The largest personal Instagram page in the world belongs to soccer legend Cristiano Ronaldo.
Well, he just released two posts to his 668 million followers featuring President
Donald Trump, and it's creating quite a stir online. Here's one of them.
I'm joined now by CBN's Trey Gowens-Phillips. Trey, what did you think about the posts?
You know, I think that we're in a unique place right now as a country, as a world. I think,
you know, Cristiano Ronaldo praising Trump is kind of a unique flashpoint, Raj, but I think it's one
that's becoming increasingly more common because we're seeing the political map, the conventional
political map as we know it, being completely redrawn. And so I think we're seeing unlikely
alliances forming even among kind of apolitical people, which I think Cristiano generally falls
into that camp. So, yeah, I think it's an interesting time politically because the
conservative movement and the progressive movement are not what they always were. I think
we're seeing all of that turned on its head and mixed up in new ways.
You know, and for the American audience, I know there's some folks, believe it or not,
that are watching this in the States here that are like, who? I know that's hard for you to
believe around the world, but yes, there are a lot of Americans who don't actually know who this is.
For an American audience, he's like the LeBron James, I guess, the Patrick Mahomes of soccer,
of football, as they call it basically everywhere else. But this is a big deal,
actually. I mean, the comments in this post, the comments are getting like 20,000 likes,
the comments. And there are obviously folks who are not thrilled about this, but I would push back
from a biblical perspective with 1 Timothy. You know, Trey, we always like to give some biblical
backing. Literally two verses. 1 Timothy chapter 2, I urge then, first of all, that petitions,
prayers, intercession, and thanksgiving be made for all people, for kings and all those in
authority that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness. And so,
I think biblically, no matter what you think of the president, we should be praying for him.
And the idea that we shouldn't talk to folks and try to change people's minds and try to interact
is just unhelpful. It's siloing, it's echo chambering. And I think the fact that Ronaldo
is putting his personal brand on the line to have conversations with those who are in power,
I don't see anything wrong with that, no matter what you think of the president.
This is not a political statement, a political conversation per se. I think this is just a,
hey, we should be talking as people. Obviously, we can have very strong disagreements, even
culturally, right? This came because the president of the United States had a very, very profound
meeting with the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammed bin Salman. And obviously, the United
States and Saudi Arabia have huge differences, but should they not at least be having conversations?
So, I think the idea of, hey, I don't like the president, don't talk to him, Ronaldo,
I think that's a little childish. And so, to me, as you were saying,
Trey, I think this meeting was a good thing. Yeah. And I think specifically to Trump and the
fact that he is willing to have conversations with controversial leaders, with foreign countries and
regimes that we have, of course, obviously not always had good relations with. I think
Ronaldo is picking up on something that even somebody like Bill Maher, who's obviously,
of course, not a fan at all of President Trump, has picked up on, which is that Trump is easy to
talk to. He actually seems to listen to the interests of the people in front of him. I think
it was in another interview that Ronaldo did, he talked about that. He's like, Trump is kind of
down to earth and he's an easy guy to talk to. So, I think Ronaldo sees Trump kind of like Bill
Maher does, for better or worse, as a transformative president. And Trump is obviously a powerful
figure. He's the leader of the free world and he's willing to do unconventional things as he's
doing by sitting down with the Saudi crown prince. So, yeah, I think there's that element playing in.
But ultimately, as believers, like you said, Raj, I think most importantly, we should be
willing to come to the table. Whether you voted for the guy or you dislike the guy,
he's still your president. He's the president of the United States. And as Christians,
we ought to be praying for those in power over us, that they would be sensitive to the moving
of the Holy Spirit, that they would seek wisdom from those around them, and ultimately, that they
would come to Christ and seek wisdom from wisdom himself, who is God. Amen, amen, and amen. Well,
Trey, I appreciate your time, my brother. Happy to be here.
