Over two billion Pringles cans are produced and sold worldwide each year
globally driving a value exceeding 3 billion dollars
To meet this massive demand thousands of tons of
potatoes must be harvested and processed every day
Have you ever wondered how Pringles are made and how
all the chips are exactly the same size and shape
Unlike traditional potato chips Pringles are not made from whole slices
from potato but rather from a dough that is carefully prepared and shaped
In today's video we'll visit several factories to uncover how Pringles are made from
from raw material processing to final packaging along with the story and fun facts

The story of Pringles begins in the 1960s when the company Procter & Gamble
decided to hire chemist Frederic Bohr to address several complaints that were
common among consumers of traditional potato
chips which often came overly broken and greasy
The goal was to create a new type of uniformly sized chips that wouldn't break during
a fryer that was cleaner absorbed less
oil during frying and was stackable
In 1965 Frederic Bohr then created the iconic chip format and its cylindrical packaging
The brilliant idea was to stop using sliced and fried potatoes as had always been done before
It can create a potato dough made from a type of
dehydrated potato flake purée and other ingredients
The result was a true and authentic innovation: a thin
crispy flavorful potato slice that stacks perfectly
Its distinctive shape known as a
hyperbolic paraboloid resembles a saddle
In addition to ensuring a perfect fit this curved design
was developed to prevent potatoes from breaking when stacked
However this design would become fragile if
the chips were packaged in conventional plastic containers
So Bohr decided to create a packaging solution that would not only
protect the chips during transport but also keep them fresh for longer
Thus was born the iconic cylindrical Pringles can
Pringles potato chips were introduced only in 1968 and achieved
immediate success People loved their distinctive shape and unique flavor
In no time Pringles became one of the most popular potato chip brands in the world
worldwide sold in over 100 countries and available in more than 100 different flavors
Currently over six million Pringles cans are
produced every day which amounts to 73 cans per second
Approximately 10 million chips are produced daily in factories
But unlike other fried potatoes made from potato slices these are
Pringles are made with about 42% potato flakes
and ingredients such as rice flour and cornstarch
Every step of the process begins in the field with potato
harvesting When the time comes large specialized machines go to work
These massive harvesters capable of harvesting up to 7 tons are equipped w
with discs that loosen the soil while blades cut through
branches and gather potatoes along with soil stones and roots
The potatoes move along vibrating conveyors that act like large
sifters removing soil and small stones without damaging the tubers
As clean potatoes are conveyed into a storage
tank with automated side discharge
When the tank is full the potatoes are transferred to trucks that proceed directly
as the factories that will produce Pringles' potato chips
This production begins with large
batches of fresh potatoes that undergo an impressive transformation
Upon arriving at the factory
the potatoes are unloaded and conveyed by belt systems to the cleaning station
The potatoes are submerged in tanks where a high-pressure
system agitates the water to remove all dirt and debris
After cleaning the potatoes are directed to the peeling area
To remove the skin they are dropped into large
drums with rough surfaces like coarse sandpaper
As the potatoes leap and spin the abrasive texture carefully strips away the skin
preparing the potatoes for the next stage of production
Specialized workers inspect the batches and remove any
potatoes that are spoiled or have significant defects
The approved potatoes are conveyed by conveyor belts to the cutting station
Before being cut the potatoes are quickly plunged
into hot water This hot bath serves a dual purpose
The first step is to soften the potatoes to make them easier to cut
The second is to deactivate enzymes that could affect the product's color and flavor
The potatoes are automatically sliced into high-speed cylinders
Inside the cylinders multiple extremely sharp blades are present
Centrifugal force pushes the potatoes toward the blades which
slice them at high speed into strips and then into cubes
This process is extremely fast with each potato being sliced in under a second
The pieces then move along conveyor belts to the second stage of cooking where the
Potatoes are steamed for 15 minutes at 110 degrees Celsius
The process is halted as soon as the starch reaches complete gelatinization which is
e point at which the potato becomes soft and the starch absorbs water turning into a gel
At this stage the potatoes are mashed until they form a smooth and uniform puree
This process takes place industrial drums equipped with rotating paddles
The purée is then spread in thin layers onto heated rollers where the water is removed
rough controlled evaporation without burning the starch
A partially dried purée passes through a hot air tunnel or rotating cylinders becoming
A thin dry layer that flakes off into brittle fragments
This dry layer is scraped and ground into light
small flakes that will form the base of the Pringles dough
With the flakes ready it's time to add the other ingredients
In a giant mixer dehydrated potato flakes are combined w
water rice flour cornstarch vegetable oil
salt and emulsifiers preservatives and flavorings
Depending on the flavor other ingredients may be mixed into the dough
The resulting mass is similar to coarse damp sand that is firm enoug
To maintain shape but remain pliable enough to be molded
This dough is continuously fed onto a conveyor belt
It is spread out and passed through a series of rolling cylinders that flatten the dough
a thin even layer without holes or air bubbles with a thickness of one millimeter
Then it enters a rotary cutting system which cuts the disks from the dough sheet
The cutters operate like metal stamps rotating in sync with the conveyor belt
The chips are exactly the same size as Pringles with a diameter of approximately 6.5 cm
The leftover dough is reused returned to the start of the line to be mixed and rolled out again
The potato disks are directed into the fryer where they acquire their famous shape
concave which makes stacking possible
This hyperbolic paraboloid shape occurs solely because the dough is fried from above
curved metal forms specifically developed for this purpose
The potatoes spend only 11 seconds submerged in hot vegetable oil at a temperature
above 170 degrees Celsius leaving the chips crispy and golden
After frying the chips exit the conveyor and go through an oil draining session
o reduce fat content and prevent its accumulation in the packaging
The chips then undergo cooling and proceed along a conveyor belt
During this process the powdered seasoning is applied from top
to bottom creating a kind of cascade that evenly coats the chips
This method is designed for all flavors and ensures each chip receives the ideal
amount of seasoning maintaining the brand's consistent and distinctive taste
Thanks to their shape Pringles are perfectly
aligned in rows making them easy to package
At this stage of quality control a trained technician visually
inspects each row checking for broken or defective chips
The horizontally positioned cans travel along these
vibrating conveyors Sensors then sort and weigh each can
The chips are then placed into cylindrical cardboard packages lined with aluminum
Each batch is sampled and weighed to ensure all packages are of uniform weight
The cans are then sealed coded and packed into boxes for shipping
And thus over 2
billion Pringles cans are produced worldwide every year
