Once I was on vacation in Turkey and started thinking about the most beautiful German words
Let's explore them together
I'm currently on vacation in Turkey and over the past few days I've
been thinking about what kind of video I could record for you here
Since I've been speaking English nonstop here I've truly missed German
and I've realized just how beautiful the German language actually is
That's why in this video I'm showing you the 10 most beautiful German words
Want to know which words they are Then definitely stay tuned
Sometime you might write to me hey Maria thanks to you

And if you don't want to miss any videos from my channel please turn this red button into gray
Thank you now you've subscribed to my channel and will soon be speaking German even better
This video is structured as follows
First I'm going to show you a beautiful German word
Then I'll explain what it means
And finally I'll give you two examples using this word
We'll start with the first word: gut feeling
Trusting your gut means listening to your inner feelings or your inner voice
You decide whether a decision feels right or wrong
You rely only on your emotions and don't overthink things
A gut feeling is usually spontaneous while a logical decision is
planned By the way intuition can also help when learning languages
Sometimes a spontaneous idea is the right one
Here are two examples using this lovely word
I'm going with my
gut and starting a degree in Germany
—it just feels right Who here is studying in Germany
I've often trusted my gut instinct and it's usually led me to the right choice
This is one of my personal favorite words
For example I can go into town just to stroll around
Then I'll pop into a few shops or stroll leisurely through the streets without any rush
When someone is bummeling they are not pursuing any particular goal In this
sense we use the verb bummeln in the perfect tense with the auxiliary verb sein
I was just wandering around the streets Bumming around
is slang and can also be used negatively to mean loitering
That means doing things slowly for example working at a slow pace
By the way if you waste time on something you'll forget about it
And guess what That's really interesting
In this sense we use the verb bummeln in the perfect tense with haben
I slacked off for instance by working slowly
And here are the examples
I love being able to stroll leisurely through town on weekends
Advent season is just around the corner
Shall we stroll together through the Christmas market
When was the last time you actually wandered around the city
A night to celebrate
Well almost
When you're off work you're done with your tasks and can enjoy the rest of your day
But you don’t have to necessarily celebrate or throw a
party Most people just relax or do something they enjoy
Thus quitting time is a reward after a long day at work
By the way people also say "quit for the day" when ending
work in the morning for instance after a night shift
It's still quitting time That means the end of work
regardless of the time of day
And one more important thing
You can clock out now
Incidentally we don’t need an article here
Wow that was a long workday
Finally it’s time to go home
Yesterday I left work early and met up with a friend
What time do you usually finish work
Word number four Gemütlichkeit
Even high German words can beautiful
Gemütlichkeit describes a warm welcoming atmosphere or environment where one feels at ease
That place can be different for each of us
For some it's cozy to relax at home on the sofa in the evening
For others coziness means sitting down to dinner with the family and chatting together
And here are my examples
The apartment still feels a bit empty
Somehow it’s missing that cozy warmth
Sitting on the couch in winter with a cup of tea and my cats is pure coziness for me
And what is coziness to you
Word number five cuddly
Do you know this word
When something is cuddly it's especially cute or sweet
We usually use this word when talking about animals
But a stuffed toy can be cuddly too
Yeah okay that's animal as well
We usually consider smaller animals to be cute
So one cannot say for example that this elephant is cute
No but a baby elephant can already be adorable
The word adorable is kind of adorable itself isn't it
So and of course I've prepared
some examples Gieko and
Fumpa are so adorable I could cuddle them all day long
I saw a cute lion cub at the zoo
Does your native language have a word like that
Word number six the Kuddelmuddel
This playful German word means chaos or mess
We're not just talking about the mess in a room or
the like There can be absolute chaos in your mind too
When for instance there are just too many thoughts floating around
The word Kuddelmuddel itself sounds utterly like Kuddelmuddel
And here are my examples
Oh what a mess I really need to clean up urgently
There's such a big mess in
my head right
now I really need to think things through Do you like that word
Word number seven is cuddling
It's an absolute comfort word
It means to snuggle up against someone or something
When you hear the word cuddling
you instantly feel a warm and pleasant sensation
Of course you don't have to cuddle only with a person
