Today we're looking at four small but incredibly powerful
words: after all anyway nevertheless and absolutely
With these words you can significantly refine your German and express yourself more clearly
Have fun
Let's at least begin with the word This word can be
used in various situations carrying different meanings
Let's look at an example sentence for the first meaning
She didn’t get the job but at least she was invited to the interview
We’re facing a negative reality—she didn’t get the job
But there’s also something positive
—her attitude during the interview
And I emphasize that quite firmly
Her goal was not achieved She did not get the job
Yet despite the rejection there is something positive
At the very least this also expresses a certain recognition
I emphasize that being invited to the interview is no easy feat
Impressive that she managed to do it
One more example
I'm sad because I didn't win the tournament
At least you made it to the final
So you didn't win but you did reach the final
That's an excellent achievement You have every reason to be proud of it
What grade did you get on the math test
Just a 4 Well at least I passed
I'm not satisfied with my performance a 4 isn't a
good grade But I passed and that's what matters most
In casual speech "simply" is sometimes used on its own as a brief response or reaction
Just like this—I got a 4 on my math test
Still at least that With
this brief reply I emphasize that passing the exam is a commendable achievement even if the grade isn't outstanding
I comfort the person and say don't be sad—be happy that you've passed
It's often accompanied by a number for instance here
The concert wasn't a success was it
I do think so After all there were 50 people there
So I think the concert was indeed a success since there were 50 people there
And while that's not a large crowd it's still a success
Or the train ticket to Hamburg costs 20 euros
That's quite convenient considering the journey takes five hours
The price is reasonable especially considering the journey takes five hours
Still it's used here to emphasize that a certain amount is positive or surprisingly good given the circumstances
At the very least we can still use it in another sense namely as a synonym for finally
Here's an example Why won't you help him After all he's your brother
At the very least it serves an explanatory or reminder function here
I'm asking why don't you help him Do I need to remind you that he's your brother and that you should therefore help him
Or Herr Müller won't get promoted Why not He's been
with the company for five years already and performs well
Mr Müller deserves a promotion He's been with the company for five years—that's a long time
Or don't speak so poorly of your boss—she's at least helped you advance in your career
At the very least this statement acknowledges the positive role the woman played in the other person's career
Despite other problems or conflicts she should not forget this
Next up is the word ohnehin Here's an example
We can easily meet tomorrow—I'll be in town anyway
Anyway "sowieso" means "anyway" — it doesn't matter whether we meet or not I'll be in town regardless
In any case it emphasizes that something would have happened anyway regardless of other circumstances
One more example
I'm sorry I didn't ask you if you wanted to go to the movies with us
No problem I wasn't really in the mood for the movie anyway
Also it doesn't matter that you didn't ask me I wasn't interested in the movie to begin with
It wouldn't have made any difference even if you had asked me
This already conveys insignificance in itself
It doesn't matter that you didn't ask me because I didn't actually want to see the movie
Or it's no problem that the food isn't ready yet—I'm not hungry anyway
Also even if the food were ready it wouldn't change the fact that I'm not hungry
And that's why it doesn't matter that the meal isn't ready yet
We don’t have space for a bookshelf in our living room
It doesn’t matter—I’m reading only e-books anyway
Even if we had a bookshelf I wouldn't need it since I only read e-books
As mentioned it's essentially synonymous with "sowieso " However it's
used less frequently and belongs more to formal or elevated language
In informal usage there's another synonym namely E
I only read E-books anymore

The word FURTHER in FURTHERHIN already hints at what this word is about
Something continues something will also be carried on into the future
Will you continue working for this company after giving birth to your child
Simply put will you still be working for this company in the future when your child arrives
Alternatively our restaurant is being renovated but it will remain open
Also the restaurant is currently open as usual and this will continue in the future despite the renovations
Or Great to hear things are going so well for you professionally Wishing you continued success
The key point here is always about maintaining a continuous state In
these sentences we could simply say "further" instead of "furthermore "
In everyday speech one hears it only very rarely anymore
Moreover the meaning may still persist
It indicates that a condition beginning in the past continues up to the present
UNTIL NOW
So we're not saying anything about the future
For instance is your computer working again
No I'm still having the issue where I can't
connect to the internet I still have this problem
I've had it in the past and I still have it right now—always
Or It's still unclear whether my mother is coming for a visit next week
I've already been unsure for some time now whether my mother is
coming next week or not and that uncertainty still stands
There's a subtle difference between WEITERHIN and
IMMERNOCH IMMERNOCH carries a slightly more emotional tone
When I say we're still waiting for the test results I'm expressing dissatisfaction
Why do we have to wait so long
But if I say we're continuing to wait for the test results that's more neutral
I'm simply saying that in the past we waited and even now we're still waiting
Moreover the term can also mean additionally
Thus we can use this word to add extra information
In this sense however it is not used quite as frequently
This also belongs to a somewhat more elevated style of language
For instance the applicant has extensive experience international
politics Furthermore she speaks four languages fluently
As mentioned that sounds a bit elevated
Typically one would say IN ADDITION she speaks four languages or FURTHERMORE
One more example
This city boasts a beautiful old town
In addition it is renowned for its welcoming residents
Another synonym for WEITERHIN is ZUDEM
We could also say that in addition to or beyond that she is known for her welcoming residents
Now let's take a look at a truly interesting word: SCHLECHTHIN
When you see this word for the first time you can't guess what it means
After explaining the meaning to you shortly we'll also explore how that meaning came about Here
is a sample sentence to start with
Lionel Messi is the football superstar period
That means Lionel Messi is the best or most famous example of a football superstar
When I think of football stars Lionel Messi is the first one that comes to mind
You could even say he's the perfect football star
Here's another example
Bell peppers are truly a vitamin C powerhouse
We describe a food item as a vitamin C bomb if it contains a very high amount of vitamin C
And here it states that bell peppers are the best example of a vitamin C bomb
Paprika is a food rich in vitamin C
SCHLECHTHIN always follows a noun in this function
Here is an alternative phrasing
Tetris Apple dedicates a film to
the creation of the iconic game
So Apple is producing a movie about the game Tetris
And Tetris is the best example of a cult game It
is the perfect cult game
A game that everyone knows
Where does the word SCHLECHTHIN come from
As we've seen it has nothing at all to do with SCHLECHTHIN
Calling Lionel Messi the football star in a somewhat
negative way is actually somewhat positive not truly negative
The adjective SCHLECHT has a very interesting history
In earlier stages of the German language such as during the Middle Ages
The word SCHLECHT meant smooth or simple—nothing
more nothing less It was a completely neutral term
However over time this meaning has changed
Bad came to mean simply the opposite of valuable
or precious growing increasingly negative over time
And eventually this evolved into our modern word for BAD
Meaning the opposite of good
There are still a few words that retain the original neutral meaning of SCHLECHT or bad today
And SCHLECHTHIN is one of them
Lionel Messi is unquestionably the football star SCHLECHTHIN
He is simply and clearly without a doubt an absolute football superstar
