Welcome to this week's Dirt Shed Show with me, Martyn Ashton.
Me, Blake Sampson.
And the new guy, James Pickering.
We've got a new guy.
Let's find out more about that on the Dirt Shed Show.
James Pickering.
Welcome to the team, mate.
Thank you for having me.
It's a GMB, mate.
I know, look at him.
Isn't it amazing?
We've got an XC guy.
100% better XC, man.
I know.
Someone that looks good in Lycra.
Yeah, yes.
Do you look good in Lycra, Blake?
Nah, I'm good to differ.
I'm looking forward to some big rich pain versus James.
XC challenges coming up.
Are you going to give rich pain more pain?
Not on them stupid 24-hour things he does.
No, he rides too long.
Not very much hour of power, in and out.
I don't want to be racing through the night.
That's not me, I don't think.
In and out, hour of power.
And top five national elite cross country.
Last year.
Last year, yeah.
Straight off it.
Marathon champs as well, I came sixth.
I do like longer distance, but not quite 24 hours.
Can you do that with bikepacking bags?
I love bikepacking, Blake.
There you go, there you go.
Camping outside, riding.
Connor, help me out.
He always wants to bring it to bikepacking.
I'll tell you what, here's the big news.
Here's the big news, right?
BMXer.
I know, take a look at this.
Look at this, yeah.
Four pegs, grinds.
No brakes.
He loves the pegs.
No brakes.
Yeah, that's just how it is.
And a free coaster.
Skate parks.
Free coaster as well, so no pedaling backwards.
So he can fakie.
Fakie, yeah.
James can fakie.
I was going to say, trying to find a funny name for you.
Yeah, no.
James can fakie.
You're not fakie, Blake.
Blakey can't fakie.
According to...
I can't do tailwhip, so it's...
Okay, there you are.
It's just for courses, isn't it?
Yeah, exactly.
You're so new school on your BMX setup.
You're old school.
I mean, that's like Jamie Bestwick vert setup.
That is brilliant.
I'm petrified of ramps bigger than six foot though,
so I will not be doing vert anytime soon.
There's a video.
That's how this works.
Right, we've got to get into the show
because you need to learn what this show is all about.
I know, yeah.
Best of luck.
Right, let's go.
This week, we've got to be talking about La Tuile
because the racing this weekend at the World Cups was amazing.
I'm going to start off with the enduro.
Night stage.
You know, that's one thing I hit.
That was rad.
I did see a few clips of it in the social
and it looked mental.
It looks horrible in the daylight.
Never mind in the night.
Imagine the rock casting all those bloody shadows and things.
You're like, where am I going?
I mean, looking at these crashes, it was hard to judge
but what I think is brilliant is enduro's needed something like this for so long.
Something that differentiates it,
makes it stick out from the downhill and the cross country,
which it's always compared to.
And I think these night stages,
I think this is going to be saying they all do.
Hopefully, they're going to stick around.
Hopefully, it stays.
It looks epic.
I need there to be fuel and caffeine though,
that late in the day.
The crowd looked up for it too.
They looked up there.
I guess at that time of night, everyone's had a few.
Yeah.
Imagine doing that in Whistler.
Yeah.
You get all the bears and stuff coming after you.
Yeah.
Be careful out there.
Yeah, yeah.
I'm scared of the dark.
That's why I'm saying it.
Be careful out there.
But there was great results also, a little bit.
So, Ella Connolly and Slavomir Lukasic, both.
Is it Lukasic or Lukasich?
Don't ask me about pronouncing names.
That's on you, man.
That's on me.
I always get it wrong.
They both took the overalls with their results.
Slavomir won and then Ella Connolly was second overall.
So, they've taken the overalls with a round to spare.
Wow.
They can go on holiday.
That is good.
They can go on holiday now.
Yeah.
No more having to ride in the dark.
No.
They're all going to have to get used to that now.
I think they should turn the event lights off
and they've got to do it with lights on their bike.
Only.
