I'm telling you straight: you'll never heal your kidneys if you keep eating these 22 foods
Once kidney problems arise it's time to abandon the old diet
In my daily practice I make it clear: all refined foods must go sugar should be eliminated and you need to let go of canned food and fast food
The list of forbidden items is long and will shock you as many of them are considered extremely healthy
In this video I reveal everything you must avoid if you have kidney disease
At the same time I’ll show you smart ways to still enjoy certain foods without sacrificing your health
Please stay with us until the end because the right choice of food completely depends on the stage of your illness
And to all those who think their kidneys are perfectly healthy proceed with caution
Approximately 90% of those affected are unaware of their condition as the symptoms are so nonspecific
The real danger lies in the fact that damaged kidneys can no longer adequately filter out phosphorus potassium and salt
I ask you to envision your kidneys as the ultimate guardians of your body
These fist-sized organs work tirelessly day and night to keep your blood clean
Yet here lies the bitter truth I must explain to my patients time and again
The kidney is a silent organ it doesn't cry out for help when it weakens
It doesn't cause the sharp pain of an infected tooth
People often only realize something is wrong when filter performance has already declined significantly
It's a gradual process an invisible threat affecting nearly one in ten adults
Now we need to discuss a topic that often causes confusion: minerals
In the world of health phosphorus potassium and salt are typically regarded as heroes
Potassium is essential for your muscles and heart Phosphorus strengthens your bones
Salt helps regulate your body's fluid balance A healthy body needs these substances daily to function optimally
And precisely here lies the great paradox of kidney health
What is essential for a healthy person's survival can become a slow poison for someone with weakened kidneys
Why is that When the kidneys are healthy they maintain everything in balance
Excess potassium is simply excreted through urine
However once the tiny filtering units the nephrons become scarred or damaged these substances start to accumulate in the blood
An elevated potassium level can throw your heart out of rhythm while excessive phosphorus paradoxically weakens your bones by literally pulling calcium out of your body
It's a vicious cycle that can only be broken through knowledge—and that's where I come in
Good afternoon my name is Dr Müller In my practice I see patients every day who are utterly stunned when they look at their blood test results
They tell me but Doctor I do eat so much fruit and whole grains
This is precisely where the critical mistake lies Understanding is the first step toward healing
I always explain to my patients that their kidneys are like a sieve that has developed fine cracks over the years
If we now pour coarse sand in the form of fake food through the system the damage will only grow worse
That's why today we'll learn together how to ease their kidneys' workload instead of pushing them further
What's important to emphasize is that this isn't about giving up everything that tastes good—it's about making smart choices
I strongly warn against being misled by superficial advice a kidney-friendly diet is complex and must always be tailored to the individual
But one thing holds true for everyone: anyone who continues to consume these 22 foods blindly is putting their health at risk
Now is the time to take responsibility and heed your
body's warning signs before the filters completely fail
In this chapter I've laid the foundation together with you
They now understand that danger often remains invisible and that minerals take on entirely new significance for kidneys affected by disease
In the following sections I’ll take you deep into the details and show you which so-called healthy foods you’ll need to look at with entirely new eyes from today onward
You absolutely must take action because knowledge is the best protection for your kidneys
Welcome back on our journey through the inner world of your kidneys
We already understand why these small organs are so sensitive
Now is the time to examine the supermarket shopping cart through the eyes of a kidney specialist
Today I'm talking with you about the first group of the 22 foods
fruits and vegetables For most people they symbolize health
Yet for you they could be the invisible enemies lurking in your kitchen
1 The avocado The fatty trap from the tropics
The avocado has enjoyed a remarkable rise in German kitchens over the past decade whether on whole grain bread or in salads
We love their creamy texture
I also explain to my patients that it is rich in heart-healthy monounsaturated fats as well as vitamins E and K
However for people with kidney issues it poses a
highly concentrated risk The main concern is potassium
A single average-sized avocado contains nearly 1 000 mg of potassium
Considering that a patient in the advanced stage of kidney disease is often allowed to consume only 2 000 to 3 000 mg of potassium per day
Just one avocado covers half of the recommended daily intake
Imagine eating them for breakfast—what would you have left for the rest of the day Almost nothing
I strongly warn my patients
When potassium is no longer adequately excreted it builds up an electrical charge inside your cells
The heart is especially sensitive to this