but also cuddling with animals Popular combinations with
this word include items such
as cuddle socks or cuddly toys
Sorry another example with my cats again
but it's necessary
My cats cuddle on the scratching post
Yes that's indeed a scratching post
I'd love to snuggle in bed all day today
Who would you like to cuddle with
Tag that person in the comments
Word number eight Mucks be quiet little mouse
Something is not just quiet but so silent
ot even the smallest sound can be heard
Not a sound is heard
Mucks means noise and mouse silence means
at one can be as quiet as a little mouse
A person or animal can behave as silently as a tiny mouse
Or it can be quiet as a mouse at a place
So best thing now is to be quiet as Muck's little mouse
so you don’t miss any of the other
details either For example the
students are as quiet as mice because they’re
taking a test Good students
At night it's as quiet as a mouse in Mucks house
It's almost a little eerie
Do you have an example using this word
Please write it in the comments
I love the word number nine
The nap
Whoever takes a nap gets the lucky
chance to sleep a little during the day
I don't usually have luck
A nap typically doesn't last that long
Maybe half an hour or an hour
But one feels refreshed and rejuvenated afterward
The word actually comes from the verb nicken
which means to sleep a little
A similar word is nap
Just a short sleep
I'm so tired but it's only noon
Maybe I should take a quick nap
My son is so quiet
What is he doing
He's taking a nap
I don't want to disturb him
When was your last nap
I could actually use a quick nap
Word number ten
That is also a very
beautiful word Togetherness
Togetherness is essentially derived from the word loneliness
Loneliness is a negative word
But togetherness is very positive
It means being with one's partner
or spends time together with his partner
Especially in couples with children
there is often not much time for just the two of them
And that's precisely why it's
something truly special Togetherness
is a genuine comfort word
just like cuddling For example
Many couples head to a wellness hotel
on weekends to
enjoy some quality time together Nice isn't it
Especially after a stressful workday
Spending a few hours together can be very relaxing
That's a very beautiful word isn't it
Is it new to you
Nice right
I hope you've learned a few new words from this video too
In my German courses I always tell my students

m curious whether you're already familiar with these words
Cheese high Do you know why
I especially love German
The German language is very creative

family now I'm glad you're with us
Today I've picked seven special words for
you Maybe you'll grasp their true meaning
You won't be able to figure it out at first glance
So stay with it no matter what
Today is going to be especially exciting
This video is structured as follows: first I'
ll state the word then I'll explain its meaning
And finally there are two examples for each term
Sounds great Are you as excited as I am
Now it begins
The first word is Dreikäsehoch
Well you're quite the little Dreikäsehoch aren't you
Could it possibly be someone as tall as three pieces of
cheese stacked on top of each
other One might actually think so
Three cheese up
It actually makes sense doesn't it
But the word has absolutely nothing to do with cheese
Too bad really because I personally love cheese
It's just a humorous term
for a little child who feels and acts as if it could
conquer the world and already
is a proper little adult
In particular children who behave very confidently—
or even boldly—despite
their relatively small stature
Most often it's about guys The
term can be used affectionately
or with a touch of playful
mockery For example take a look
The little rascal already wants to play with the big football
Maybe people are just teasing the boy a bit
One more example
When I was just a child five euros
felt like a small fortune to me
In this example the term is used
neutrally even affectionately so always
pay attention to the context Does your native language have such a word
Please feel free to leave me a comment
Word Number 2 the cheek-slapper
You know what a backhander is
The rolling pin I'll show you
A slap
Another word for it is slap
The back of the hand the slap
So if someone has a slap face
en one means that this person has
a face you'd genuinely want to slap
But beware this is of course not meant literally Violence is
never the answer and of course
one shouldn't be handing out slaps
But it's a way of saying you
don't like that person or find
them really annoying The term is therefore used to express
at someone seems
unlikable without actually
referring to the person's real appearance
It's important to be very careful
with this word because it's not really
kind and could hurt other people And
that's something we certainly don't want
But I just want
you to understand the difficult
German words too Here are two examples
He really does have a face that
deserves a good slap Just looking
at him makes me aggressive My neighbor is incredibly annoying
His smug face says it all about him
And when was the last time someone truly annoyed you
I hope it's been a very very long time