Instead of gels, they'll have like carrots in their pocket.
Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Or glow sticks.
Glow sticks, yeah.
So, that was Enduro.
Amazing.
And then we come round to the downhill.
Unreal.
Oh, hang on.
Let him go.
I'm the biggest fan of little Goldston.
He's not.
He's little.
But man alive, he's taken four.
Quad trick.
Quad hat trick.
What Blake's trying to say is that is his fourth win on a trot.
And you were saying earlier on, you reckon that-
He had a flat tire.
Well, he had a flat tire.
Has he broke the mould for physical size of downhill riders?
I know.
Before, you had to be six foot eight, Steve Peat, Warner, Greg Minnaar.
Now, they're all five foot tall.
Yeah, they are shorter.
Gives hope for us little lads.
Talk about those results.
We'll be down here, mate.
Who else has done a quad trick?
Well, I mean, we've got Sam Hill would have done four in a row, I think.
Gwynny was last year.
Gwynny would have, yes.
Obviously, Rachel did in the women's.
Steve Jones was saying to me earlier on that, obviously, Rachel did,
I think it was, God knows how many races it was in a trot.
More than I can count.
And also, Anne Carrow did, I think, nine or something like that on the trot.
So in the women's, a few more have done it.
But in the men, it's very rare.
And how he's doing it is just-
What is it about four races in a row that is so hard to do, we think?
Consistency.
The consistency in downhill is so difficult anyway, isn't it?
But to do it-
Punches and mechanicals and, yes.
You need a lot and you've got to have the luck going with you.
At the moment, he's got the momentum on the bike.
He's got the momentum in terms of his support
and he has got the momentum in just like his own belief.
I reckon the team has done well.
Well, you know what's incredible is look at Gracie Hemstreet, right?
She's now suddenly almost like a regular podium, if not winner.
So we've got Greg Minnaar just smashing it as a team manager.
Then we've got Steve Peat who's just like,
his riders just can't stop winning.
He's like, stop winning, you lot.
It's getting boring.
It's almost like they know what they're doing, isn't it?
It is, it is, it is.
I was chatting to Stevie on the phone the other day and I was like,
dude, what is going on here?
You guys are all so fast.
He was like just, you know, just like shrugging it all off.
If only it was that easy, eh?
It can't be, can it?
Amazing results though.
Yeah, of course, Nina Hoffman also won in the women
as Jackson Goldson taking the win in the men.
Some really exciting stuff, right?
But do you want to get to some drama?
Yes, please.
Go on.
Some drama.
We like a bit of drama.
What's the tea?
Right, you know it was Mega Avalanche this weekend.
I missed it.
This is probably the first time in three years I've missed it.
Yeah, I mean, you've done it loads.
I love that event.
You're like an old school McGrath.
Is it as carnage as it looks?
Yes.
I've never done it.
No, you should do it.
It looks horrific.
Video two.
It looks amazing, yeah.
On an XC bike in Lycra.
Oh, mate, stop speaking, James.
Stop speaking.
You did a big hardtail, didn't you?
These guys are listening.
You're still paying for it, Matt.
Yeah, well, right.
Apparently, a bit of cheating goes down at Mega Avalanche.
Especially on the e-bike run.
And everywhere else.
I've seen it.
Now, I had a man on the inside.
I had a man.
Because I've been waiting for Mega Avalanche.
Because I've been following Ben Moore on social, who I know a bit.
And he's a really nice dude.
And he's been saying, I'm going to win it.
I'm going to win it.
But tongue-in-cheek.
You know, like just money with a mouth.
But man, he did really well.
And I got him to give us a little bit of an update.
Hey, Martin.
Hey, guys.
Great to be on the show.
Ben Moore here from Orbea Bikes.
I have just got back from an amazing week in Alpe d'Huez at the Mega Avalanche.
Such an iconic race.
And I think that's so special about this race is that everyone can enter it.
It's not just for pros.
And I met so many inspiring people from all corners of the planet that took part.
Absolutely fantastic.