Many of my patients tell me they experience a strange tingling in their fingertips or skipped heartbeats after eating potassium-rich meals
My tip for limiting damage if you absolutely can't give up avocados is to eat no more than an eighth or a quarter of one
A little preparation trick I’d like to share: slice the avocado into very thin pieces and soak them in cold water for about two hours
This at least washes out some of the potassium even if the texture underneath suffers somewhat
2 The banana The yellow risk for the heart
There's hardly a more practical fruit than the banana—it comes wrapped in its own natural packaging and provides a quick energy boost
But from a medical standpoint I know the banana is a true potassium bomb
With over 400 mg of potassium per fruit it poses a serious risk for people with chronic kidney disease
We tend to snack on bananas quickly between meals
However in cases of reduced kidney function this can lead to a rapid increase in blood potassium levels
A condition we physicians call hyperkalemia
The symptoms are deceptive—muscle weakness that feels like heavy legs or sudden unexplained fatigue
That's why I advise my patients to opt for apples or berries instead
A serving of blueberries provides valuable antioxidants without putting your heart at risk from excessive potassium
If you've been using bananas in smoothies up to now swap them for frozen cauliflower
It sounds unusual but it makes the smoothie creamy without altering the taste and is significantly gentler on the kidneys
3 Apricots A dried danger in pocket-sized form
Fresh apricots are something wonderful in summer
But I must specifically address the dried variety
Why are dried fruits so dangerous Quite simply
By removing water all ingredients become concentrated
One dried apricot contains nearly as much potassium as
a fresh one yet it is much smaller
This means we end up consuming far more of it in a short period of time
I always tell my patients that dried fruit is like little batteries packed with potassium and sugar
They not only strain the kidneys with minerals but also cause blood sugar levels to rise
And precisely that further damages the delicate blood vessels in the kidney
If you're craving stone fruit during winter I recommend eating fresh apricots only in very small amounts or opting for pears instead
4 Oranges and orange juice
The liquid pressure
Many of us grew up believing that a glass of orange juice in the morning is the very essence of health
However he is pure stress for her kidneys
One glass of orange juice contains the nutrients from three to four oranges but without the fiber that would otherwise slow down absorption
Potassium thus enters the bloodstream directly
Another serious issue arises Oxalates
Oranges contain these compounds which can combine with calcium to form painful kidney stones
I therefore emphasize clearly: drink water with a splash of fresh lemon instead
Citric acid may even help prevent certain types of kidney
stones whereas orange juice promotes their formation
5 Dried fruits
When water is lacking
Not only apricots but also raisins dates and plums can be problematic for kidney patients
As they dry these fruits lose their natural sense of fullness
When we eat a fresh plum we feel satisfied
Eating five dried plums hardly registers yet we've
consumed five times the amount of potassium and sugar
In addition industrially produced dried fruits often contain preservatives such as sulfur dioxide
potentially aggravate sensitive stomachs and kidneys as well
Therefore I recommend sticking to fresh juicy fruits like watermelon or grapes
They simultaneously support the body's hydration a crucial factor for kidney function
6 Spinach
The king of oxalates
and the story of Hans
Now we come to one of the most dangerous points on our list
Spinach is considered one of the healthiest vegetables around
However it can become extremely dangerous for people with kidney issues
Here it's less about potassium and more about oxalates
I'd like to tell you the story of Hans Hans was a
sprightly retiree from the Black Forest and very proud of his own ecological garden
He lived by the motto Green is life One day
in May he harvested a large quantity of sorrel
botanically related to spinach and even higher in oxalic acid
From this he cooked a highly concentrated green soup and ate two large bowls of it
Just a few hours later Hans complained of severe flank pain and
nausea He turned pale and cold sweat broke out on his forehead
It turned out to be acute kidney failure in the emergency room
What had happened
I always explain it to my patients in a vid illustrative way
The oxalates in this soup were so concentrated that they formed crystals in the urine immediately
These crystals are microscopically sharp and can damage and block the tubules of the kidneys
In medicine we call this oxalate nephropathy
Hans had to undergo dialysis for several weeks
He was lucky to survive but his kidney function remained permanently impaired
Today he can no longer eat spinach Swiss chard or rhubarb
I therefore urge you strongly
Cooking reduces the oxalate content of spinach only slightly
If you'd like to eat green vegetables I recommend kale or endive salad
They contain only a fraction of the oxalates and are significantly gentler on the kidneys
7 Potatoes and sweet potatoes the deceptive satisfaction
In Germany the potato is a true national treasure
Medically speaking however it ranks among the greatest sources of potassium in our diet
One large baked potato provides nearly 600 mg
