In this video I'll give you a few tips on how to expand your vocabulary especially
f you have little time or
feel like you're learning these words but they just don't stick
You also learn these words perhaps you've made a list and you're studying these words
by heart but when it comes to actually using these words spontaneously in conversation
Then you just freeze and suddenly you don't remember the word I learned yesterday
When you review your flashcards you immediately know—yes this word means
That word means that but in conversation you can't recall it anymore
And I know that feeling very very well
My name is Judith Bartomew I taught myself German independently and
I am currently learning two foreign languages Mandarin and German
I'm from France and I teach French and German at the university here
And yes I know that feeling very very well
You memorize these words and then out in conversation when you're actually speaking the
So you're just saying okay yes what's the word I actually just learned
And I must also tell you my dears I don’t
have any either—this is simply not the best approach right now
Likewise each person must personally explore what the best
method is for them
But I still want to share a method with you today
that has worked quite well for me yes in recent times
Maybe this approach won't work for
you but I still want to share it with you
That might help you with language learning which is indeed my goal with this YouTube channel
Yes I actually started learning German before with flashcards
I initially started studying with flashcards but made them out of paper
I've always made these flashcards
by hand and just studied them using slips of paper
And then at some point I just thought no it's really just effortless you know
It takes up a lot of time and for some reason I just can't make progress with this system
I can't always bring my flashcards so I need something else
Then I tried studying a bit with
Anki flashcards but I didn’t do that correctly
I also used Anki flashcards but I learned these words in isolation
I just wrote a word like "träumen " then used
the French translation and that was it—done
And I thought yes "dream" is
rêver in French okay I've got it now I can use this word
No I couldn't use that
word Why Because I didn't know
that "dream" always comes with a preposition—dream of
And then when I spoke I simply said I was dreaming something so
That was simply wrong that was simply wrong because
I didn't know it always comes with this preposition
That means if I were to use these flashcards again
right now I’d do it completely differently
I wouldn't learn these words in isolation you already know
that—never learn words in isolation it just doesn't work
You need to learn words with collocations such as verbs paired with specific other words for example
With verbs I'd never learn these words or verbs in isolation
You always need a preposition or a complete sentence
For example with the
verb give I give you a book so
But you can also though with other verbs it's not the case that you directly use the dative and
Accusative for example I was thinking of you you know
It's not that I think of you but rather that I've been thinking of you in this case
And if you try to learn these words in isolation
by yourself it won't work—I'm telling you that right now
This applies not only to German but also to other foreign languages
That's why with verbs always include the preposition or use a simple sentence
It doesn't have to be complicated—just use a normal sentence
So that was the first point
The second point which is also very important when learning a language while making flashcards
It won't work either if you try to learn these words without examples
You also need very specific examples but
those examples must be relevant to your goal
If your goal is to speak better for a job interview then
yes you should learn words that are relevant to your goal
And I say it again every time because it's hard for me too—look
For example I'll give you a very specific
instance yes You want to go shopping right
You go to the supermarket and then you go inside so then
you see the first section on the left is dairy products
There are dairy products there so you just take the dairy products like that
Then you keep going continue forward and now you'll see the meat section
Then you buy a bit of meat keep going find vegetables
and fruit and just keep moving through the store
And in the end you've bought everything then you come home uh and then at home the
You've unpacked everything so now you think hey but I've got it all now
bought but yes it somehow doesn't fit so now I have my prescription now I have
I just now read my prescription
and actually I don't have the products I need
And that's exactly how it happens when you learn a foreign language without a plan because look you're just learning
for instance you're sitting in a German class or a French class and the teacher
Say a word and then you think oh I don't know
this word then I absolutely must write it down and learn it
But what if this word is one you never use in your everyday life or one that belongs to you
If the goal doesn't match you'll memorize
this word by heart yes but you'll never actually use it
You will never use this word because you failed to recognize that
it doesn't align with your goal and holds no relevance for you
Dairy products are also good but in this case you might want to make a salad instead
And then yes if you've already bought milk you really don't need that
And then you burden your mind by learning
something you'll never actually use
And that's the mistake most beginners make when learning a foreign language
They're too scattered and they're learning all the
words because they think I need it I need it
First think about what
you need and why
Why do you want to learn this What is your goal
And yes there are also many people who memorize these words by heart
Also maybe they’ve then selected the right words and they learn those
Memorizing words with flashcards yes but they didn’t automate that
By automating I mean you have to repeat these
words over and over again and again endlessly
It's just like working out You want to get better
so you might try doing push-ups like
this How do you achieve that
You have to go to the gym
every day and try to do a
pull-up Every day every day Practice makes perfect
And that's exactly how language learning works—you must repeat
repeat count sentences to become more fluent and eloquent
and simply be able to speak better
It's just like at the gym
And if you'd like to join my German Fitness Studio it's not actually a gym
This is my German Fitness Studio
Here you learn with us to automate these words
You know you could learn on your own and you can do it by
yourself Really I'm telling you you can make it on your own
But that's exactly like preparing for a calisthenics competition
or in the realm of sports for example running
well you can obviously do that on your own
But I know from experience that it's difficult to do alone because you're always possibly
an excuse or yes it's simply nice being part of a
community together automate and repeat these sentences
That's exactly how you learn German—just
like learning to run or any other sport really
You just have to study and it works best in a group—like
for example if you've ever been to the gym before right
Maybe you've been to the gym before and I've
been there too—really put in a lot of work there
I do a lot of sports but I was alone at the gym and luckily I knew
ow to do a workout yes but at the beginning I followed my training pla
Followed through and I just trained alone trained alone but I'm very disciplined
For me it's fine but I've realized yes I need this now
It's a challenge and I also need motivation from others to keep me going
And then I found another gym which is a mix of fitness and
Cardio training and boxing—there I've truly found
a family It's genuinely a place where I can train
with others and stay motivated
I see the others ah they're making progress doing this doing
that then I can improve too and we can get better together
And the best part is there are training sessions meaning I don't have to figure out wha
What do I have to
do now do I have to do push-ups now
do I have to do squats now what exactly do I have to do No
I'm so busy in my life that I don't feel like
sitting down to think okay what's my training plan
Also I just go straight into training and follow the instructions I simply follow what needs to be done
The others do it and that's how it works—I've become as fit as I've ever been and
that's exactly how language learning works with us at the Language Learning Lounge
It's a training session you have a training plan and you just show up whenever
you have time—no need to wonder what you should learn next
No we do it our team does it for you and you follow along
Simple yes what we say and you repeat these words in small groups and at the end
every hour you've truly learned these words and that's what we do whe
If you'd like to join in feel free to become part of the community yes in Germa
Join in yes and I just wanted to revisit the topic of flashcard learning—it works
Yes flashcards work but you have to keep repeating them repeating them
Absolutely and for example you could create gap-fill exercises such as instead of
always writing the translation saying yes this is German and now it is
Take full sentences instead of isolated words whether French or English
just blanks like dreams about I dream I dream about no idea
from a school don't know me then blank blank from a school then me and
and if you repeat these words ah yes for example I dream of this school
also that means instead of me dreaming about writing about this school with the translation o
French or English just write I Blank Blank for two blanks
because I dream of so those are two words I blank blank of this school for example and
is definitely more effective than using these flashcards in isolation
Flashcards isolate these words for learning Exactly that's what I wanted to tell you today my
Take words If you want to learn with me you're welcome to do so there are
A link in the video description and otherwise see
you again next week—yes have a productive week Ciao
