Personal note: Thanks for following along. After the medical specialists I had seen for my own health issues failed, I found a Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner that changed my life. My life mission is to show the world the clinical power and healing philosophy of TCM, to change the lives of as many as possible while I live.
Imagine if there was a single exercise
that didn't require equipment, a gym, or
medication that can improve your energy,
calm your mind, strengthen your immune
system, and literally help your body
heal itself from the inside out. Now, it
sounds too good to be true, I know, but
for thousands of years in China, doctors
and monks have sworn by this one Chiong
practice, calling it the secret to
preventing disease, extending life, and
keeping the body young. Now, today I'm
going to show you this quote miracle
chiong exercise, explain why it's so
powerful, and guide you through it step
by step so you can experience the
effects for yourself. Hey guys, I'm Dr.
Alex Hine, board licensed doctor of
acupuncture and nutritional Chinese
medicine and author of the health book
Master the Day. Let's jump in. You know,
when I was living in China, I lived in a
city called Beijing. And I found this
book by a man named Yu Yong Yen. And
this book was just of this old Chinese
guy standing like this next to a giant
tree. And I just thought this was one of
those funny things that old Chinese
people do in China in the park like
Taichi or something. And when I opened
his book and I bought it in the
bookstore, I actually found an English
translation in the West. And what Yun
Yong Yen was talking about was [music]
he was actually running studies on the
power of Chiong to pretty much improve
specific health symptoms that people
were having that were elderly. So he was
studying high blood pressure,
circulatory problems, blood sugar
issues, sleep, anxiety, and depression.
and he was actually running trials with
patients in hospitals [music] doing this
standing chiong. Now, what was so weird
about it was the chiong wasn't like
something that's you could see how it
gets the blood flow going and you
understand how it's exercise. Now,
what's so unique and weird about this
kind of chiong is you would think they
were doing these very animated motions,
right? That you could see how obviously
improved health. But unlike traditional
exercise, the whole chiong was called
standing like a tree. So literally this
was the chigong. You stand here like
this doing certain breathing and
occasionally change posture here, here,
here, and you stand there for 30 minutes
to an hour. And they were reporting
these amazing health benefits. So, you
might be wondering, how could one weird
exercise like that where you're not
moving heal everything in the body? Now,
here's the secret. It's not about
targeting one symptom or one disease.
It's about restoring what Chinese
medicine calls the flow ofqi, your
body's vital physiology. So, think about
a river, for example. When the water
flows smoothly, the land around it is
fertile, green, and full of life. But if
the river gets blocked, the water
stagnates, disease and decay start to
set in. So in Chinese medicine, ancient
doctors noticed this. [music] Disease is
exactly the same because when what we
call chi flows, I think of chi as
unobstructed physiology, [music] proper
physiological flow. Now, the modern
science even supports this for chiong.
Chiong lowers stress hormones, improves
your circulation, enhances immunity, and
balances your nervous system. And that's
why people practicing it regularly
report everything from better sleep,
fewer colds, improved digestion, even
relief from chronic pain and anxiety. So
in a way, the benefits are very similar
to someone who develops a really serious
exercise regimen. So Chiong works by
restoring flow. The real question
becomes this, where is your flow
actually disrupted? For some people,
it's digestion and energy, and for
others, it's stress, hormones, sleep, or
anxiety. But for many, it's a
combination that they've never really
been shown how to properly identify.
Now, that's why I created a short root
cause quiz below this video. It helps
you understand which system in your body
is the most out of balance right now, so
you're not just doing random practices
for better health, but the right ones
for your physiology. So, you can go to

clinic or check out the link below this
video. All right, let's actually learn
this exercise together. Here, I'm going
to cut to a scene here of me
demonstrating the standing like a tree.
This beautiful video we shot in a park
here in springtime. The standing chigong
is called janjuang. It's called universe
stance or standing like a tree. And what
I'm going to do is just demo it while
we're talking about it at the same time.
So for universe stance, what I want you
to do is you're just going to close your
eyes. And again, we're going to adopt a,
you know, neutral spine here. Remember
the same thing from before, the string
from the head.
Relax the pelvis. So you're not feeling
an arched back or a hunched back here.
And we're relaxing like this. tucking
the pelvis. So you shouldn't feel
pinching anywhere in your low back.