of potassium Sweet potatoes contain even more
But I also have some good news for all potato lovers
In my practice I explain a method that significantly
reduces potassium levels—the so-called watering technique
That's how I proceed and that's how I recommend it to my patients
1 Peel the potatoes completely
2 Cut them into as thin slices or small cubes as possible
3 Soak these pieces in warm water for at least 2 to 4 hours
The water draws the potassium out of the tuber like a magnet
4 Pour the water away completely
Never use it again
5 Then boil the potatoes in plenty of fresh water
Using this method potatoes can lose up to 50% of their potassium content
I strongly advise against fries or chips as they contain not
only high levels of potassium but are also excessively salty
Salt raises blood pressure and high blood pressure damages the kidneys' delicate filtering system
8 Tomatoes and tomato products – the red danger
Tomatoes are known for their positive effects on the immune system
However I must continually emphasize that its potassium content must not be underestimated
Concentrated tomato products such as tomato paste passata ketchup or tomato juice are particularly hazardous
A small jar of tomato paste contains the potassium equivalent of about ten fresh tomatoes
In my practice I often see patients puzzled by the fact tha
why their blood levels rise even though they've only eaten a small portion of pasta
Most often the cause lies in the hidden sauce
Therefore I recommend replacing tomato sauce with pesto but without adding too much cheese or nuts
or with olive oil infused with garlic and fresh herbs
These alternatives are significantly gentler on the kidneys
Ginger cumbers sauerkraut and kimchi are considered excellent for gut flora
However they are highly problematic for the affected person's blood pressure and kidneys
A large pickled cumber can contain over 700 milligrams of sodium
Excess salt forces the kidneys to constantly struggle against elevated pressure
I explain this to my patients this way
High blood pressure is like a heavy hammer relentlessly pounding the delicate filters of the kidney
Eventually you won't be able to withstand it anymore
If you enjoy a tangy flavor I recommend fresh cumbers with a touch of vinegar and herbs instead of pickled varieties
So take care of your kidneys while still enjoying the familiar taste
Welcome back for our in-depth analysis
We have now left the garden of nature and entered the brightly lit aisles
of supermarkets— the world of colorful packaging and instant gratification
In this chapter I expose eleven more foods that are ubiquitous in modern diets
I'll explain how the food industry uses substances that appear harmless to healthy individuals
but for their kidneys it feels like a chemical siege
It's important to me to make the molecular underpinnings clear to you today
so you won't blindly fall into the trap of convenience ever again
10 Soda and the Phosphates Floodwave
I must begin with the most dangerous liquid
product of our time: soda and soft drinks
It's not just the sugar that puts strain on your pancreas
The phosphoric acid it contains poses a significantly greater concern for your kidneys
I explain to my patients a fundamental secret
of biochemistry Imagine phosphorus as a fuel
In natural foods such as meat or beans this phosphorus is bound in organic form
like a thick tree trunk that the body must painstakingly
break down Only about 40 to 60 percent of it is absorbed
Phosphate in soda on the other hand is like gasoline—it's inorganic instantly
available and absorbed directly into the bloodstream at 100 percent efficiency
Drinking a can of dark soda triggers a full-blown phosphate surge in your body
Since your kidneys cannot eliminate this excess quickly
enough your blood phosphorus levels rise dangerously
At this moment the body switches into emergency mode
releasing a hormone that draws calcium directly from the bones
o restore balance in the blood
The result is a distressing phenomenon that many of my patients are familiar with
The so-called kidney itch Affected individuals describe to me a
sensation as if millions of tiny insects were crawling beneath their skin
I've seen patients driven to desperation who scratched their skin raw
As the skin suffers the bones become porous Their density
decreases causing them to fracture even under minimal stress
A minor fall can be life-altering for a kidney patient who regularly drinks soda
Moreover I absolutely must talk about the diet trap
Many people over 60 believe they're doing themselves a favor by switching to sugar-free drinks
However artificial sweeteners like aspartame or saccharin damage gut flora and increase insulin resistance
Studies clearly show that daily consumption of diet soda can increase the risk of type 2 diabetes by nearly 70%
And diabetes as I continually explain to my patients is
The most common cause of scarring and death of nephrons the kidney's delicate filtering units
Elf alcohol the dehydrating focus of inflammation
In our culture having a glass of wine in the evening or a beer after work is deeply ingrained
From a medical standpoint alcohol is a direct toxin to the kidneys
It impairs the kidneys' ability to maintain water and electrolyte balance
Alcohol suppresses a hormone called ADH which normally signals the kidneys to retain water in the body
Without this signal the kidneys uncontrollably excrete water
The result is severe dehydration
The blood becomes thick almost like syrup Let me
explain it this way
