Hello travel buddies. Kangaroo Island, the third largest island in Australia,
famous for its abundant wildlife and stunning natural landscape. We only have two days,
less than 48 hours, and there are over 167 attractions on the island, 30 major ones.
And I'm going to get you all 30 major ones.
But the rule is, firstly, we have to enjoy it. We cannot rush in and out. Secondly,
we cannot rush anyway because Ying gets distressed easily if we rush him. And thirdly,
we have to get to at least two guided activities. And fourthly, we cannot sacrifice our mealtimes.
Okay. Let's go. It's now eight o'clock and we drove one and a half hours from Adelaide
all the way to Cape Jervis. And we're going to board a sailing ferry. We will be on the
ferry for 45 minutes, but unfortunately it's quite windy today and it will be a bumpy trip.
It's already 20 past 10. Now we're going to go to
Kingscote, our next destination. Kingscote is the main town of Kangaroo Island.
It's 45 minutes away from Peninsular. It's now 19 past 11. So this is Kingscote jetty. Wow.
We can only stay here until 12 PM. One of the rules is we can't skip the meals.
Look at those birds standing like soldiers. Yeah. We decided not to have any lunch here.
Okay. So you don't want to have any lunch here. Because of the bumpy sea.
We have more time to enjoy this jetty. Beautiful jetty. No loss, no gain. This is beautiful.
So it's almost 12. Oh yeah. It's 12 o'clock. So we're on the way to our next destination and
that is the guided activity with a fixed time. So we can't be late. But do you know how long
we have to travel there? An hour. I guess I will see you there. So after one hour drive,
we're here at the Kelly Hill Cave. We booked our guided tour at 1.15. So now it's one o'clock.
So Ying didn't know that I didn't actually really buy the tickets. I tried to buy the Kangaroo
Island pass here because we can't buy that online. And this cave is a must see. Underground maze
with limestone skin holes and chambers going on for miles. And another thing is I need to
go to toilet very very urgently. Thank you very much. I've purchased the Kangaroo Island pass.
I thought I couldn't purchase it here. The ticket is much less expensive if you purchase Kangaroo
Island pass. Such a good deal. It's actually the fire itself that helps. I don't know whether you
know that in 2019 December, there was a fire in Kangaroo Island and half of the island was swallowed
by the fire. And look at this. Wow, this doesn't look very good, right? According to the guide,
the fire actually makes everything charcoal and the charcoal is fertilizer itself. Look,
the charcoal fertilizer. So the seeds actually grow better in the soil. The tall trees have been
removed so the seeds can actually get more sunshine and then they actually grow better.
So basically there's no loss, no gain. There are trees being burnt which is sad but also there will
be new trees coming out. The nature is amazing, isn't it? I like this trail. Wow, we have to go down
this deep staircase to access the cave. The guide said the cave was formed because of the rain water
gushing down, not because of the seawater. And it's better for you not to touch them because
the oil can leave a black mark on your skin. And also they're very delicate. They're like heritage
for the nature. That stone is transparent. So this is limestone. This is quite transparent.
And there's no echo in this cave because limestone has a lot of bubbles in there according to the
guide. Interesting. It's very light as well. Echo! No echo at all. You see that? It's like a standing
soldier. It looks like a little lady. Natural sculptures. Miniature humans. Mini. By the way the
temperature here is 16 degrees while the temperature outside is 25 degrees. And the more I stayed here
the more I felt cold. There's going to be moments of complete darkness. This little chamber was
converted to a conference hall within a minute. People are sitting in front of this beautiful
lighting. Human beings don't exist yet. Australia is currently one part of the mega continent.
The lighting show. Wow. It's amazing. We've been traveled back billions of years ago. So I guess
I'm going to go back to the reality. It's two minutes to 2.50. I plan to finish this attraction
a quarter past two and then we can go to Little Sahara which is 30 minutes away.
I'm still here. I gave up rushing myself but we may go somewhere which is outside of my plan
and that could make it easier for me to achieve my goal to visit all 30 attractions. That's what
Ian suggested. So let's go. Bunker Hill lookout. I'm now sitting on the floor. Look at this view.
It's called the Influencer's Road. We're here at the car park of the Admiral Arch. Look at here.
That is literally an attraction. You can't climb to the top of the lighthouse anyway
but this is an attraction. So we've been here right? Tick. How can we access the arch from here?
If you want romantic hair, come to Kangaroo Island. So this whole area is called Flinders
Chase. If Flinders Chase is only one attraction and I can only take one attraction right? But no,
a lot of attractions in Flinders Chase are major attractions like the First Seal
lookout and also the Admiral Arch and a remarkable rock.
There's another lookout.
Did you see them? Okay I'll use my camera now. Look at the waves crashing.
By the way, where is the arch? We have been walking for a long time.
Look at the wave. Where is the seal? I can't see anything.
Oh yes yes. Which one is it? That one? Oh oh oh I can't see it. Oh yes yes yes. See?
Bushfire last resort refugee. It's wet here.
I'll let you know what I saw. This is the arch. This is the arch. Oh my goodness how beautiful.
