This dog survived 5 YEARS on the I-5 Freeway — starving, malnourished, missing fur over most of his body, and dying when we found him. Most people drove past. Some tried to help and couldn’t. For years… he kept surviving.
🐾 His name is Coco.
A senior dog with teeth completely filed down from years of fear, stress, and survival. His skin was raw from chronic flea infestation. His body tells a story of long-term suffering. We searched 5 DAYS | 41 HOURS
👣 On foot 🚗 By car 🌡️ Thermal drone & thermal monocular 🌾 Miles of orchards and rough terrain At 31½ hours, we finally saw him — and failed. We regrouped. Changed plans. Tried again.
Final night. BBQ turns on. Coco appears. We held our breath… ➡️ HE WENT IN.
After 5 years on the freeway, Coco was finally safe. He slept 25½ hours. He ate. He drank. The next morning — he wagged his tail. At the vet: anemia and low electrolytes. Now he’s resting. Healing. Safe.
💔 We’ve saved many animals — but Coco is a true survivor story.
👉 If you ever saw Coco or tried to help him over the years, we’d love to hear from you and let you know he’s finally safe.

5 years. That's how long this boy has
been surviving out here off the I5. No
one could catch him. He's been running
for years, but lately he's slowed down,
malnourished, covered in mange, miles of
open terrain, orchards, nowhere to hide.
We tracked him a couple days ago with
baby bobcat.
And then he comes to the field behind
here and he gets food where we have a
feeding station and a trap.
Unlock it. So I get the chicken.
>> So nerve-wracking.
>> Might know a trap.
Leash him. We should We should almost
>> here. He comes out of the orchards.
>> Wind's blowing this way. Going to get to
that corner.
>> We saw him across the street right
there.
>> Comes to the McDonald's at the extra
mile gas station that it's joined by and
he eats there. He changes the times
because he's deteriorating and dying and
he's weak. He's old. He's sick. So today
was very abnormal. At 11:18, he came on
a trail cam over here where our hotel
we're staying at.
So, I want to see if there's fresh track
since it rained, which is good for us.
And so, now we can try to see where
maybe he retreated back or not. So,
we're trying to find him.
>> Then we got him. We got him.
There was a pack of coyotes calling out
tonight. If he turned back instead of
coming back to us, I don't know what
would have happened.
Well, was a good boy. Yeah.
We're at Mara Vet. You can see how bad
he is.
Holy like the elbows,
the p 54 lb.
