What's up guys, this is Shoa Darvish.
Today we're going to throw a quick, little light bullpen.
And I'm hanging out in the city with my boy Ethan Lee.
Let's do it. Let's do it.
It's going to be my first bullpen of the offseason.
So, just throw strikes and focus on mechanics.
Really getting mobile. I'm focused on really, I work with Trent Athletics.
So, our big focus is getting mobile.
I've changed a lot of my mechanics since the summer.
I was super over the top.
I changed to a three-quarter kind of sidearm arm slot.
I'm changing everything. How my hips rotate.
How my glove side works.
How my body shifts towards the home plate.
Where the direction goes. Where the energy goes.
I'm trying to fix that for sure.
Can we get a little glimpse of the mechanics right now?
Right now?
You know, I'm trying to copy Brian Newell mechanics right now.
Like this.
Go up.
Shift my weight this way.
First impression, I mean, there's a lot of diversity.
It's not common all over the country.
Just like a blend of many cultures, which is really, really cool.
Maybe after I'm done with baseball.
It's kind of hard to play baseball around here.
Maybe after I'm done.
This isn't my gamer this year.
I'll show you my gamers later.
This is my pops model.
He didn't want it, so he just gave it to me.
Got a cool design.
A6.
Really cool pitching glove.
Let me show you my gamer this year.
Got a little peacock.
Cool design.
Oh, that's fire.
I'm still deciding which one to eat. This one or this one.
Just cool design, man.
And the leather is like insane.
Top notch.
Top notch. Better than Wilson, better than Rawlings.
Oh, that's a shell.
This is like five years old, but it's still in perfect condition.
If someone wanted to buy a glove like this, where could they buy an A6 glove?
I don't think you can.
I don't think you can buy this model.
It's like a special edition?
It's my dad's.
How will people buy A6 gloves?
I don't know. I guess Japanese website.
Online?
Online or go to Japan.
11U Formula Derby in Branson, Missouri.
I was a really good hitter, so they picked me as a candidate for my team.
It's kind of like a Cooper sound, but it's in Branson, Missouri.
And I remember hitting four bombs in a row.
It was an insane feeling.
I think I have a really good slider.
I guess it's like...
I'm only saying it because it's me, but I think I have one of the best sliders in my class.
I think it's like a true sweeper of mine.
For some reason, mine just moves a lot horizontally.
It has a lot of horizontal break.
I can get up to around 20, so 20 inches horizontal break.
I think it's one of the best fish that I have.
I saw this off Paul Skeens a couple years ago.
There's a lot of tension right here and right here.
And just rip it.
Having a stiff wrist and yanking it across like a fastball.
It kind of just moves just like that.
I tell you this all the time, right?
There's got to be something wrong if I don't throw a 99.
There's nothing wrong.
I can show you our techs right now.
I always tell him that his mechanics are good.
But maybe...
If I had to say one thing...
I really can't think of anything.
Maybe something with his legs.
I don't know.
I can't really think of anything.
I don't know.
Okay, for you to throw 99...
Maybe a higher arm slot.
What do you have to do?
I don't know. I'm so far off on 99.
It's hard to say.
I feel like a higher arm slot.
I think the low 3 quarters is maybe taking a little VLO off.
I don't think so.
I think so.
I think my VLO increased because I lowered my arm slot.
You think so?
Yeah.
I have a high 3 quarter arm slot.
Because when I drop down, it's not as hard.
But when I'm high 3 quarters, that's when I have my max VLO.
Two different opposites, I guess.
Actually, freshman year of high school,
we had a mutual friend named Andrew Coyle.
He was on FaceTime with Ethan Lee.
I just said, what's up to him?
The first thing I remember was his dad.
He was talking to Duke at the time, freshman year.
His dad told Duke he's not good enough.
His own dad told Duke he's not good enough.
Yeah, crazy times, I guess.
Look at this.
Over 3 years ago, shohei.
Over 3 years.
We've known each other for a while.
This one, shohei, has long hair.
Wait, let me see.
Why are you showing him that?
You should have danced for 2 hours.
I'm going to get quit today.
I used to be fluent in French, Japanese, and English.
I used to know more French than English at one point.
I went to an all-French school from 1st to 4th grade.
That's pretty interesting, I feel like.
Can we hear something?
I can't speak anymore.
You lost it?
I lost it.
If you remember my mom's cooking,
it's a Japanese food called chicken namban.
