What's up everyone and welcome to art and design. My name is Thorgir and today we're going to be
making some art on the iPad. Let's check it out. So what I had planned for today's video was to
take you with me on a hiking trip in Iceland. The idea was to take some pictures of some nice
looking textures, some beautiful landscape and kind of use that in order to create an original
artwork. There was one problem with that idea and that is there's a massive storm
raging in Iceland right now. So I'm not going outside, especially not with a camera. So instead
what we're going to do is we're going to chill out inside and have a nice time and make something
awesome on the iPad. All right so we have Procreate in front of us and we're going to start
by creating a canvas by clicking on the plus icon over here. Now we're going to select a golden
ratio big canvas and I'm going to show you what that looks like. It's basically a canvas that I
made for printing. It has a dpi of 150, a height of 49.5 approximately and a width of 80 centimeters.
Now you can increase the dpi to 300 if you're going to do really high resolution prints. I'm
going to select that. There we go. So we're going to start by decreasing the brightness of the
background to something that is less eye-straining. It can be very uncomfortable to look at a white
canvas for a prolonged period of time. So we're going to select a color for the brush and I'm
thinking something on the lines of orange. Maybe not so bright like this one. Yeah. For the brush
itself let's check that out. I'm thinking, I'm thinking nickel roll would do nicely here. So
quick tip, tap with four fingers removes the interface. Pretty handy if you want to focus on
the drawing. Now sometimes it can be very beneficial to know exactly what you're going to be drawing
but sometimes it's actually more fun just to go at it to see what comes out and that's what I'm
essentially doing here. I'm just putting something down on paper and then, oh not paper, putting
something down on the iPad and kind of see where the process is taking me. Now I have sort of an
idea of what I want to create. It's something to do with the transition between a sky and a lake
and something happening in the middle. I haven't figured out that point yet. Now this is, I'm
quite happy with this shape right here. What I'm going to do is I'm going to mirror this shape by
dragging it to the left here, pressing duplicate and then I'm going to press the mirror horizontal
turn on magnetic so that it is in line and then I'm going to drop it over here
and then we'll see. Yeah, it matches together. Okay, we can work with this. So next thing I'm
thinking about doing is doing the sea and then the sky. Okay, let's just start by merging these
two together and creating a new layer, putting this underneath this layer. So we're going to be
working on the sea and we're going to have it underneath this layer. Let's pick a nice bluish
color. That looks pretty good. Okay, so now I'm just going to go ahead and fill in the bottom section
of this painting right here. All right, something like this. I'm going to give it a slightly brighter
hue. Now we're going to create a new layer and we're going to position that above the sea layer
but still underneath that orange layer. And now for a sky texture, maybe bright orange.
We can always change things afterwards because we are working with layers after all.
All right, so what should we do next? What we could do is we could select the brush and we could
simply start drawing in the sunset and put in all the little details that go into making a painting
look really good. That's going to take a while. I'm not going to do this for this video. So we have the
iPad, we have the pencil, we've taken some pictures which we have in the cloud and I have downloaded
a few pictures in high quality and I'm just going to select a sunset and voila! We got a sunset in
the image. Now what we could start by doing is start by removing all of the parts of the image
that we don't need. No, we're not going to be doing this. It's going to take way too long. We don't have
time for that. So instead what we're going to do is we're going to do a clever trick. So start by
resizing the canvas, positioning the sky so that it looks right in the composition.
Something like this. I'm gonna just make it so that it goes to the edges and is aligned properly.
Yes, I'm pretty happy with that. So now what we're going to do is we're going to select
the sky layer and essentially what we're doing is we're selecting the outlines of the content of
that layer and then we move to another layer and clear it. Except if we do it right now we're just
going to clear the sky portion of that image so we need to inverse the selection by tapping on
this icon right here. So now we've inverted the selection and now we can press clear.
And there we go. Pretty cool. So that's a pretty handy trick to have in your tool belt. So the next
thing we're going to do is we're going to do the same for the lake and we're going to select an
image by clicking insert photo and I'm thinking about using this, where was it, this one over
here. And the sparkly, I think it's the bonnet of my car actually. It was kind of sparkling
that morning. I'm just going to position that like so. Make sure that the edges line up.
All right. And then we do the same. We select the contents of the layer that we painted earlier
and then we press inverse selection. Make sure that we have the above layer selected and press
clear. And there we go. We've got the selection cleared out. The next thing we're going to do
is we're going to work on the hue saturation and brightness of this layer, the horizon,
the yellow stuff essentially. Just going to bring down the hue just a tad, decrease the saturation
a bit and a little less brightness. And essentially what I'm trying to do here is just to get the
colors to harmonize together. I don't want the entire image to be orange. I don't want the entire
image to be blue, you know, just trying to get the colors to kind of pop out. And so I'm just
going to speed through this process and you'll see it in fast forward. All right. So now that
we've got the colors to a point where I'm happy with them, we're going to start working on the
center of the image where the event is going to take place. And for that we're going to select
the awesome ink, which is pretty awesome ink. It's an awesome brush that we downloaded. I'll link it
in the description if you want to use it yourself. So let me show you what it looks like. Right,
I still got the sky layer selected. So deselect that and as you can see the brush changes based
on the orientation of the movement. So it's pretty awesome and creates some cool looking
textures. So I'm just going to drag a few lines from the edges towards the middle of the screen
where the action or the event is going to take place and we'll see what happens from there.
All right, so I'm going to end this part of the video right here. In the next part I'll be working
on the center of the image and show you what it will eventually end up looking like after I spend
some more time on it. Please be sure to like this video and subscribe to my channel if you want to
see more content like this. I want to thank you very much for watching and I'll see you in the
next one.