I guess this is where you have to stop. This is somewhere you can't access. I can smell something.
Fish. Specifically dead fish. If you can find five seals, I think that's definitely one.
Oh yes I see that one. That's a seal. Oh okay that's a big one just right under my face.
There's another one here. See? Oh yes here. It's a bit dark there but yeah definitely
we found five seals. I have to go because where is my face? Okay see you. Okay so we're leaving.
We came here at 3.40pm and now it's 4.30pm. It's almost one hour. Definitely not my plan
but I'm so happy. I enjoyed it. That's rule number one right? We ticked off three attractions.
This is Remarkable Rock. 12 minutes away. Now we have to walk to the Remarkable Rocks.
That's another must-see spot. Did you see the Remarkable Rock?
Did you see the Remarkable Rock? Welcome to Remarkable Rocks. Sitting high on ancient rock.
Remarkable Rocks. Remarkable Rocks. Now this is the test of your imagination.
What does it look like? One, two, three. Elephant. Good on you. How about that one? One, two, three.
Let's climb. Goodness who stole my ice cream? It's 5.30pm. We stayed here for another one hour.
I didn't even know what I have done. Oh my goodness. Our next guided activity is two hours later.
We're tortured about whether we go to Little Sahara or we go back to our Airbnb.
We were talking and was tortured about where to go from Remarkable Rock. Whether we should go back
to our Airbnb which is 56 minutes away or we should go to Little Sahara which is 65 minutes
away. And guess where I am? This is another attraction okay. This is a minor attraction
though not major attraction. It's called Flinders Chase Visitor Center. That's a restaurant. It's
closed 3pm from Monday to Friday. We can't have anything in there however the toilet is open and
we can appreciate this scenery right? Most importantly we can use the table facility
here to cook our dinner. Best thing is from here to our next destination is only four minutes.
Four minutes. By the way what's the time now? 6.30pm. We have one hour. That's more than enough.
Let's go to have some. Can you imagine in this remote area I can have hot pot. Look this is a
self-heating pot we bought from supermarket. Chinese supermarket and smells so nice. Wow.
This is a luxury in this remote area. I'm here at the last attraction of today.
Hanson Bay Wildlife Sanctuary. And I just saw two kangaroos fighting with each other. That was
precious. It's super cold. So our group is waiting. We're going to see more and hopefully we could see
the sunset. The guide just introduced how koala mating gave birth to the baby. They would stay
with mom's chest to suck milk and in the meantime they will eat mom's poop to get themselves toxic
so they can't start eating the leaves because the leaves are toxic. And after three months they will
actually grow on mom's back so we call them back baby and for another three months or they will
still have milk and leaves but more leaves less milk. After they're two years old they would leave
their mom and not see their mom anymore. Koalas are not living in groups. We could only see like
one koala per tree. If you see two they're mating or they're fighting. I just heard a cruel thing
about koala mama. If the baby is sick they will get rid of them. Now we are going to find some
other animals. I saw some kangaroos running over here. Here you go. That's a kangaroo. What I can see is the
red soil and sunset. It's pretty. Do you know what's that for? One, two, three. Do you have answer?
I'll let you know. I just heard guide said that's for capturing the cats. There are 15 000 cats on
kangaroo island. They're not from outside. They're just domestic cats going wild and they do so much
damage. They will take baby koala, baby poison, baby everything and eat them or play with them
until they die. They're just mean. So basically these cats are captured and then they will be shot.
So are you a cat person or dog person? Let me know. We're going to sit in this little van to go somewhere.
They're loyal to their life partners. So if their life partners die they will not mate with any other
geese. Sorry. So it's now 8 30 and this finish at 9. I think the sunset is about 9. Okay another
very interesting thing about kangaroo. I have known kangaroo for pretty much how many years.
I never know that the kangaroo mom can hold the pregnancy if there's a drought and if the
condition is not very good up to 11 months. So the baby doesn't die but the baby doesn't grow in her
belly and after 11 months here you go continue to grow. Wow what a super normal ability.
Okay going back. So everyone has this red flashlight. So this is the amazing part of this
journey. After sunset there's a reason that they use red flashlight because we don't want to scare
the animals. Look. So we think that's the male chasing up the female. Female koalas they just
hate mating. It's very painful and the male koalas will never cherish them. According to
the guide it's like raping. That's why female koalas really hate this. A lot of times male
koalas will chase them up. Female koalas will actually stand on the very fragile branch. So
male koalas will wait for them at the root of this tree until they come down. Or if the branch is
really really fragile the male koala would actually break the branch and get the female koala.
We're going back to our airbnb. We're going to check in at around quarter to ten.
And the host of the airbnb is so nice and he said we can go in at 2 pm and guess what time it is
now. It will take us around 30 minutes if we drive at 100 or 80 but we can only drive at 60 because
of the wallabies and kangaroos crossing the road like if it's a shopping mall. I guess even though
this is not an attraction but driving at night in kangaroo island is a must-do experience for you
because that anxiety and the worry and that excitement is something that you cannot get
from anything else. Yeah we've arrived Buddha beach house. According to the guideline the key
safe is at the back veranda. Is it this one? Ah look okay and open the door.