I pedaled my socks off.
I did everything I possibly could.
I finished sixth overall.
Which, to be honest with you, I'm quite happy about.
Because I got beat by five people that are truly better than me.
Absolute fantastic athletes.
And I couldn't do any better than that.
Now, I think we're living in such an amazing era at the moment.
We're being given bicycles with batteries and motors to assist us.
And that's all it is.
It assists us up to whatever the legal limits are.
Now, in Europe, we are set to 15 miles an hour.
I believe it's 20 in the US.
Now, that means that over 15 miles an hour is all you.
So you're pedaling what is a bit more of a heavy bike, let's say.
So it comes down to who's the strongest and who can pedal through that 18, 19, 20 miles an hour.
However, unfortunately so, not everybody was doing that at the Mega Avalanche this year.
There were some chipped e-bikes.
The terms for it are unrestricted, which means you take the limiter off.
So it's not, therefore, abiding by the laws and also the race regulations.
I am so, so against this because it's cheating.
That's all it is.
You are influencing other people's race by doing this.
People would then have to battle against you whilst you're cruising up the climbs,
which means that they're fighting against you
and maybe using a different strategy to what they'd set out to do.
Then maybe they make a mistake afterwards or have a mechanical.
And I know many people that did have these problems
because of the people that were cheating.
Now, luckily, the Mega Avalanche UCC had scrutineering,
which was fantastic after the race.
They caught these people cheating and threw them out the race.
All I would say is, please, guys, don't abuse our sport.
This is a fantastic era we were living in
where we were able to race with electrical assistance as well.
But cheating is cheating and it's horrible.
Don't like seeing it.
I like getting beaten by people that are truly better than me.
So well done to the five in front.
Massive congratulations to anyone who finished the Mega Avalanche
because it is a war of attrition, a brutal race.
And please, don't cheat next year.
Let's all go there and have fun and find out who's the best rider.
See you there.
There you go.
I had a man on the inside.
What do you think?
I don't know.
I mean, it makes a big difference.
Surely people are checking their bikes.
How do you test for that overdrive?
If you've got it unlimited and you can basically take power onto 50 mile an hour,
no one's going to touch it.
No one's going to touch it.
Nobody is monitoring this.
Yeah, well, I don't know.
But well done, Ben.
Sixth in Mega Avalanche.
I'm still mega impressed.
Very good job.
And thank you for that update because it's good to know how things are going.
Just to get to the bottom of the achievement, to be honest.
Yes.
Very, very good.
They have to go up to go down, namely.
Yeah, I know.
We've also got something to announce this week.
What is it, Martyn?
What are you doing?
Thank you, thank you.
We can announce James again.
But what else?
We've got a survey.
I love surveys.
We really want to know what you want to see on GMBN.
We want to improve it.
We want to know what you want to see us doing.
What kind of riding you're doing.
So we've got this survey.
The Mega Avalanche in Lycra.
That's happening.
In the comments down below, that is happening right now, okay?
Now, in this survey, Phil, it's going to take you about 10 minutes, right?
So it's thorough, but you can win yourself a Garmin Edge MTB.
That's the new one.
What else have we got on offer?
Bluegrass protection.
Got Met and Bluegrass protection.
A little bit of this going on, maybe?
Not that one, because that's my crush one.
Look at that, look at that.
Something like that.
So if you fill out that survey, you can get yourself in with a chance of winning some of that stuff,
which would be absolutely amazing.
It would be a great win, but we need that information,
because we want to make the channel better for you.
So help us out with that survey.
Right, that's it.
On with the show.
No more announcements.
You're probably thinking, where's Tom of the news?
Oh, well, he's somewhere on the trail.
We've got an issue, because he's actually racing.
Dude, what's going on with Tom and Rich?
Yes, so Rich and Tom are racing Enduro 2 in Verbier.
What is Enduro 2?
Well, it's a pairs format stage race.
Is that what the 2 is for?
That's what the 2 is for.
