Good evening ladies and gentlemen I warmly welcome you to our evening show tonight
And today joining us is our guest Fatma from Syria We're delighted you're here with us Fatma please tell us a little about yourself
My name is Fatma I'm from Syria I currently live in Hamburg but I was born in Damascus I speak Arabic and German
Welcome Fatma And today's question is: What is Ramadan fasting
Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar during which the Quran was revealed
Muslims fast for 30 days from the first light of dawn until sunset abstaining from food drink smoking and sexual activity
Fasting also has an inner dimension: devout Muslims are expected to refrain even more than usual from sin meaning they should avoid speaking listening to or engaging in anything bad
So Fatma Do all Muslims have to fast
No Some people are exempt from fasting
Children under 14 travelers pregnant women nursing mothers and those menstruating are exempt from fasting and make up the fasts later
Elderly and ill individuals who take medication should not fast but they should consume a daily portion of dates
And why do Muslims fast I mean what is the purpose of fasting
The purpose of fasting is to cultivate compassion and when one has nothing to eat it strengthens the goodness within oneself
Very good And as far as I know fasting during Ramadan is one of the pillars of Islam isn't it
Yes absolutely Fasting is the fourth pillar of Islam
Islam is founded upon five pillars that form the framework of a Muslim's life
And they celebrate Eid after Ramadan right
Yes when Ramadan ends Muslims celebrate the Festival of Breaking the Fast
And Muslims must distribute Zakat before the festival of breaking the fast
Zakat What on earth is that
This is the third pillar of Islam known as giving Zakat or supporting the needy
Every Muslim is obligated to give 2.5 percent of their annual savings to the poor and needy
And to whom should they give Zakat
I first look to help the poor in my family then among my relatives then my neighbors then people on my street then in my village—meaning the closer the better
So Fatma those were very interesting insights Thank you so much for joining us and we wish you a blessed Ramadan
You're very welcome