The kidneys now have to work under extreme pressure to push this thick blood through the tiny capillaries
This internal high pressure causes microscopic cracks in the filters
Additionally I caution against its toxic effects
Alcohol causes inflammation in the kidney tubules
If kidney function is already impaired each glass of alcohol acts like a accelerant fueling the progression of the disease
Instead I recommend herbal teas or water infused with
cumber slices Your kidneys will thank you with a longer life
12 Almonds and cashews The stone risk
Almonds and cashews are considered healthy snacks and are very popular in Germany as student food
They provide vitamins and unsaturated fatty acids
However they pose a serious risk for individuals with a history of kidney stones or impaired kidney function
We encounter another familiar problematic compound here
Oxalate Almonds contain particularly high levels of oxalic acid
When these oxalates are excreted through urine they bind with calcium and form sharp jagged crystals
I explain this image to my patients Imagine these crystals
as tiny sea urchins moving through the delicate tubules of their kidneys
They cause inflammation scar tissue formation and ultimately the dreaded kidney stones
A gram of almonds contains more than ten times the oxalate content of walnuts
My advice therefore is clear: if you'd like to eat nuts stick to two or three walnuts per day
These provide anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids and place significantly less strain on the kidneys
13 Cocoa and chocolate The dark heavy side
For many people chocolate is a slice of life's quality
From a nephrological perspective coa is a concentrated source of oxalates phosphorus and potassium
A particularly dangerous combination for the kidneys
The darker the chocolate the better it may be for the heart but the greater the strain it places on the kidneys
I'll be clear about this: up to 900 milligrams of oxalates can be present in 100 grams of coa powder
Moreover many chocolate products contain lecithin another source of phosphates
However I would also like to present an alternative here
One often overlooked product is carob the powder derived from the carob bean
It is naturally sweet caffeine-free contains almost no oxalates and has one-ninth the phosphorus content of coa
For many of my patients it's the perfect alternative to baking or enjoying a warm drink
No need to worry about worse kidney values the next morning
Rice is considered easily digestible by many people and is often recommended as a gentle diet food
Yet I must point out a darker aspect
Rice absorbs inorganic arsenic from the soil more than almost any other cereal
Arsenic is a neurotoxin and carcinogen that can directly damage the delicate blood vessels in the kidneys
Whole grain rice is particularly problematic
Many believe brown rice is always healthier but with rice the arsenic is actually concentrated in the outer bran layer
also in the portion removed when white rice is processed
That's why I clearly explain to my patients that white rice is often the safer choice for people with kidney disease
since it contains less arsenic and less phosphorus
To further reduce the risk I recommend the so-called noodle method
Cook the rice in six times its volume in water then drain all excess water completely after cooking
This allows for the removal of up to 60% of the arsenic
Alternatively I recommend quinoa or buckwheat both high in fiber and significantly lower in heavy metals
Butter is indispensable in countless kitchens
The real issue however lies in the salt
Salted butter is an often overlooked source
of sodium Sodium acts like a magnet for water
Consuming excessive salt draws water from tissues into the bloodstream increasing blood volume
I'll explain it this way
Imagine your blood vessels as a garden hose
Keep turning the tap wider and the pressure increases
However the filters in the kidneys are extremely fine
This increased hydraulic pressure causes long-term damage to them
My clear recommendation therefore is to use unsalted butter exclusively preferably organic
Thus maintain control over your daily salt intake and protect your kidney filters
Many people enjoy snacking on salt sticks or crackers during a TV evening
These products are primarily made from white flour which causes blood sugar levels to rise quickly
The real issue however is the coarse salt on the surface
Just a small handful of these snacks can contain the entire daily recommended limit of sodium
I always explain to my patients that salt doesn't just cause high blood pressure
but also directly damages the kidneys through inflammatory processes
If you'd like a snack I recommend homemade apple chips or vegetable sticks made from watery vegetables like cumbers
Comfort is one of the biggest enemies of kidney health
Canned foods and ready-made frozen meals are designed to remain shelf-stable for months
This is achieved through large amounts of salt and artificial phosphates
Even a can of supposedly healthy lentil soup can contain more salt than a kidney patient should consume in two days
That's why I give my patients a simple yet effective tip
If using canned beans or canned vegetables discard the liquid and rinse the contents under running water for at least one minute
This allows removal of a large portion of the salt and preservatives
However it's best to cook fresh for example on weekends and freeze individual portions yourself
That way you know exactly what's in your food and give your kidneys lasting relief
