Today I’m telling you the Siggikitt story about the little frog and his big fear of water
Near a beautiful clear mountain lake lives a little froglet
He is green has big lively eyes and is named Fränzchen
Fränzchen loves hopping through the grass enjoys singing silly frog songs and is actually just an ordinary young frog
If only he weren't afraid of water
I'm not daring to go in says Fränzchen standing at the edge of the lake
The water looks so foreign so unfamiliar so uncertain to him
Come on Fränzchen you can do it his frog mother calls out to him sitting on a lily pad in the pond
Fränzchen would love to be on a lily pad too but he doesn't dare
No no he shakes his head then I'll just collapse after all
But you can swim Fränzchen you're a frog
Swimming comes quite easily her frog mother says
But Fränzchen doesn't believe he can swim He stays put on the
shore nervously staring at the water and says it once more
No no I wouldn't dare go in there A duck flew
by and landed right in the middle of the lake
Ripples immediately form stirring the surface of the water
This frightens Fränzchen even more
Everything's wobbling everything's swaying he cries looks
far too unstable And as he sees a small wave approaching him
He leapt dramatically and vanished into the bushes in the blink of an eye
No no he doesn't want to be in such a shaky boat
The next morning Fränzchen is back at the
lakeside Today his frog father is with him
Come on Fränzchen I'll show you how to step into the water he encourages
No no answers Fränzchen into the water I'm not going in there
You'll see it's perfectly easy
And then Father Frog shows him how it's done
With a mighty leap he jumps into the lake straight into the deep water and vanishes
Fränzchen no longer sees him but he does see a few bubbles rising
Shortly afterward his father emerges laughing from the water
So now it's your turn waving to his son
Fränzchen looks at the deep water and shakes his head
No no I'm not going in the deep water Come
into the shallow water suggests Papa Frog
Fränzchen also gazes at the shallow water
Yet it looks so strange so unfamiliar
What could possibly be waiting for him there Fränzchen doesn’t even want to try it
No no he says crossing his arms I
just want to be here by the shore
By the lake Fränzchen feels
safe Here he isn't afraid
at all he can play and search for pretty pebbles
He can hop over stones or balance on a fallen log
He can bake small sandcakes and build sandcastles in the sand
Here by the shore he feels at ease
Fränzchen sighs Papa
Frog You're already a big
frog son It's really time you learned to swim
You can't stay on the shore forever
But Fränzchen sees it entirely differently
When he thinks of the water he doesn't feel big at all
There he feels small anxious and shy
And so he says it again
No no into the water—I'm not going in there
The next day Fränzchen's aunt takes the frog boy to the lake
Come on Fränzchen she says offering him
her hand Let's swim in the lake
I can't swim replies Fränzchen
When you were little Aunt Frog says you
swam everywhere You were still a tadpole then
You never had any fear of water
You may have forgotten that
But if you step into the water you'll remember it again
You'll soon discover how beautiful it is in the water
But Fränzchen simply can't believe you
He looks at his green arms and his green frog legs
I wasn't a tadpole at all he insists
No no I'm not going in the water
She sighs her aunt
She can't persuade the little frog boy to jump into the water either
And while Fränzchen finally plays in the sand by the
lake's shore the adults chat beneath the shade of a tree
What on earth are we going to do the frog mother worries
Fränzchen must learn to swim—he is a frog after all
And he's old enough Papa Frog adds All the
other froglets have been swimming for ages
Yet none of the adults knows how to
help Franzchen overcome his fear of water
Yes adults simply couldn't know that
Because some things only children can understand
And what I mean by that you'll hear shortly
On a particularly hot day in June Fränzchen hears loud noises coming from the lake
He hears laughter and giggling squeaking and shouting splashing and splattering
It sounds like incredible fun
Curious Fränzchen hops eagerly to the lake and watches intently to see what might be happening
A group of frog children are splashing around in
the water There must be about twenty little frogs
They play in the water bathe dive swim laugh with joy cheer and have great fun
They somersault and tumble into the water leaping from lily pad to lily pad
