
there and show me where you found gold
before.
>> I can do that for sure.
>> Cool. I'll call you back.
>> All right. Thanks, Molly.
>> Okay. Okay. See you. Bye.
>> Bye.
That surprisingly went way better than I
thought. I thought I actually had a
backup plan. If he said no or something,
I would have been like, "Oh, I'm just
kidding anyway. What would you say?" You
know, and I'll give him a bigger offer
and then maybe come back to it and kind
of make that into a series. But no,
sounds like we have a new claim. But I'm
not going there until the water drops
because there's no point right now. I
will have to phone him back and let him
know that I can't give him the gold for
the claim until I'm done the year- end
video cuz I do that every year and then
then I'll give him the gold. But yeah,
that's good