But feel free to share your experiences in the comments
Word number 3 the key child
Key and child
Hmm let me think for a moment
A child with a key then
What could that possibly mean
Let me tell you
A key child is a child
e child who often comes home alone after kindergarten or
school because their parents are
at work and therefore not there
It has its own key for the apartment or house Often the child
must occupy itself engaging in
activities until the parents return
For example Lena comes home from school alone and has her own key
since her parents work long hours
she is considered a latchkey child
And sometimes you have to cook for yourself or
do your homework alone
It's not that bad really
Alternatively our school offers an additional afternoon
supervision program for school-
aged children on certain afternoons
I was a latchkey kid myself once
And you were you familiar with the term already
Let me know in the comments
Item No 4 the helicopter parent or helicopter mom
Hmm helicopter mom
A mother with her own helicopter—sounds great doesn't it
But that's unfortunately not what it means
A helicopter parent refers to a parent who excessively
and overly intervenes in their child's life
She hovers around her child like a helicopter
constantly wanting to know what it 's
doing The word illustrates that this mother is always monitoring her children
and often tries to solve problems
for their child even when the child
might manage it alone—something that would actually benefit the child
Well now it doesn't sound quite so appealing does it
And it's not just helicopter moms
but actual helicopter parents
But there's no helicopter
dad Fathers are always
cool And now two examples using these terms
Lisa can never play with us unless her mother is present She
has a real helicopter mom Tobias
has genuine helicopter parents
They check his phone messages and computer several times
a day They might want to give
their child a bit more trust
Fortunately I'm not a helicopter
parent It's very important
to me that Kian is independent and has his own privacy
And you Could you be a helicopter parent
Or do you know other helicopter parents
Let me know in the comments
Word number 5
The children's sausage
Oh my God What on earth
Sausage made from children Where on earth
would you even eat something like that
Who allowed something like this
You can calm down
It's not sausage made from children
but for children
The sausage may come in fun and colorful packaging
or often has a childlike
shape such as a laughing face
Sausages in bear shapes or with various designs
I have a little secret to share with you
I actually enjoy eating children's sausages myself
The children's sausage is
not just for the little ones
adults too can't resist its cute faces or funny shapes
Now two examples using this term
Mom could you please bring me two packs
of this delicious children's sausage
I absolutely love eating these
At our picnic last Saturday
the children's sausage was the biggest hit among the younger guests
Do you also like hot dogs
Let me know in the comments please
Word number 6
The sweatbox
Hmm a box where you sweat
Ugh no thanks
Oh wait wait a minute
That's not the actual meaning
of the word Grabbing someone
in a bear hug looks like this So it refers to a hold
where one takes another
person's head under their
arm holds it firmly and presses down slightly
Well and if you stay in this position too
long I think you really start to sweat
So they
say "put someone in a chokehold " For example
as a child my brother often put me in a chokehold
until I finally gave him the remote control
Yes typical siblings
Stop annoying me right now
Or I'll put you in a headlock right now
Don't worry that was just a joke
And you
Have you ever put someone in a bear hug
Leave me a comment
Our seventh word is not a noun
This is an adjective
surprisingly And it's "meaning-laden "
What on earth does that mean
To be pregnant with meaning
So meaningful When
something carries deep significance one expects a
great deal from it—perhaps a
profound meaning or immense importance
Ultimately everything could turn out to be a hoax
It always depends on the context
Here are two examples using this word
The politician paused meaningfully during his speech leaving
everyone in the room eager for an important announcement
In the end however nothing particularly interesting followed the pause
The film's evocative conclusion
left room for interpretation and sparked discussion
Have you ever heard this adjective before
If not please leave a comment saying
you've learned something new today
That would make me happy
In the next video we watch together
we'll be exploring paradoxes
also contradictory terms in the German language
You'll find out exactly what I mean right away
German is really strange There
are even open secrets and special
exceptions By the way how long have you been studying German
One year two years or maybe even longer
German is already quite logical isn't it
Especially when it comes to grammar
But there are some words that are absolutely illogical— I'd
even say paradoxical That's
exactly what this video is about
I'll show you some funny German words you might
not even know yet Want