Splashing each other racing through the water and exploring the lake's bottom by diving
Fränzchen keeps hearing cheerful giggles and lively laughter
The other children are having so much fun sighs Fränzchen feeling just a touch envious
One of the frog children sees the frog boy standing on the shore
Hey you it calls out to him want to come into the water with me
But Fränzchen shakes his head No no he
says into the water I wouldn't dare go in
And the frog children keep playing A few frogs have
discovered they can bounce on the lily pads like trampolines
They're having such fun
Other frog children lie on their backs on the water making it look as though they're floating on the surface
They bask in the sun on their bellies smiling happily and contentedly
There another little frog sees the young frog standing on the shore
Hey you it calls out are you coming too It's really a lot of fun
Fränzchen sadly shakes her head
No no not into the water—I'm still not brave enough to go in
But actually Fränzchen would really love to be playing in the water with the other children
He would also love to have that much fun and joy
But he still hasn't found the courage
Oh what's this A group of froglets have found a large piece of
bark On it they've attached a small stick like the mast of a boat
Let's play pirates they exclaim excitedly
And this is our boat
Now it gets exciting A large sheet is turned into a sail
The pirate frogs take their places on the boat
The adventure can begin
Land in sight they call out
now That must be a treasure island—drop the anchor
And a real treasure hunt
Now Fränzchen can do nothing else He simply
can't stand by the shore and watch any longer
He has to get in the water to be part of this pirate adventure
First he cautiously steps one foot into the water
Fränzchen notices that the water is pleasantly cool refreshing and invigorating
It's not so bad after all Fränzchen happily notes
Then carefully slips his second foot into the water
He waits briefly but nothing bad still happens
On the contrary it feels really good standing here in the water
Then Fränzchen sticks his hand into the water
Actually he says it's quite nice here And there
as he cautiously dips his hand into the water
He gets splashed wet by one of the frog children
A whole splash of water lands on his back
But it feels pleasant refreshing and really good on a hot day
Hey you Fränzchen calls out loudly
The froglet that splashed him winks at him cheekily
Fränzchen grins back even more impudently
And then he leaps and hops into the deep water
I can swim Fränzchen shouts aloud
And as he realizes the water is carrying him while he moves his arms and legs
Of course you can swim the other frog children
laugh What did you think You're a frog after all
Astonished Fränzchen swims and dives through the water
feeling not at all foreign but strangely familiar
He recalls what his aunt told him
"When you were still a little tadpole you swam everywhere " she had said
And Fränzchen realizes it's true The water doesn't feel eerie at all but familiar and
comforting And wonderfully nice
And suddenly someone calls out
Pirates ahoi
Fränzchen sticks his head out of the water
Ahead of him sails the pirate ship built by the frog children
I want to play too calls Fränzchen
Then come aboard the pirates called to him That’s Fränzchen
’s doing And then he’s no longer
just the frog boy Fränzchen
but he is the adventurous pirate captain Franz Froschbart who
with his crew is currently searching for the buried Goldstadt
A great adventure awaits him It's so thrilling that
Fränzchen doesn't even notice time slipping away
And when late in the afternoon the frog children
all go home Fränzchen hops joyfully to his parents
Mama Papa he says I was
in the lake today in the
water I dared to go down all the way down deep
His frog parents are delighted
they shout to him congratulations
And I found a treasure Fränzchen said There
were sharks in the water and seagulls in the sky
And there was a fierce storm
Our boat nearly sank
But we managed to reach the treasure island just in time
And there on the island dangerous crocodiles prowled
There was also a volcano and a limestone cave
Fränzchen tells it excited and utterly thrilled
And as he speaks Frog Mom and Frog Dad exchange stunned looks
What Sharks and crocodiles and volcanoes they ask
Here in our mountain lake
And that’s when Fränzchen starts to laugh
Yes and that’s precisely why there are certain things only
children can do not adults—because
children have so much imagination
And imagination—surely you've got
plenty of that too Right
