Get ready to spin into Christmas! This Christmas morning, chat show King Graham Norton swaps the Big Red Chair for our This Morning sofa - as he reveals what’s in store for the Wheel of Fortune festive special.
Graham Norton is joining us now, but before we start, obviously, you like to make the
A-listers very comfortable. You give them their favourite drink. We want to do the same
for you. It's Christmas. How does that sound?
It sounds great.
You like a bit of fizz, don't you?
Bit of fizz? Well, it's Christmas. Bit of fizz.
It's Christmas. Let's see.
Is this all we've got?
Graham Norton, you look empty-handed there, and we didn't want to scrimp out, so I know
you like champagne. It might be Prosecco, but there you go.
Thank you so much.
Merry Christmas.
Merry Christmas to you.
We didn't scrimp.
So festive.
Oh, thank you very much.
You look stunning, Josie.
Lovely, Josie.
I can't get over it.
Well, thank you very much.
I can't get over it.
Graham, has anyone ordered something really strange on the show?
Drinking?
Yeah.
Have you ever gone, like, what is Tom Cruise drinking?
Well, I won't say who.
No, say who.
No, I can't. But there's an actress, and you think she's drinking champagne, but it's mostly vodka.
Are you serious?
Yeah, it's mostly vodka with a little bit of champagne on top.
So she has got a little bit of champagne.
I wonder who that is.
I know.
You'll never guess. You'll never guess.
Wheel of Fortune's back.
Yes. Such a happy thing.
It's so, so good. It's the sort of show that you just want to play along with.
Was you a fan before you saw it?
You know what, it's one of those things, even if you're not a fan, I always think it's one of those games.
If you're flicking channels and you see the puzzle, you think, oh God, now I've got to wait and see what this is.
Because you're instantly in.
I'm in.
So it's a great game, and I think what they've done so brilliantly is they've just cast a brilliant,
like the loveliest people play this game.
And some of them, you know, they win serious money.
And it's the best feeling in the world, opening that envelope and going, you've won $35,000, you've won $50,000.
And it's life-changing for some of these people, isn't it? It's like, literally.
I mean, you see them, because it's fun. Because we're playing a game, it's fun.
And then in that final round, suddenly, oh, it's deadly serious.
And often they'll have some friends or a loved one in the audience, and you can see them looking at them,
thinking that this will solve so many problems.
And it's not rigged, because you can't fix that wheel.
One day it could be your best friend, the next day, your worst enemy.
It is weird, because this is the Christmas special, obviously, we're doing.
And everyone's, you know, it's all bunting and everything.
Yeah, wheel not feeling so festive. Wheel not a fan of working over the holidays.
I love giving a personality to another object. And when you do a show like that, you can't help it, can you?
But also, it really does. Like, yeah, there's three people. It'll take against someone.
It'll just go, I'm really sorry, you're bankrupt again. I can only apologize on behalf of the wheel.
Do you like being a quiz show host, or do you prefer your own little show, sitting down, having a nice little chat?
Because you're basically doing the same thing, really, aren't you?
Kind of. I mean, what's nice about playing a game is that's what you're doing.
Like, I'm playing a game now. We all know why we're here. We're spinning this thing.
We're going to solve some puzzles. Someone's going to win some money, hopefully.
Yeah.
Whereas the chat show, some nights, it's hard to explain why we're all there.
Why are we all here?
But it seems to work every time, doesn't it?
We're lucky. We are lucky. I think most weeks, it goes better than others.
You know, most weeks, it goes pretty well.
And I think also because we've been on the air for a long time now.
So most of the guests, they've either done it before, or they've at least seen it.
So they have more of an idea of what to expect.
Isn't that nice, Graham, that you have that, you know, albeit not superficial, but albeit quite transient relationship.
You get a relationship with people that you see, and then you see again,
and you get to talk about different parts of their lives.
Yeah, it is.
People have probably grown up with that show.
Yeah, no, it is strange that, you know, I don't know these people. We're not friends.