to find out what they are
Then be sure to watch this video all the way to the end You're
guaranteed to learn something new
Here's how this video is structured
First I'll show you a word
that actually consists of two
contradictory concepts Then I'll explain what it means
And finally I'll give you two more examples using this word
So let's get started
On one hand you have the choice
but on the other it remains your obligation
The elective compulsory subject is a school subject
at students must fulfill
But they can choose from various options
Sounds complicated It’s not
Let me give you a simple example
In sixth grade students
are required to
attend a physical education class in the afternoon
But they can choose which sport they'd like to play
Tennis basketball or dancing
So they have a choice
It's a mandatory subject with optional activities
A elective course that's all
For example
Are there elective subjects at schools in your hometown
Please leave me a comment
The next word
You can only get a burn from contact with something hot For
example if you stay in the sun
too long you can get a sunburn
Can this also happen through cold
When frozen food dries out
it develops freezer burn
So it's not actually burned
but the spots look the same
They are discolored white gray or brown
and no longer safe to eat
For example
Have you ever seen
food with freezer burn in
your freezer If so leave
me a comment I love you
I hate you
Do you know the word hate-love
Hate-love means that you have a
strong emotional attachment to someone
as to do with a particular thing or activity
However you might find such an activity incredibly great at times
and absolutely terrible at others
Some of you might say that
I have a love-hate relationship with
my neighbor He's very likable but his
loud music often gets on my nerves Do
you happen to have a similar example
Rules often have exceptions
but there are also exceptions to the exceptions
Exactly the exception rule
What a rule is is clear
We establish rules that apply in every case
But nearly every rule has at least one exception
That is an exception rule describes
what exceptions exist to a rule
For example when filing a tax return
one must pay attention to a few exception rules
Why are there
so many exceptions
in the German language Why
Come closer even closer
I'll tell you a secret
but you must never tell anyone
The open secret
A secret is something nobody is allowed to know
An open secret therefore is something
that technically nobody should know
yet everyone actually does
For example that Peter and
Simone are a couple is an
open secret it's an open
secret that Kathrin has resigned
and has not terminated it oneself
Do you have an example of an open secret as well
My text is now perfect
but here I could still make some improvements
And here too
That can be improved even further
And here as well
For some reason the text hasn't really improved
Do you know the verb "verschlimmbessern"
When you worsen something
you intend to improve a situation
but actually make it even worse
If I rewrite a text too often
the risk is great that I'
ll only make it worse Oh no
with all these embellishments
I really made the soup worse
Have you ever made something worse while trying to improve it
You really ought to hurry up a bit
The next two examples aren't words
but phrases
yet I find them absolutely delightful
For example hurrying slowly
How can one hurry slowly
When the time comes to hurry
Then one must hurry up
Slowly here therefore does not describe speed
but is colloquial for it's time
We should start hurrying
now or we'll be late If
Lena doesn't hurry up the
train will leave without her
I'm also waiting for your example
The image is quite ugly If
we find something extremely
utterly unattractive we
can say it's quite ugly
The lamp is quite ugly I
'm definitely not buying
it Today my aunt finds her
old hairstyle quite ugly
but earlier she liked it
Is there something you find quite ugly
What did you think of these German words
But there's more
In the next video you'll learn words
that exist only in German
Want to know which words they are
Take care
Do you have to go to the cinema to see head cinema
Sending you warm greetings from Turkey
So many people here can speak German
That’s incredible
German is truly a special language
And there are even words that don
’t exist in other languages at all
And that’s what this video is about
I’m going to show you ten words
They exist only in German
Want to know which words they are
Then be sure to watch this video all the way to the end
You're sure to learn a lot of new things
This video is structured as follows
First I'll introduce you to a typical German word
It's a word that doesn 't
exist in any other
language Then I'll explain what it means
And finally I'll give you two more examples using this word
Word number one is
A bridge day always falls between two free
days If Tuesday is a
holiday for example May 1st
Then the Monday before is a bridge day
To have an especially long weekend you can take a
vacation day on that Monday
making the Monday a bridge
You can make particularly smart use of your vacation days by combining them with public holidays
Here are two examples