Pairs format stage race in Verbier over three days.
You have to start and finish with your pair every day.
So if they crash, you have to crash.
No, you don't have to crash, but you have to finish.
I don't know how close together you have to finish at the end of the stage,
but your cumulative time.
How are they doing?
They're doing all right.
So we're currently filming on a Monday.
They're sitting in about 30th position at the moment.
They've got one stage to go today.
There's 31 teams.
I thought you were going to say there's 30.
No, there's not.
It's like 80, isn't it?
Yeah, it's about 80.
They're smashing it.
They've got a massive stage today.
Last stage in Verbier.
Just under 3,000 meters of descent to do today.
Oh, that sounds sick.
Are they doing the pedaling up?
Or they're doing the-
Oh, there's tons of transitions.
Yeah, they have to transition.
Rich said, look at this clip of Rich.
This is a transition.
That's not a rate, that's the transition.
The transition looks unreal.
Amazing, yeah.
That's how good the transition looks.
Yeah, I'm going to sign me up for next year.
Yeah, so news this week is Rich and Tom are smashing it.
I know.
I tell you, if there's one thing I wouldn't want to do,
it's trying to keep up Rich Bain.
No, no, yeah.
I went out riding for him the other day, with him the other day,
training for Grinduro.
Oh, he nearly killed me.
He killed your bike.
Oh, he did kill the bike.
The bike came back with some dinged rims and flat tires.
That's not much training, is it?
No, no, it's not.
But yeah, good luck to those guys.
Hope that keeps going.
Keep on smashing it.
Enjoy the party tonight.
Yeah, oh, it's going to be a big one tonight.
Love it, love it.
Right, this week's sickest thing has to be his new video part
from Caden Ingersoll and Warden Co. called The Come Up.
This video is shot at his home compound in Highland Mountain Bike Park
as these are the two spots that shaped his riding.
And the whole thing is crazy.
It's just five minutes of bangers.
My favorite clips have to be that 360 tailwhip to opposite downside whip
followed by the three oppo downwhip to late tailwhip.
But he also does a 360 triple downside tailwhip in this.
And the ender is so crazy.
Depending on what you want to call it,
it's either like a cork decade to late 360 or 720 downside whip.
Just so crazy.
Anyway, the whole thing's sick,
so it's definitely worth checking this one out.
Right, that's my sickest thing this week.
Time to go back to the shed.
Some great hacks and bodges this week.
And remember, winner, and I love this,
this is really ramped up, isn't it?
£50 worth of GMBN merch for the best hack and bodge this week.
So be thinking about that as you're watching.
Have you got a hack and bodge that could be here next week for a win?
So our first one this week, it's from Robbie P.
What's going on?
That, my friend, is a vape speedy bottle.
So it's like precision oiling.
Well, instead of using a massive thing that you get from the shop,
yeah, so you just kind of decanted it into that.
XC rider, do you go along dripping one onto each link?
I just get the whole thing sprayed over, wipe it with a rag.
I've seen one of the top roadies doing literally pin by pin.
Who's got time for that, though?
Just want to get out on the trails, don't you?
A mechanic has, they don't do it.
So that's a pretty good one.
Useful tip if you want to do precision oiling.
And then the next one we've got this week is from Robin Hartwell, our classic.
Oh, this is a classic.
He can't cut the cable tie.
That's his antenna.
I was about to say, it's like, it's a quick fix.
Yeah, he's going riding clearly down that mine.
Maybe he's doing the enduro stage in the dark.
He went tunneling, he did go, yeah.
He went down there?
Yeah, yeah.
So he went down there with that on, that was the only light he got.
I wouldn't go down there.
Yes, it worked.
The zip tie needed to be clipped.
And also it needed to be spun so that the little nubbin that joins them is out of view.
No, just out of view, just out of view.
So it would have looked nice and clean.
I feel like that might-
What happens if the cable tie comes off, and then your light comes off,
and then you're in the dark?
And then you're in a real damp cave.
Look at the mud in front of the entrance.