And yet sometimes when I go, and do you know anyone here, they're looking at me,
well, I know you because I've been on this show eight times.
And I'm thinking, oh, yeah, I suppose you do.
You do.
I have met you a lot.
Not only that, you just sold Taylor Swift just there.
Didn't she invite you to her wedding? Come on.
You are friends.
When someone invites you to a wedding, you are mates.
Yeah, but then the next day, she did invite Greg James.
So I feel like...
You and Greg, top table.
I feel like...
You and Greg and the Kelseys, that's it.
Yeah, me and Greg James are going to be at the other end of the football stadium.
Do you know what? I'm not being funny.
Is that her? Is that...
You have to go, though. You have to keep on to her PR.
Oh, we are going.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
I mean, yeah.
You have to do that.
When you book that show, do you have a good sort of little idea
as to how that chemistry is going to work?
Like, do you go, oh, let's put so-and-so and so-and-so
because that will be good?
Or is it a bit more scattergun?
I mean, it's some week.
On a good week, we get to choose.
We kind of go, oh, yes, that would be lovely.
You know what it's like.
Most weeks, it's like, who?
Who is there?
Great, shove them on.
And you hope.
I mean, there's some people.
You know, Miriam's been on a lot.
Miriam Margulies.
Oh, she's great.
You can't expose her to every couch.
You know, I feel some couches would not cope well.
But she was just on, and she was on with kind of, you know,
knockabout people.
She was on with Glenn Close.
Really good episode.
Nicola Coughlin.
So, you know, they are unshockable.
It's like inviting people around to dinner every week.
Oh, absolutely.
You go, where shall I put the tablecloth?
Where shall I put them?
Well, no, actually, that is so true.
It is like when you invite people around to your house,
you think, oh, dear God, who can we have with them?
Miriam's going to be eating onions in the corner.
What's so good about you, Graham, is you listen.
You just sit back and you just let it happen.
It's such...
I can't do it.
I struggle with listening.
But you just get it and you're just so good with everybody.
Well...
Do you like people?
No, I do.
I am interested.
And it's the same with Wheel of Fortune, you know,
because actually meeting those people is as interesting
because they all have a story, all of something.
So I do genuinely believe that.
But the nights when the show goes best are those nights
when I can sit back.
And I love it when the couch starts talking to each other,
you know, and they find fun in each other.
That's just the best.
Listen, we know you've...
We can't believe it, you've ditched a real tree
for an artificial tree this year.
Are you actually joking?
Here's the thing, right?
Who have you become?
For decades, we had real trees.
And then last year, we put up this real tree.
You know, there's holes in it.
Yeah.
The branches don't hold the ornaments.
Doing the...
Like to be like, you know, never again.
We're doing an artificial tree.
To anyone thinking of doing that,
it's just differently difficult.
It's no easier.
It's still difficult.
It's just the same amount of work.
So with that in mind...
Okay, so this is for you.
And you can take it home and you can put it straight onto your...
Can I...
Yeah, go for it.
Go for it.
If it's the pine spray, I'll be so happy.
No, it's not the pine spray.
Oh, it is.
It's something like that.
Well...
White winter fir...
You hang it on your Christmas tree.
Oh, Santa's got...
This is what I was thinking of.
Is that what you wanted?
This is what I wanted.
It smells like a real Christmas tree.
It doesn't, but...
But a real...
That smells like a services toilet.
Let me have a smell.
Oh, have a lovely Christmas.
Oh, I love it.
It's pine.
It's beautiful.
You know what you put in the toilet.
It's lovely.
And now flush.
This man is going to stay with us for a while.
Thank you, Graham.
It's lovely to see you.
Thank you.
Thanks for my drink.
Merry Christmas to everybody.
Merry Christmas.
And the Wheel of Fortune is back on Christmas special.
It's a Christmas...
I can't even speak.
It's a Christmas special.
It's going to be wonderful.
It's this Saturday.
I've really done you well with this promotion.
7.30 on ITV1 and ITVX.
And if you've already forgot what day that is,
like I have, that's two days from now.
