How often do you actually eat buckwheat
I'd guess not very often
Buckwheat a humble pseudocereal isn't exactly a staple food for most people
Today I'll show you why that's a mistake
In Ayurveda buckwheat has held a prominent place for thousands of years
and longevity research is also intrigued by its bioactive compounds
Let's take a look at everything buckwheat has to offer
Among all the exotic foods that have secured a place in our supermarkets in recent years
We sometimes overlook our own local superfoods
Buckwheat is definitely at the top of my list
Unlike what the name might suggest he is related to rhubarb not wheat
It is a type of knotweed plant and falls under the category of pseudocereals
In Europe it was long regarded as the grain of the poor
You may be familiar with the German term Heidekorn Buckwheat
is highly resilient and thrives even in poor barren regions
The kernels which resemble tiny pyramids have a nutty flavor
and can be consumed whole ground into flour or cracked for use Buckwheat
is naturally gluten-free making it popular among people who avoid gluten
ose who suffer from celiac disease or have gluten intolerance
The grains are rich in dietary fiber valuable protein low in fat and packed with essential micronutrients
Among them for example B vitamins and essential minerals such as magnesium potassium and iron
That brings us to the four most important benefits of
buckwheat First buckwheat is a complete protein source
Maybe they're among those trying to consume more protein
In that case buckwheat is an excellent choice
The small seeds contain about 10% protein and provide all essential amino acids
Unlike traditional cereal crops buckwheat also contains relatively high levels of lysine
This is the amino acid that tends to be slightly lacking in a plant-based diet
Lysine is important for collagen production the immune system and muscles
Secondly buckwheat is one of the best natural sources of lysine
Rutin is a secondary plant compound and a polyphenol more specifically a flavonoid
Higher flavonoid intake is generally associated with a lower risk of overall mortality and chronic diseases
Routine shows various fascinating effects in studies and is highly intriguing for longevity research
A 2022 study showed that sodium restriction extended the lifespan of mice by approximately 10%
This may be due to improved liver function and a more favorable fat metabolism
Moreover routine acts as a strong antioxidant neutralizing free radicals and is considered highly beneficial for skin and vascular health
and what is known as a xenomorphikum
This means it can reduce the secretion of certain substances from aged cells that damage surrounding tissue
This process is considered a key driver of aging
Third buckwheat helps maintain stable blood sugar levels
Buckwheat has a low glycemic index and can help prevent blood sugar from spiking too high and then dropping sharply
This is relevant for diabetics and anyone who could greatly benefit from avoiding a significant energy crash after eating
Canadian researchers demonstrated in 2003 that a buckwheat concentrate could reduce blood sugar levels in diabetic rats by 12 to 19 percent
This is likely due to another rare compound Buckwheat
is one of the best-known sources of D-chiro-inositol
This vitaminoid appears to enhance cellular insulin sensitivity
Inositol is often recommended for example in cases of polycystic ovary syndrome
Now let's move on to the fourth point
Amaranth protects the heart and blood vessels
Some scientific studies have found that buckwheat helps lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels in the blood
The flavonoid routine also plays a role here strengthening
capillary walls and potentially improving circulation
In Europe routine preparations are frequently used for chronic venous insufficiency
What I as an Ayurvedic doctor naturally find interesting is that in Ayurveda buckwheat is considered warming and drying
It is especially recommended for individuals with a Kapha constitution or Kapha imbalance
Also for everyone prone to water retention excess weight and metabolic issues
This aligns very well with the proven blood sugar-stabilizing and vascular-protective properties
My tips for eating more buckwheat
Try buckwheat as a nutty side dish instead of rice or quinoa
Replace some of the wheat flour with buckwheat flour when baking
It tastes especially delicious in pancakes or a savory quiche
If you're interested in my favorite recipes check out the link in the description
There you'll find the PDF for a cookbook of my favorite recipes
Soba noodles are a quick option but check the ingredient list
Many products contain only a small amount of buckwheat
Soba tea is a Japanese infusion made from roasted buckwheat seeds
It has a nutty slightly sweet flavor contains no caffeine provides numerous essential nutrients and is traditionally regarded as appetite-suppressing
Sprout your own buckwheat greens and enjoy them as a topping on your cereal or salad
The nutrient density is especially high in the sprouts
As a final tip please make sure to buy whole grain buckwheat preferably sourced locally
The germ and the outer layers have the highest concentration of nutrients
I hope you enjoyed the buckwheat
Warmest regards Ulrich Bauerhofer