Next Friday is a bridge day across all federal states
Have you already known this term
If so please write your own example in the comments
Even if this word was new to you still write an example
Word number two
Are you particularly empathetic and considerate
Can you critique others in a way that doesn't make them feel attacked
Do you also know how to effortlessly handle people who are especially sensitive
Well then you've got a good instinct for delicate situations
This is a social skill If you
possess this quality you know
ow to handle certain people or situations with care and caution
Almost as if touching them only with the tips of your fingers extremely gently
Incidentally there's also an idiom for
that: to handle someone with kid gloves
That means we must treat someone with the utmost care
And here are my examples
My sister handled the situation with great tact
Thank you
The customer is extremely upset
We need to show great sensitivity to calm him down
Say do you have that kind of sensitivity too
Word number three
The flesh of the fruit
Don't worry fruit flesh isn't some odd dish combining fruit and meat
Vegetarians and vegans also enjoy eating the flesh of fruit
This term refers to the juicy part of a piece of fruit
The flesh of the fruit is somewhat like meat
Yes something like that does exist
Even the small pieces of fruit found in some yogurts or juices are actually pieces of fruit pulp
Two examples
Orange juice is available with or without pulp
How do you prefer to drink orange juice
I like to drink orange juice with pulp
And you
For a delicious fruit salad I first peel the fruits and then dice the flesh
Delicious
The fourth word is
The mind's eye
Wow this actor really looks amazing
And this physique
What if I happened to run into him by chance and then just went ahead and spoke to him
Maybe he'd invite me for a cup of coffee
Oh God I've had enough of this daydreaming
I'm letting my imagination run away with me again
And once again a completely unique and personal movie played out in my mind
So you don't need to go to the cinema to enjoy mental cinema
After all we can also obtain that for free within our own thoughts and imagination
Just two more examples
These beach photos give me instant daydreams—I just want to book a flight right now
I want to go on vacation
Wait I'm already on vacation
At night before bed I often get lost in my thoughts and find myself pondering a hundred different things
Do you ever feel the same way
Have you ever had mental cinema
Word number five
The comfort food of sorrow
When you're sad and eat lots of snacks and sweets out of frustration you end up with comfort food weight gain
Literally it's the body fat that arises from sorrow or sadness
So we reach for comfort chocolate or start eating out of frustration and that leads to emotional weight gain
Two examples
If you snack on vegetables instead of chocolate out of frustration you're avoiding comfort food weight gain
Simple as that
After the long winter and the painful breakup with her boyfriend Lara now has not only winter weight but also sorrowful weight
Poor Lara
Number six is the earworm
Why won’t this song leave my head I just
can’t stop singing it silently to myself
Oh no that's an earworm
An earworm is a song that gets stuck in your head for minutes or sometimes even hours causing you to mentally replay it over and over
As if we had a worm in our ear singing us a song
Some songs are especially catchy earworms that stick in your head making it impossible to
shake them off all day long Have you ever experienced that too
Please give me an example of a catchy song
And I'll give you two examples using this word
That tune thanks for the earworm Now I can't get the melody out of my head
I've had this song stuck in my head all day
You know what it's called
Word number seven Schadenfreude
Schadenfreude means taking pleasure in another person's misfortune
For example their failure or hardship
Not very nice at all
We typically feel this kind of joy toward people we dislike and don’t wish well for whether in success or happiness
It's like a feeling of revenge one gets when someone acts unfairly or does something cruel and then shortly afterward something bad happens to them
Everything always comes back around you know that By
the way there's also an
adjective for it: schadenfreude
And I’ve prepared two more examples for you
When my unfriendly colleague arrived late to the meeting yesterday and was reprimanded by the boss I couldn't help but feel a small thrill of schadenfreude
You deserve it Why are you smiling Are
you enjoying this Oh
no did someone notice
I honestly can't stand this person at all
So I'm feeling a bit of schadenfreude already
You know that feeling
I genuinely wish everyone only the best
So schadenfreude has no place for me
The term Schnapsidee is made up of the words Schnaps and Idee
You might be familiar with schnapps and have already tried it
It's an alcoholic beverage typically consumed from small glasses known as shot glasses
But if you drink too much liquor you sometimes get crazy ideas—liquor ideas
A wild idea therefore is a strange crazy and often nonsensical thought or plan