Should feel the weight in your legs
here, right? As the primary area where
it is. And then from there,
what we're going to do is universe
stance basically involves you bringing
up your hands like this. Standing chiong
is very unique because the entire
purpose is to not generate any external
movement, but just pay attention to
internal movement. So, we're going to
bring the hands up about
shoulder width here,
[snorts] and we're going to
have the palms face you. You should feel
like you're holding a big beach ball.
All right? So, beach ball. Imagine the
beach ball pressing, pressing out,
pressing out, pressing out. Right? And
then just pay attention to where you're
feeling discomfort. And then make sure
palms facing inward, not flat. inward,
thumbs up, right? Again, like you're
holding a ball. Active, like a kind of
active visualization here. And then you
want to drop your shoulders and make
sure we go back to the core posture. And
we're standing here like this.
So, as we're doing this
and you're hearing the birds singing
around me,
start by
just paying attention to your breathing
and your shoulders.
So, we're slowing the breathing.
Lengthen the breath.
I'm paying attention to tension in my
neck, in my jaw.
Breathing in,
breathing out.
I'm paying attention to any urge to
fidget, right? Fidgeting hands,
fidgeting shoulders.
We're feeling the beach ball still.
Right. I'm feeling that active
resistance as if there's a ball here
pushing out.
And I'm paying attention to the
shoulders.
Feeling
the warmth in the hands here.
I'm just listening to the birds around
me,
the bees.
sinking the shoulders. You might
noticing them burning a little bit now.
So, we're paying attention to the head
from the string. Neutral pelvis.
Deeper, more rhythmic breathing.
Lengthening the breathing.
Improving the breathing.
Don't let the burning in the shoulders
worry you.
And the goal here is to minimize any
external movement. No fidgeting. Don't
move at all.
And lengthen the breath more and more
and more.
And when you're ready, you can bring the
arms down,
shake them out,
and just relax.
Now, this practice is called januang or
standing like a tree. And the funny
thing about it is on the surface it
looks sort of cheesy and simple. You
just stand there, but inside it's one of
the most powerful healing practices in
Chigong. And the main way I recommend
doing it is you stand with your feet
shoulderwidth apart. Slightly bend your
knees as if you're about to sit in a
chair. Relax your shoulders. Tuck your
chin slightly and lengthen your spine.
Now, close your eyes and imagine you're
hugging [music] a tree with your arms
rounded in front of your chest. Palms
inward, elbows [music] heavy. Close your
eyes. Breathe slowly in and out through
the nose and feel your breath sink all
the way down to your belly. Now, you can
do this standing exercise for 10
minutes, but I would recommend if
[clears throat] you can get up to 20 or
30 minutes a day, you'll see really
substantial [music] benefits. When I
first learned this practice, my teacher
said to me, "If you stand like this
every day for 10 minutes, your body will
become like a mountain, stable, calm,
and unshakable." At first, I thought it
was just some corny Chinese poetry
thing, but then I noticed my patients
who practice it actually healed faster.
[music] They got sick much less and they
were actually much much calmer in their
daily lives. And a benefit of this is
it's not hard on the joints. So, it's
good for people who have joint issues or
are older. Now, all of us are different
and so what you may need may be
something for blood pressure or for
digestion. And that's why no single
exercise, supplement, or biohack works
[music] for everyone. The method only
works when it matches the root cause.
So, if you want clarity in what's
actually driving your symptoms, whether
it is stress hormones, digestion,
nervous system imbalances, or a deeper
level of exhaustion from how your life's
been, I've included a free root cause
quiz below this video. There's the first
link right below here, or just go to dr.
alexhine.com/quiz.
And it's the same exact framework I use
clinically to decide where to start with
my patients. Now, I want to leave you
here with a challenge. Practice this one
chiong exercise for just 10 minutes a
day. Do it for a week and notice how
your body feels. And I want to reiterate
that sometimes the most miraculous
solutions are not complicated. [music]
They're simple, consistent, and they're
rooted in wisdom that's been around for
thousands of years. And this simple
chiong, don't be fooled, can really
change your cardiovascular health and
your energy and sleep, but only if you
do it daily. Now, if you're not sure
where else to start with chiong, one of
the best practices is this [music] intro
chiong exercise in a related video I
shot here.
