Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to Fort Lauderdale, Florida,
home of the Swimming World Hall of Fame. This is without a doubt,
one of my absolute favorite pools in the entire world. Maybe top five,
definitely top five. What am I saying? Definitely top five today. Today,
I'm doing a little coaching, doing a little racing,
working with some young athletes, some fellow Canadians. I'm half Canadian.
If you didn't know that, we're going to have some fun.
I'm going to race every single one of these guys today.
And I told them to get in the water. They're already running late. Ready? Go.
You guys are already late. Come on guys. Come on. Ready? Go. Ready? Go.
I'm just giving them a hard time. There's no timeline on this. We're doing fine.
I'm going to run them through a little workout.
We're going to work on all strokes. We're going to do a little set.
And then I got to get off the blocks in this pool at least a few times.
So I promise them we're going to race a 50 of every stroke.
We're about to race a 50 free. Good luck everyone. This is going to hurt me.
This is a long, this is a long way to race. That's a big, that's a long pool.
I'm in Florida for the day because an athlete on this swim team Torch Swim
Club based out of Toronto, Canada told their coach to reach out to me.
The coach sent me an email and a few weeks later,
here I am running these athletes through a fun little workout just a few weeks
before their big championship meet.
Traveling around and putting on events like this is one of my favorite things in
the entire world to do. Pretty good 50 free.
We're on the 50 backstroke for time.
And we're going to put the best backstrokers next to me.
I don't know what I'm going to go on 50 back today. We're going to find out.
I'll take this line. Well, I can't put the GoPro down there, but that's fine.
Are we set? Are we locked in? I may or may not violate 50 meters.
We'll find out. I'm gauging you. I'm going off of you.
Now I'm no longer in Olympic caliber shape,
but I still swim a lot and I'm still pretty fast.
And when I race athletes at events like this,
I usually try to keep the race close. I usually try to pace people, you know,
in the 50 free you just saw a second ago, I was trying to pace the guy.
And he actually, I think ended up going a best time in this 50 back.
I took out the lead and then I started to slow my tempo down right here to see
if they could close on me a little bit.
Cause a lot of times at the end of the race, when you can see somebody,
you get that little edge to finish strong.
Dude, we got to be happy with that. That's like right on your best time, right?
That's awesome. That was a win. That's all I got. The underwater,
that's my strength. Once I come up and swim, it goes downhill quick.
Look at that coach. Your coach is coaching me up right now. Oh yeah, that's right.
Yes. Put me in the 100 back. That was good. Do a little bit of butterfly.
Hey, good luck. 50 fly. These kids are fast, man.
For this practice,
I ran the athletes through a typical dynamic land dry land warmup so that we
could hop in and just start going fast.
I spent about 20 minutes on each stroke working on skill work. So for example,
the backstroke portion, we worked on having a tight, skinny kick,
a full rotation of the shoulders, fast arm drills.
I like taking people through all kinds of different drills,
things that they typically haven't done before takes you out of your comfort
zone. Gets a little weird. I often say squirrely.
Yeah. I was kind of just waiting to see if you were going to move up on the
middle. That was good. That was like right on your best time.
You said I was 26. I'll take that. We're doing good.
I think it's just being out in the sun. All right. It's butterfly time.
All right. It's breaststroke time now. We're going to go over timing. Okay.
Hold that for me. What are you doing? Don't act like you've held a camera before.
All right. Okay. So key to breaststroke,
even high tempo breaststroke is having a separation between the kick and the
pull.
Meaning that you don't start the propulsion phase of the kick until you've hit
the line. So you do the breaststroke pull, you shoot forward fast,
your legs are loading. And then once you've hit the line,
that's when your legs are in the ready position and you start the propulsion.
Once you've already shot forward.
The most common mistake in breaststroke is people are doing this motion.
They're recovering, they're shooting forward,
and they've already started kicking.
So you're kicking in a less than optimal position.
Breaststroke is about maximizing efficiency. We do that by minimizing drag.
The way to minimize drag is start the propulsion of the kick once you've hit
that line. And it takes a long time to master. Like it's,
it doesn't change overnight, but if you can,
if you can have just a slight change in that timing of the kick to the,
between the pull and the kick, you'll get faster. But for sure,
that's my big takeaway. Now it's race. It's go time. You want to go next to me?
You've been waiting. Let's put you next to me. You're a breaststroker, right?
No, no, no. Put them in there. Put them in there. Good luck. Good luck.
Are you a hundred breaststroker? Yeah, this is going to be good.
This is going to be good.
The dude to my left above me is actually a lifeguard there at the pool who
happened to be a breaststroker who swam in college. And I was like, Hey bro,
hop in. Let's race. Before we raced this 50th breaststroke,
I spent about 30 minutes with the athletes working on the kick,
the pull and the timing, the speed variations of the pull,
how wide versus how narrow the timing,
all the little details that are super important in making a fast breaststroker.
Of all the things I teach, this is certainly my specialty.
I am a decent breaststroker and I think a pretty good communicator.
I was pretty surprised at how fast I went in this 50. 29.2 is pretty good.
Thank you. I'm fine. We had a couple of best times racing me. So that's a win.
That's good. It means I did something right. Serious question.
Let me know in the comments below what you think of these sunglasses.
I think they are incredible and they look cool,
but Allie and a number of people hate them. They're very polarizing.
So I don't know.
Big thanks to Shawna from torch swimming for bringing me out to Florida to coach
the group for a day. And I can't wait to come to Toronto sometime.
That's a city I've never been to before, which is kind of crazy.
I've never been there before, but anyway,
speaking of places I've never been before operation 50 miles in 50 States is a go.
I'm heading to Alaska in just over a month.
I've got a number of very exciting events scheduled.
I do have around 15 States that I still need to schedule.
So if you are interested in bringing me out for a swim clinic, a speaking event,
a coaching session, something like that,
send me an email to Cody Miller show at gmail.com.
And I will respond. I'm also starting to book events for next year.
So later on, go ahead and send us an email. Now,
when I got home from Florida,
the first thing I did was take the boys to the swimming pool.
We went to the lap pool to get some laps in and we found, Oh,
we found a new pet. Everybody meet jumpy.
He's the newest member of the Miller family. He is a green Indiana frog.
They like swampy Lake areas, hence finding him right by our house.
My little boys have been playing with him nonstop. Like continuous.
He is just absolutely adorable. Good job, Kato. Good job, buddy. Okay.
We caught some fish just off of our dock to feed him.
Some more. All right. Hey, we got enough to feed the frog. Let's go.
It's really been the most exciting part of our week.
Now Lego has been a little jealous of all the attention that the frog has been
getting. So he's been asking for more belly rubs during the day.
It's okay, buddy. It's okay.