Good morning. We went to bed 11 o'clock after we cleaned ourselves and there's a room tour
as promised. This is where you go in and firstly you get your key from this very vintagey
key box and you just get in. Straight away you see laundry, this is toilet
and in is busy clearing things that make sure we're not leaving anything behind.
This is the kitchen area very simple like cottage kitchen and coming in we see a bookshelf
and also a living room but we didn't have time to watch tv or enjoy this lounge. The window
with a very modern window blinds and this is the first bedroom. Picture of the Buddha
that's a theme isn't it? And this is the narrow room yeah very small that's it. So we have a very
busy day today because this is the last day. Well yesterday was the first day well we have two days
I'm actually going through the dry bush and in front of me is the river. We're on the way to
the seal bay and we stopped by the river. By the way this is Vivong bay and it is an attraction
itself so technically one attraction ticked. We're on the way to the seal bay. So we're still on the
way to seal bay but I really want to come in to see little Sahara. It's only like a thousand
meters away from our airbnb even though we don't have time for the activity. Our seal bay activity
is at 10 o'clock at least I stopped by and then we're still visiting it. Oh it's a naturally
formed sand dune. Little Sahara is like a desert dropped in the heart of the bush which is quite
quite strange and weird and how come this sand dune is formed here huh? We have to sign in
to access these areas. I think they're all for the sand slide. Little Sahara tick. I'm cheating right?
I'm here at the seal bay. You can see there are two seals already. We're gonna be here for two
hours because the seals kangaroo island you can't skip them. You have to enjoy them fully thoroughly.
So we're on the beach and you can hear the baby seal making noises.
So it could be a reunion there. You need a mum calling and that pup getting excited.
That pup's getting excited. It might be a reunion.
So they'll touch noses. She'll be smelling her pup.
That's how they do it. So first they call and then at the final test is smelling. Everyone
says that they're kissing but they're actually smelling each other to see if it's really mum
and pup. Oh really? Yeah if it's not her pup then she'll likely bare her teeth and tell them to go away.
Oh wow. So after seal bay there's no hairstyle. So this is a visitor center. I'm going to show you
the seal fur. So this is fur seal and this is the seal in seal bay. So they have like thinner fur.
So after 22 minutes drive from seal bay we're here. We haven't been having suitable meals for
the last whole day I think. So here we are. It's a small town called Pondana.
Look at this beautiful flower. It's a blessing to actually have this kind of food
in Kangaroo Island. The gravy roasted beef and chips, seafood plate
with salad. Let's dive in and finish it in six seconds shall we?
Pondana museum. We're not going there. Two o'clock. It's closed. We'll probably have a look at this
shed. Here's a fake cow. Moo. Ian is checking this trench motor. The man said we will be on the next
boat love and in two years we will have our own farm. I think the background story is the Australians
who had served six months or more in the armed forces were eligible to apply for the war service
land settlement scheme. I planned to go to the Emirate eucalyptus distillery. It's the only
factory that's producing the eucalyptus oil. I think that's special. We were on the way there
and you have already seen how off-road the road condition is and Ian was not happy
to actually drive all the way on this kind of road
so we changed our plan and now we're going to go to the lighthouse. So guess where I am?
It's American river. So plans changed. We were going to the lighthouse on the screen
and then the google map informed us if we arrive the lighthouse after one hour of drive
we only have 30 minutes to explore because the lighthouse is closed at 4 p.m.
So Ian is like no no we have to go somewhere nearer so we can actually have more time
to explore. So here we are American river. It's actually in our initial plan as well.
It's called American river. There's no river. The town was named after a group of Americans.
They settled here and doing some fishing. This is a peaceful small town and you can actually see a
lot of birds here. Extensive bird life and if you're lucky you can see the dolphins. You can
observe the boats. Very very peaceful. But most importantly you can taste the fresh oysters and
lobster prawns. This is the price list. Oh look wow. What a beautiful dining area.
A boat of shrimp. Cheers. Six oysters. I don't eat it but cheers for you. We can't access the
lobster farm. We can't see it. The oyster farm? Yeah oyster farm sorry. No we can't go out the boat.
A boat of lobster. Cheers. Oh you can hire a kayak here. Just call that number.
Oh that's the boat. Hey you want to join me? Hey I guess this is the last stop of my kangaroo island
48 hour trip. We're waiting to board the ferry and the weather is superb. We have the privilege
to experience the boarding. Remember when we came here we were asked to get off the car
but then I think the staff just told us to stay. Hey travel buddies. I'm on the decking area of
this ferry back to Adelaide and you can see we're almost there. So I calculated how many places I
have been to during last two days. Less than 48 hours on kangaroo island. That's insane.
But to count some places in we have to bend the rules like little Sahara like Harriet river
because we didn't really enjoy the activity there. We rushed in and we rushed out. I think the plan
was working for us because our goal is to get to as many places as we could. Still we enjoyed
the whole trip. So what do you think? Can you challenge me to visit more places while still
enjoying the major ones? Let me know. I guess I will see you next. Bye!