Chemical contaminants in processed meats such as sausages ham salami and other cured meat products are a common component of many meals
From a medical standpoint however they are a disaster for the kidneys
They contain nitrates for color preservation large amounts of sodium for preservation and most dangerously phosphates as binders to help the meat retain more water and increase its weight
These phosphates are the same as those found in soft drinks
They are completely absorbed by the body
That's why I clearly warn my patients
Processed meat not only increases the risk of kidney failure but also raises the likelihood of colorectal cancer
It belongs to the most harmful food groups overall
If you'd like to eat meat I recommend only fresh unprocessed meat in small amounts such as turkey or chicken
Beans lentils and peas are considered excellent plant-based sources of protein
Yet they have two sides
On one hand they provide valuable dietary fiber while on the other they contain very high levels of potassium and phosphorus
For individuals with reduced kidney function this can quickly
become a burden so I recommend caution when it comes to portion size
A helpful tip is to soak dried legumes for at least 12 hours changing the water several times
During subsequent cooking the beans release some of their minerals into the water
It's crucial to always discard this cooking water
Legumes can be healthy but only in moderation and when prepared properly
We grew up believing that milk strengthens our bones
However in advanced kidney disease this effect reverses
Milk cheese and yogurt contain very high levels of phosphorus
When the kidneys can no longer excrete phosphorus adequately the level of phosphorus in the blood rises
As I've already explained this is precisely what causes the body to draw calcium from the bones to maintain balance in the bloodstream
That's why I clearly tell my patients that consuming too much milk when kidney function is impaired paradoxically increases the risk of brittle bones
Moreover many dairy products are high in saturated fats which can further impair blood flow to the kidneys
Therefore I recommend plant-based alternatives like rice milk but only after carefully checking the label as added phosphates and E-numbers must be strictly avoided
We've now nearly completed the entire list I realize
that much of this information is difficult to absorb
But before introducing the life-saving natural remedies I'd like to talk about a topic that personally means a great deal to me
Our daily bread—the heart of German cuisine
Here I must clear up a dangerous myth Whole grain and 22
Whole grain bread Why I choose white bread today
In my childhood I learned that dark bread was always the healthier choice
Looking back with today's knowledge about kidney health though I see it entirely differently
Whole grain cereals contain the outer layer the bran
That's precisely where extremely high amounts of phosphorus and potassium are found
One slice of whole grain bread can contain nearly twice as much phosphorus as one slice of white bread
I'd like to explain one more important detail to
you Whole grains contain something known as phytates
They act in the intestines like tiny magnets binding essential minerals such as iron and removing them from the body
Many people already suffer from anemia as they age
Whole grain bread can worsen this condition unnoticed
That's why my advice today is clear
When your kidney values are critical light sourdough bread or plain white bread is actually the gentler option for your kidney filter
My 10 elixirs for a clean kidney
Now that we've covered all the prohibitions we finally reach the part I was personally most looking forward to
Now I'd like to show you how I actively support my kidneys
I have no use for expensive detox regimens from the pharmacy
I trust in nature's pharmacy
Here are the 10 beverages I highly recommend
First on the list are apple juice and apple cider vinegar
I take a tablespoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water every day to prevent small kidney stones from forming in the first place
Then comes cranberry juice
My personal shield against bacteria
And I don’t want to forget about beetroot juice which I really value because it helps widen blood vessels and eases pressure on my kidneys
When I notice my body retaining too much water I reach for lemon lime or celery juice
They function like a natural cleaning crew
Cucumber and parsley juice are like a fresh broom sweeping away debris from the delicate nephrons
My absolute favorite however is pineapple It contains bromelain
an enzyme that literally breaks down inflammation in kidney tissue
On hot days watermelon juice strengthens blood flow to my kidneys thanks to its citrulline
My passionate appeal
Protect your nephrons
I’m now mentally drawing very close to you because I want you to understand one thing clearly
A genuine kidney cleanse isn't a miracle that happens in
three days It's a promise I make to myself every single day
Each of these millions of tiny filters within me my nephrons is an irreplaceable marvel
Once destroyed they never return
That's why I protect my remaining filters not with chemicals but with my daily choices
I avoid these 22 toxins
I drink my natural juices
And I follow the DASH diet to gently manage
my blood pressure It’s a path of mindfulness
A path we walk together
My farewell words
Dear friends your health is in your hands
Just as it lies within me so too does it