You wait for Garendalf and Gollum to turn up and save you, I guess.
Gollum, I guess.
Next up, oh, this looks good, from Virgil Roger.
3D printed.
Yes.
3D printed.
That's always impressive.
Chain guide.
Oh boy, it's almost cotic as well.
Do you need chain guides these days, though?
Not with a wide and narrow.
No, I don't think-
No, I've never, no.
No.
Is that, oh, yes, I don't know.
It's 3D printed.
It's nicely done.
I feel like that's probably taken the win this week, don't you think?
Well, yeah, because it's like an oval chain ring,
and a normal chain guide, it would go.
It's nicely done.
I think we've got both ends of the spectrum here.
We've got zip tie use and 3D printing.
I feel like we've got to go with 3D printing.
I can't give a zip tie a win, can I?
No, no, no, but great mining.
I liked it.
Well done, Virgil Roger.
You have won yourself £50 worth of GMBN merch.
We will be in touch, or if we've not got your email, email us.
Please, because we need to get your contact details.
That's fantastic.
There's £50 more merch to come in a little bit,
but first, let's take a look at some things we like this week.
Things we like this week, and this is something I like this week by far.
Chris Hoy.
I know, look at him.
Looking, oh, Sir Chris Hoy out on a mountain bike, which is fantastic,
but there was nothing better than seeing he's still got the jump style racer.
Yes.
Look at that.
Squashing that.
He's a legend, isn't he?
Oh, man, so good.
So good to see him out on a mountain bike.
That was by far my favorite thing.
What was you liking this week, Bingham?
Look at this crash.
Oh.
I'm not sure I do like that.
I'm not a fan of liking crashes, but this one, my gosh.
Not fun.
He's all right, but man alive.
That happening to you now.
Not nice, not nice, not nice.
Go on.
Did you see Dennis Ennison riding a mountain bike this week?
Dennis Ennison, the BMX rider out on the trails.
Look at it, look at that.
Bringing BMX style to mountain biking.
Looks unreal.
Oh, and the tree, he's hauling.
Tree taps, 360s.
Boom.
His crew out there all look really, really good.
That was really good, and something else I want to suggest,
a follow for you, Sam and Ryan, okay?
We'll put the link in the description down below.
Basically, they're an amazing couple of friends.
Remind me of me and you out on silly mountain bikes.
Random tandem thing.
Basically, they go out with this extreme motus, the bike is called,
and just go on all sorts of ridiculous terrains.
Basically, I'm not sure which way around it is,
but Sam's pushing Ryan or Ryan's pushing Sam,
and they take on the craziest stuff with an amazing sense of humor.
They're definitely worth a follow.
They will entertain you for sure.
Caption contest.
This is Steve.
Take a look at Steve, right?
Doing his best.
Although he has deliberately pulled that face.
He looks like Wurzel Gummidge.
If you know who Wurzel Gummidge is.
He looks like all sorts of things.
First caption this week is from Grant3399.
Steve after testing his safety glasses with a hammer.
Yeah, last week's photo was him with that hammer in his hand,
and we were like, he's about to give himself a whack in the face.
That is probably what you'd look like, I guess.
Next one, Dead Kennedy.
How on earth did Smeagol get into a GMBN caption contest?
I like that one.
The last one we've got is from Yodapig.
Yodapig.
Yodapig?
You're not a pig, but I'm saying Yodapig.
Anyway, it says GMBN had Doddy, and EMBN had Dobby.
Oh, all the movie franchise references today.
Lord of the Rings.
I like that one.
I like Dobby.
Dude, you're the new presenter.
I think you should pick our winner.
Remember, you're giving away £50 of GMBN merch right now.
I think it's got to be Grant this week.
Grant, well done.
Steve after testing his safety glasses with a hammer.
It don't work.
Congratulations, you are the winner,
and you want to get in touch and give us your details so we can send that out.
If you would like to win the caption contest next week, here's your photo.
There you go.