Yesterday Lena tried to open a bottle with her teeth and ended up chipping a piece off one of them
What a ridiculous notion A spontaneous theme party
yesterday was truly a crazy idea but it was fun
Have you ever had a wild idea By the
way you don’t actually need to drink liquor to have a wild idea
Just so you know
Word number nine is an adjective and it's storm-free
Sturmfrei is an important term for people who don't live alone
If you're living with family friends or in a student dormitory
Usually you don't have the entire apartment or house to yourself that often
But when everyone's gone and you're completely alone at home you've got the place to yourself
The apartment is therefore free for a wild storm such as a house party
And here are my examples
On Friday I'm throwing a party at my place because my parents are on vacation and I have the house to myself
By the way you can throw a party
Exactly Or another example
I'm free tomorrow Want to come by
Word number ten is a verb a very strange verb
Do you know that feeling When you're
writing a text for your German class or university and trying to
Constantly trying to improve the text only makes it worse
Or when someone tries to decorate a gift and ends
up overdoing it so much that it no longer looks nice
To describe such a situation people use the term "making things worse while trying to fix them "
It's a combination of the verbs "worsen" and "improve "
We aim to improve something but in our efforts we overdo it and end up making it worse
Here are two examples for you
The birthday card is perfect just as it is—stop adding more flowers and hearts
You're only making the map worse
Now I've changed so much in the application that I've basically made it worse
Better to start over from the beginning
Has something like this ever happened to you Share your story in the comments
German is truly very creative
For instance there are animal terms used to describe people
These expressions sound very authentic and I think you absolutely should get to know them today
Your son is a real water rat
You're just a rat yourself German
is a highly creative language For
instance there are countless animal terms used to describe people
If you learn these words and can use them yourself you'll sound like a native German speaker
That's what you want isn't it
Animal traits are attributed to humans to emphasize specific characteristics
This has been about people not animals for a long time now
Does your native language actually have something like this Please let me know in the comments
Now let's get started
The coward That's someone who's afraid a wimp
But kids are the ones who often say that
When my son was still in kindergarten I heard this phrase all the time
Don't be such a scaredy-cat
Are you really a scaredy-cat
The term "Dreckspatz" refers to someone especially a child who has gotten themselves dirty
What would you say to that in your native language
The cheeky raccoon A mischievous little child endearingly so
Please don't be cheeky—subscribe to my channel if you find this information valuable
And I'm also really looking forward to a thumbs-up
The golden donkey symbolizes an endless source of money
Someone who always has cash on hand has a golden goose at home providing an endless source of money
I'd love to have a golden goose like that The bookworm
That's someone who reads a lot and enjoys it immensely
There's another synonym—you can say "bookworm" or "reading enthusiast "
I'm a total bookworm I absolutely love reading
If you're curious about which language I read in please check out this vlog
The Grump Goat That's a woman who's always complaining finding fault with everything
Or it could be a woman who laughs in an overly loud intrusive manner
By the way grumpy goat Grumbling That means complaining about something
For example he's always finding something to complain about—means he's constantly griping about something

The barn owl is someone who enjoys staying up late into
the night Staying up means remaining awake so not sleeping

A sweet tooth is someone who enjoys eating sweets frequently and in large amounts

The Peacock That's a striking peculiar individual
Someone who stands out in their surroundings due to unconventional ideas and an unorthodox way of life
or stands out through unusual clothing or similar is therefore a peacock
That sounds very beautiful A peacock
The party lion or party lioness Wow
That's someone who loves going to parties and thrives on attention
I've never been much for partying—I'd rather stay cozy at
home where I can have my peace
Are you a party lion or a party lioness
The party mouse is usually a woman who loves to celebrate
Compared to the party animal the focus here is less about
drawing attention and more about having fun while celebrating
The unlucky person is someone who often faces misfortune
The opposite would be the lucky one
Besides anyone wearing a lucky charm is a lucky person
The Raven Mother or also the Raven Father
That's someone who pays little attention to their children
However people usually refer to such a mother as a crow mother
because the mother usually has the strongest bond with the children
For instance I do everything I can to avoid being a wicked stepmother