It's like fried chicken.
It has a sweet sauce on it.
It has mayo, egg, and tartare on top.
If you eat it with rice and kimchi,
nothing can beat that.
I got 2 dogs.
3 of my dogs died last year.
I had 5, and I slimmed down to 2.
I also got 3 birds.
3 birds?
Yeah, 3 birds.
What type of birds?
I don't really know.
I don't know the name.
Can you make bird sounds?
Come on, bird sounds?
Are you going to put this in the video?
Birdie, birdie, birdie.
That's bad, that's bad.
Don't put that in.
I say following examples of big leaguers.
Nowadays, there's a lot of resources out there.
A lot of YouTube channels,
and a lot of pro guys giving advice.
I think the number one thing is
learning from the guys who already made it to the top.
Taking it from there.
There's a lot of resources online nowadays.
I really liked Trevor Bauer when I was growing up.
I was obsessed with his vlogs and videos.
I think I learned a lot from him.
I also learned a lot from my dad.
He teaches me a lot.
Nowadays, I really like Brian Nguyeh.
He's my favorite pitcher.
Learning from him, what he does.
I think it's not really what you do.
It's the mindset.
Those guys, you can see,
they're obsessed with the game.
Trevor Bauer, Brian Nguyeh, my dad,
they're obsessed and obsessed.
I think you have to be obsessed with the game
in order to succeed.
They sacrifice their time,
their body, and even their family time.
Their free time to really dedicate to their sport.
I think that's what I learned from those videos.
I can't just nitpick.
I feel like working out today,
so I'm going to work out today.
No, you have to be obsessed even when you don't want to.
You have to work out and be productive.
I guess also working hard.
Also, being with the guys.
A lot of these guys, I won't see ever.
A lot of my boys have been cherishing
our last moments together.
Hopefully, we win state.
I think we have a really talented squad.
Probably, in my opinion,
the most talented squad in San Diego.
Cherishing the moment, but also competing hard
and running for state.
Who are some of the guys on your team?
Some dogs on my team.
We got the twins, the Harrington twins,
Alex and Hunter.
They're dogs.
Some juniors, Josh and Jose.
All these guys could get drafted.
We got some other pitchers,
like Kaden Kuhn.
He's a Cornell commit.
We got some Columbia commit,
like Ty Daniels.
Shout out Trey Kotze.
Princeton commit.
We got everybody.
I think this is a really, really talented squad.
Something that San Diego hasn't seen in a while.
They came to my UCSD.
They came to my games.
They really believe in me.
Their coaching staff is really good.
Matt Harvey is their pitching coach.
He really, really believes in me.
Out of all the coaches I ever talked to,
he showed the most interest.
I was looking for a coaching staff that I can trust.
I thought I was in the right place when I saw him,
when I talked to him for the first time.
I have a set plan, set throwing program,
set lifting program, set everything.
I feel like as a freshman, I was working hard,
but not smart.
I think I started working smart recently, this summer.
That's when I actually started working smart
and having intent in every warm-up,
having intent in every throw,
having intent in every workout in the gym.
I feel like back then when I was an underclassman
versus a sophomore, I just worked hard.
I was in the gym lifting weights
and just throwing to throw.
Throwing plows just to throw.
You're obviously not going to succeed
doing that.
There's way too much talented guys out there right now
to wasting your time on that.
You just got to work smarter, but also hard as well.
I think you can find online, YouTube.
I've seen some pretty good programs out there.
Lifting, YouTube has everything.
I guess online and learning from the best
and researching on your own, I guess.
Is there anything else besides baseball
that you've learned from YouTube?
I've actually been watching a lot of TEDx videos.
It's about how to be more articulate,
how to represent yourself well to people,
your first expression and first impression.
I've been watching a lot on how to body language
and just being better at communicating with people.
I used to struggle with that.
I used to be pretty awkward.
I've been watching how to talk to people.
I don't think anything can beat San Diego.
The weather, especially from my point of view.
I'm a baseball player.
You get to play baseball all year round.
If you feel like you can just go to the beach,
if you feel like you can go to a really nice restaurant,
there's everything in San Diego.
If you want the city life, you can go to downtown San Diego.
What's the best thing to eat in San Diego?
There's this restaurant called Sushi Ota.
It's a sushi restaurant me and my family love there.
We go there pretty often. It's really, really good.
Thank you guys for watching our half a day in the life.
That's hard.
See you next time.