Give us a caption for that, and you can be on the show next week.
Time for the Bike Vault, and we're starting out with this one from Richard Nordenberg.
Now, I have some information about this bike.
Go on.
It says, my bike.
Yes.
My bike?
No, his bike.
What bike do we think this is?
Conor reckons it's a Commencal.
I thought it was a Specialized, but it's not a Specialized.
It's not a Specialized.
It is a pretty unique bike.
It's got the single speed there, the tensioner on.
It's got the brake routed through the star nut, so I reckon he's-
Slopestyle rigged up.
What did you call it?
Slopeduro, they call it.
That's what the kids call them these days.
It's not a Zinc, is it?
It's not a Zinc.
No, it's nice though.
It's a super nice.
It's given us some entertainment, hasn't it?
Right.
Next up, we have got Henrik Hedberg's Atherton.
That looks cool.
I'm a big fan of Atherton bikes, Martyn.
Hit the bell, dude.
That's just super nice.
Next up, we have got-
Oh, that's an old school Schwinn, isn't it?
Schwinn, man.
Schwinn from Troy Fletcher.
It's in the smallest gear, isn't it?
Well spotted.
It's nice.
It's very nice.
It's a nice bike.
Needs slightly better background for a super nice.
Next up, we've got a Marin from-
How are we saying it?
Marin or Marin?
Marin.
Troy Fletcher in Pooley Mountain.
I can't see enough of the bike.
The bike's too small, isn't it?
I know, it's too small.
It's nice.
It's a rift zone.
It's a 27.5.
Next up.
It's very XC, isn't it?
Giant from Ollie.
Yeah, come on, James.
What are we talking here?
It's cool.
It's pretty old school, but it's a nice for me.
Nice?
Yes.
Oh my God.
I can't believe you didn't get that super nice.
The wheels look massive.
Yes.
It looks very old school.
Yes.
Ollie, it's nice.
I think it was more, but it's nice.
Next up, Matt Mifsud.
What is that?
That is unique.
It's a downhill dirt jump.
Downhill dirt jump.
XC Enduro.
A bit of a view, Blake, isn't it?
Bangers.
Talk us through this.
I don't really know what you do with that.
To be honest, he's on trend with the big high-rise bars,
but then he's forgotten that it is a hardtail,
but I have been there.
I've done that.
I think that looks amazing, but that's a super nice.
That's a super nice.
It's totally different.
This is from Ian M. Daniel.
He's a right turkey.
Yes.
He's got the tires lined up.
He's got the cranks in the right position.
What are you giving it?
I'm giving it a super nice.
Go on, then.
Next up, we have our Marge Gerrins Cube.
Is it a cube?
Yes, it is a cube.
It's a lovely shot.
Yes, it's a lovely shot.
There's some kind of pink bear in the background.
It looks a bit like a hippo.
Yes, there's a hippo in the shot.
There's a hippo in the shot.
What we're saying is that he's caught a little bit of the car,
but we can laugh about it.
It's a very nice shot, though.
I think that's a super nice.
Slovenia, it is.
It's in Slovenia.
Look at that.
That's mega.
Well done.
If you've got a bike and you want to see it on the show, then get involved.
GMBN Uploader is linked down below.
You could be on the show getting an arbitrary judgment from three lunatics.
I've got an idea.
Why don't you put it for sale?
You might be like a free ad.
For sale.
That could work.
Right, that's all we've got time for this week,
but first, we're going to talk about what we've got coming up on the channel this week.
We've got some bangers.
Solid-state batteries over on the EMBN show tomorrow.
Very nice, yes.
Solid-state batteries.
What does that mean?
Does that mean?
I don't even know what that means.
Is that built into the bike?
Conor, you know anything about solid-state?
Brilliant, brilliant.
And he's our nerd.
He's the clever one.
Sounds like a science lesson.
What chance have we got?
I rode the most famous mountain bike park in the world.
That's Ferg out at Whistler.
That's going to be you soon, dude.
I bloody hope so.
